Ins & Outs + Squad Updates and Transfer links on 21:06 - Sep 2 by jasper_T | I can't imagine fans of any club would tell you their squad still looks strong after selling three of their highest-profile players. |
That's why I asked about reinvesting. I actually don't think we look that strong. Losing VDH was a massive blow for me, strong and experienced and now replaced with a loan player who looks good admittedly but, well, he isn't ours. I don't object to Grimes leaving because I don't think he's strong enough in our midfield. That why we signed that Bristol fella, we needed more fight in the middle. We also needed someone a bit more brave I think, too often we went sideways and backwards when a better (or at least equal) forward option was there, most frustrating.

If you think Smith offers more fight than the guy with the most tackles in the division last season you're in for a disappointment. Even before his injuries Smith was making far less challenges per game with a lower success rate than Grimes boasts, and it's not even a knock on the new guy as Grimes is objectively impressive at this level defensively. Shame many Swans fans won't see it.

The stats don't always tell the full story though. Bebe had good stats before joing the red mancs didn't he? As it goes I don't hate Grimes, if I had the choice it'd be Byers I'd sell, will someone give us 10 million for him?

Grimes has a massive positive influence on the way in which we play. He/we would benefit from a dominant, commanding presence alongside. He would have slotted in seamlessly in our Pratley, Leon, Bodde era. Apparently he's a top bloke as well, and his transformation since his unsuccessful loan stints is testimony to his grit, hard work and determination - just like how he plays.
Ins & Outs + Squad Updates and Transfer links on 17:06 - Sep 3 with 1904 views | KarlHRummenigge | McKay and John given the boot. Pity about John, added some zip when given his chance. McKay hasn't even done his perennial flattery to deceive. Shame, as a natural talent, but little effort and poor body language. QPR was the last straw. The Forest fans did warn us.
Ins & Outs + Squad Updates and Transfer links on 18:06 - Sep 3 with 1883 views | Catullus | Maybe I am hard on Grimes, mental note to stop comparing players with Leon! Now Declan John,I never wanted him, never rated him and I'm glad to see the back of him. MacKay, yes we were warned. It's waste of a career that many of us would have crawled over red hot coals to have a chance at! I just hope we dont' seel Cabango and/or Rodon. With those 2 and Guehi we have a solid back 3, good height and strength, assuming we're carrying on where we left off? We still need a striker and another CB though.

I don't think Bebe did have good stats, no. A 4 in 26 striker in the third tier in Portugal before jumping around clubs. He goes down as one of the most famously dodgy, obviously agent-driven transfers of all time, surely.

Grimes actually makes more tackles than Leon did. Players don't simply get compared to Leon but the exaggerated myth of Leon, who'd have the crowd singing his name every time he gave away a free kick. Difficult to live up to a cult hero.
Ins & Outs + Squad Updates and Transfer links on 18:32 - Sep 3 with 1860 views | Joe_bradshaw | I don’t think Leo’s strength was tackling, it was his anticipation of the second ball which he was outstanding at. Grimes is a good tackler and equally good at not having to make a tackle but making the opposition turn back and not playing the ball they wanted to.

You're right, Leon's tackles ended up being fouls, as he mistimed his anticipatory interceptions and got frustrated. Grimes is a tenacious tackler, often with impeccable timing - until it's not, and he fouls. Both outstanding CMs, with exceptional "Football-IQ".

Scott's influence is not really coming to the fore. All the recent signings have Coopers stamp on them. Smith and Lowe are in the same league well known the the coaching staff. Woodman Guehi and Gibbs White are 'Cooperite'. The young Chelsea teenger probably Scott. Why have a high powered scouting team for loan players?

Maybe so but Leon read the game far better than Grimes ever could. His positional sense would snuff out most attacks plus he gave us tempo. I haven’t seen tempo in our play since he retired.

Yes makes you wonder what the issue is. Is he presenting players that Cooper doesn't want? Not presenting options at all or presenting players we cannot afford or realistically get?

That’s exactly what Leon was good at, anticipation, took the ball in all areas and made our centre halves at the time look a lot better than they were in possession, he was always an option. It’s not fair comparing Grimes to Leon, we’ll miss him though. We needed energy next to him but it has never happened for the likes of Byers etc. Grimes is a good player at this level as he has proven with us.

Tough on Grimes to compare him to Leon in his heyday. Both highly football-IQ Agree re tempo, been lacking that zip. Hope he stays and works on his zip to continue his commendable development. He has the ability to get us playing the way we like.

Leon had the advantage of being able to use both feet which gave him much better scope for distribution. Grimes is an easy read because of his over reliance on his left peg. Question - if we sold Grimes and Woods was available from Stoke for 4 million would you take him??
