It's clear to everyone our attacking has left a lot to be desired. This has been the case for quite some time and it needs a lot of improving and an obvious change of mindset.
But, whilst we have disappointed in terms of seeing any fluidity or style of attack just yet, it's also important to note, apart from Man United, we've been right in every game until the death.
Fans can stamp their feet like spoilt kids and moan about a dim and distant past as if it was always so bloody glorious - laughable. But we've competed well, not spectacularly, but competed.
Watford have a good, athletic and footballing side, they are 6th and maybe the surprise side this season with a great manager. We could so easily have taken all 3 points off them and probably deserved to the way we fought our way back into the game.
Newcastle and Soton are more than holding their own and whilst both very beatable, by us, and others have made solid starts and make life tricky. Soton deserved to beat us, but they couldn't. We deserved to beat Newcastle, but lost.
Our points have come from Spurs and Palace and people have been too quick to knock both of these games from our perspective. Spurs was a back to the wall performance against arguably the best XI in the league. No matter how much our style changes we still won't be able to "turn it on" against the likes of these. Palace was never in doubt and comfortable from where I was sitting, yeah, we sat back but they never really looked like getting something. We were also in the middle of the window and this has clearly had a lasting impact and is still lingering now.
We've also gone away to West Ham and pretty much bossed the game. Yeah, we got done by a last minute sucker punch and for the second time in a week but again, the margins are so close.
The reasons given for a lack of cohesion just yet aren't excuses. We were late in the window and we didn't get all our targets. A Chadli coming in could well have made the difference in all these close encounters.
But we were right not to cross the greasy palm of Pullis with their ridiculous asking price.
Our squad does need time to settle. Bony needs a few more games but is already looking like the missing piece in the jigsaw. Sanches has improved with every outing (all bloody 3 of them)
Mesa hasn't even been given a chance....
We are not far away but don't let that get in the way of your constant bitchfest and sniping.

Thanks pencoedjack!
Tom "David Silva" Carroll needs to stop hiding behind some of the performances of last season. He was superb in some games back then, but has been far from impressive so far. I'd like to see how many kms he covers now, compared to last season. Not because the total number of kms makes him a better player but last season he seemed to offer the overlap a lot more and got some incredible crosses in. He doesn't seem to want to offer that run now, but that could be down to orders from PC
One unlikely saviour COULD be Ki if he plays and succeeds in a more advanced role. It's a bit unlikely, but it's possible.
I'm a fan of Ki ....yes he's not a playing you'd want in the trenches with you but a far better footballer than most of our current crop.
I believe Clement also rates him

The part where you wrote: "many of our fans went metal and expected us to be in the CL places". I don't think anyone expected anything above top 10 as the best case scenario. I can't remember anyone saying CL even once. Even the most deluded/optimistic thought top 8 at best, I think.
You don't think anyone expected above top 10?
Nick please don't take this the wrong but you're out of touch Mate.

Ok.....top 10....fine......but I didn't read anything on here or other forums saying we'd finish above ManC, ManU, Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool, Arsenal or Everton.
All I was saying is your point about most expecting a Champions League finish was an exaggeration.

Well perhaps not CL places but not far off.

so you've run through our games and just endorsed the fact we've been competitive in them all.
We're not miles away clearly as we could quite easily be on at least another 6 points and a start similar to Watford.
Plus I've not read a single report claiming those things about Bony. Prove it with a link or two and if so we'll judge the merits of the apparent sports journalist?
Being competitive is one thing but the ultimate facts that count in football is chances created and how many of those you convert. On that reflection we seem lucky to have 5 points.

There's a lot of good stuff in here, obviously revolving around Sanches, but Naughton comes out with credit and reminded me of how well he played against West Ham.
Clement is still experimenting and we're behind schedule - mostly down to the pathetic Siggy saga but the clear signs of improvement in the last 2 games is there for most to see.
Thick posters can bang on about chances all day long and regurgitate the most boring stat in football of shots on target, but we should be looking to see our XI getting on the ball a bit more - as was evidenced in the second half v Watford and especially the first half v West Ham. Martinez used to always say that if the performances were right the results will follow.
We can't run before we walk but we can let the leash off a little and we can play Mesa. This is becoming a scandal and one that needs to be closely watched. He needs a run of games and for him to feel his place isn't in jeopardy the first mistake he makes. If that means playing Leon alongside him to provide a strong midfield platform for the 4 in front to interchange then maybe it's worth a go.
But there's been no great footballing reason not to play him and this may have been to our detriment.
So when clowns like Chief comment on me trying to justify my hopes for the team post One Trick and Wardrobe, then we at least need to see our best team before everyone hangs us out to dry.
We've been competitive in every game - that's a massive plus and a good indicator for a decent season. Now it's time to be a bit more expressive and expansive. Clement - it's over to you.
But seriously, watch this. We are not far away.

The move on 2.19
Llorente could just simply not do that, as simple as it looks. That's Bony's massive strength. He's big and composed and he opened them up a treat. This is only going to get sharper and better.
Could Tom have put Tammy in?

The move on 2.38, slick passing, Sanches little flick outside of his foot and we get a clear eye at the box. The ball in could have been better or Olsson could have attacked into the box - but this is more like it.

fabulous thread, always enhanced with thorough analysis and positive belief
ur continued admirable upbeat positivity must surely grind down the most downbeat negatives on this site - who unfortunately seem to be in the majority
the negatives on on this site: - only post when negative stuff happens - offer nothing, esp when the going gets tough - just predictable criticism - clearly lack football-intelligence - never ever proffer a constructive way-fwd - and seem to thrive in our failure
the negatives ought to be named and shamed.............

A lot aren't interested in proper football discussion. They haven't got the grasp to chew the fact, just chuck the bile.
I wonder how many watched the Sanches video? Loads of good stuff in there from him and us and there's a good, footballing platform [slowly] building.

I thought he played pretty well on the match viewing. Settled and composed, not trying miracles with every touch. Bony going off really damaged us. I’m really not a fan of congesting the play against poor teams though. We are not good in that sort of arm wrestle lottery. Need to back ourselves more and make other teams worry about us. Watford were cacking themselves when we belatedly did that. Big test for Clement coming up. It’s probably now or never in the next two games.

if they had bothered to watch they would chose to enjoy the odd error, mistake
fortunately the coaching team will be absolutely building on that good stuff from him and us - the deft touches; the clever inter-play; the fight and determination
the Negatives: the whining utter flaky stupid types...............whatever, fack 'em,name n shame them, the whimps

We're all hoping for big things from a young kid and his reputation has unfortunately come before him.
People have expected a lot based on this and it was hard to not get too carried away when he signed.
He's got so much to learn still, especially sometimes "less is more" - so much more! But contrast the Newcastle game to West Ham and the improvement on the ball and decision making is all there to see.
If, as hoped and somewhat expected, he continues to improve his "game for the team" at that rate, he will be a serious player for us. You get the feeling he'll have some games when he'll be on fire and lots of the killer balls will come off for him.
He also puts a decent defensive shift in and I love his strength and shoulder barges. He is class.
