Swans Finance Situation 10:42 - Dec 29 with 24120 views | blaine_scfc | Chris Wathan just tweeted an article which may be of interest. Swans Finance Situation on 11:31 - Jan 5 with 2315 views | Devz00 | So, to summarise: - We get £85m from TV income, we spend £80m of it on wages. - Commercially we only make £10m, which is the second worst in the league. - Our match day income is just £8m. Arsenal make more than our entire season's worth of match day revenue in 3 games. Flipping heck.

But what defines natural ability? Coolness under pressure is a skill. Skills are, by in large learnt

You go to football practice (noun) to practise (verb) football. If you practised for 10,000 hours you'd have a lot of practice under your belt... [Post edited 5 Jan 2016 12:56]

Ha. It does tell me that we need to expand though. At least now, looking at this thread, I can see why it hasn't been as straight forward as it could have been.

'Natural' ability? Can you explain what is 'natural' about ability? After all, the very definition of ability is talent or skill in a particular area, and we know using our understanding of psychology, that skill acquisition essentially derives from the information we process from our surroundings, in that our brain receives then and delegates accordingly.. This is not just regarding sport, this is learning anything, piano, juggling, morris dancing.. Coolness under pressure? Probably something that comes well with years of 'realistic rehearsal' in upon which to build strong schema units on. It's not something you wake up on a Monday morning with.. Sorry to distract from the original thread, someone make a thread or something..

No those skills, natural talent and coolness under pressure cant be fully learnt. Natural talent can go a long way to getting you to the top but then coolness under pressure can be the difference between being a multiple champ or not, in Golf Colin Montgomery 7 times Order of Merit champion never won a major, a guy still playing Sergio Garcia always there or there about but never won a major. They both can be left with putts at clutch times that they would normally get but you know that they will miss, other players perhaps less talented like a Faldo you know will sink it, more likely to sink it in fact than when playing a tour event and as a viewer you know it. Zidane fantastic when it mattered, World Cups, Champions League matches, in a big match when it mattered it was very likely he would be the most influential player on the park, yet in ordinary league games he was often ordinary. Cantona on the other hand who the French called 'a big player in a little game and a little player in a big game' would often look a World beater against ordinary opposition but was often anonymous in important matches against top teams particularly in cross border and international comps. Zidane is a Worldwide recognised great and Cantona is recognised as just another good player. Natural ability can be an instinct, Maradona hand of God, or a centre forward that is taught to head the ball back in the direction it comes from but glances it instead and doesn't know why he did it, he probably realised where the goalie was going and put it the other side in a split second and without knowing why he did it himself. Talents do things that they would not be taught to do or has never been done before, Pele let the ball run past him instinctively knowing the keeper was going to follow him in the 70' WC the ball would have run into the keepers hands if he stayed there, Pele then chased after the ball, also Pele tried to chip the goalie from the halfway line, had that been tried before ?, knowing how heavy the balls and pitches were in the decades before that WC. Panenka chipped a penalty against Sepp Maier to win the European Championships, do you think any coach in the World would have told him to do that ?, Germany had won the Euro's in 72 and WC in 74 they were excellent it was not that long really after the war you can imagine how important it was to the Czechs, it was all on Panenkas penalty in the penalty shoot out and he chipped him. There is lots of stuff to do with natural talent and coolness under pressure that you can't really teach. [Post edited 5 Jan 2016 13:33]

Swans Finance Situation on 14:24 - Jan 5 with 1958 views | Landore_Jack | Staying up is crucial for Swansea The author of the Swiss Ramble blog takes his customary in depth and meticulous look at Swansea City's finances in his latest post. In many ways, the Swans have been seen as a model of the way in which a 'smaller' club can succeed. All Premiership clubs particularly want to stay up this year to enjoy the riches of the new broadcasting contract. However, the need is particularly pressing for Swansea City. They are more dependent on television revenue than any other club in the Premier League other than Crystal Palace. Broadcasting revenue accounts for 82 per cent of their revenue, with 11 per cent coming from commercial income and just seven per cent from match day. This reflects the fact that they have not increased ticket prices in the five years they have been in the Premier League. Although they have not made a loss since 2011, and broke through the £100m revenue barrier in the last financial year, they return one of the smaller profits in the Premier League. In 2014-15 the after tax profit was £1.1m, a reduction of £0.6m. In part this reflects how much such figures are affected by player sales. Although most of their contracts are performance related, at 69 per cent the wages to turnover ratio is one of the highest in the league, although well below where it has been in the past. In the longer run, there are issues about the stadium, which is on a long lease from the City Council, to sort out. The immediate imperative is to avoid relegation. [Post edited 5 Jan 2016 14:25]

London prices. Their match day staff are probably of £30k a year.

Swans Finance Situation on 11:16 - Jan 5 by jackonicko | In short, the answer to the question is no. The accounts don't show that. The cost of the player is capitalised, and that cost is limited to the transfer fee, any transfer levies and any payments to intermediaries (agents). The cost is then spread over the length of the contract. If the player subsequently extends the contract, then the remaining cost on the balance sheet is spread out over the longer period. Any remaining amounts on the balance sheet are written down (impaired) if the amount still remaining on the balance sheet exceeds the likely value that can be generated from any sale. However, no increases are made in the carrying value on the balance sheet, if the value of the player is thought to exceed the amount on the balance sheet. So, the accounts do not give you any information on likely sale values. |
Thanks for the clarification. So reviewing the accounts doesn't actually give the full picture with regard to the overall value of a football club. If you just run down the list of senior players in the squad and put down an estimate of their market value then it would at least give an indication of the value of the squad. A proportion of which could be capitalised if needed (e.g., if we were to be relegated) by selling a few players and either replacing with cheaper options or not at all.
