Will labour ever get back into power? 10:52 - Dec 23 with 19647 views | mrrockin | I've been following the recent labour news with amusement and a bit of sadness (yes genuinely) - it's painfully obvious that the tories are going to win an increased majority possibly even a landslide in 2020. By this point the left of labour will have a stranglehold over labour and this will mean there is no hope for the right of labour which closely mirrors the early 80's with the breakaway of the SDP. Personally I believe the likes of Denis Healey made a mistake and the moderates should have left on mass to join the SDP and leave the socialists to keep the red flag flying high. Maybe as CB has long argued it is time for a voting change. I was very skeptical about voting change but I personally thought the coalition largely did a superb job and I was disappointed it didn't continue in many ways. I largely support this Gov but I'm more in the centre so I'd prefer the right wingers to be more restrained which the coalition provided. My point is that under the present system labour will never recover and it might be time for a realignment to take place in British politics. [Post edited 23 Dec 2015 10:53]

Will labour ever get back into power? on 13:08 - Dec 29 by Highjack | Yes I'm grateful for what I've got and there's nothing wrong with that. I've got a nice warm safe house and I have a nice comfortable life in good health and happiness. I go skiing every year and i have cash on the hip if I want to treat myself. Meanwhile, 50% of all humans that have ever lived have died horrific, painful deaths from malaria. Things can always be improved but it's certainly not a Tory thing to be grateful for what you have because life and health is always bigger than petty politics. |
As I've said previously they don't know they're born.

Health and politics unrelated then? Not for those on extremely low incomes/those with disabilities, you know, the non skiers amongst us. Like I said, your comments do not relate to the thread which is about British politics to be fair.

Possibly. But so will the Tories after the referendum vote on the EU. It'll be carnage for that whichever way people choose to vote.

The comments do relate to this thread when commentators in this thread mention "poverty" or suggest that being grateful for the small mercies and relative luxury we have from living in a wealthy country is somehow a bad thing. It was a direct response to those posts, it's sort of how forums work. Also I saw many people with disabilities who can ski on a documentary called the Paralympics.

Having less money in our pocket is not being poorer if you have a state welfare system looking after you from cradle to grave and state capital infrastructure projects on going in the community all the time. You mrrockin don't seem to want to pay taxes, no doubt you take the attitude that those unfortunate people in society that need the state to look after them should what - just be left to their own devices and rot and die as a consequence is it ? Yeah, we finally have peace in the Middle East after nearly a century of British aerial bombing. Knew just one more bombing campaign would sort things out.

There are too many individuals in this country who simply can't be arsed because they've been given a free ride from the day they were born. It is not right that there are people who have been on benefits their whole life that are better off than people who work full time. That's not moral, that's not 'social justice' but it's happening and people like you want to give them more.

This is just the sort of binary choice that is so endemic in the left. I think our adventures in the Middle East have been disastrous, that doesn't mean you never intervene. If Saddam had planted bombs in Paris we would have been justified in launching air strikes.

No again the classic 'nasty mr right winger' mentality. I happen to believe answers don't always lie with the State, I believe business, individuals and charities can do more. I believe there are better ways of helping people, I don't necessarily always believe the likes of Leanne Wood have the answers.

What are you on about? What makes you think I'm left wing? You're making stupid assumptions again. Of course it was a binary choice. Was there a middle choice to just bomb them a little? I don't remember that one.

You think the unfortunate should rely on charities ? How much income tax should people pay ? How much VAT should we pay on Goods ? How much should Corporation tax be ? You don't believe people should get free education so how much do you think people should pay for education [infants, junior, secondary and university] ? How much should medical services cost [seeing a doctor for example] ? Should we have a NHS ? Should we have a large state housing stock like years ago ? Should we have nationalised industries ? Should the state subsidise libraries, parks and swimming pools ? or should just people that live behind gated communities pay privately for such things for their own private use ?
