Flat in West London (non QPR) 15:31 - Sep 8 with 4768 viewsericgen34

My son is starting at uni in Fulham, and my daughter is doing her 2nd year. They'd like to share a 2 bedrooms flat, I wonder if anybody has any pointers?

Thanks

What are you looking to find out? Cost? Best locations? Best places./agencies for them to search with?

Make sure they register for Council Tax and send a copy their student certificates to their local authority along with a copy of their tenancy agreement.

Daughter has been sharing a flat in West Kensington for the last year (Barton Road), great location but £1,400 per month. It won't be cheap and it won't be big. Might be worth looking at the suburbs, if they have to spend an extra hour a day commuting then it might be worth it.

We're hoping for £150/w each maximum. I think they will have to go out quite a while, but then transport becomes expensive and also maybe less good to socialise with other students.

You might be able to get a 2 bed for £1200pcm, if you're talking just rent and not bills etc, but as above it won't be big and it won't be anywhere near the type of place you can get further out. There's not huge disparity in cost between zones TBH (for travel), not in comparison to cost once you start to move closer to zone 1.

I work for a uni in the 'burbs and we charge £131 per week for student accomodation which is basically just a room with a loo/shower en suite and shared cooking facilities 20 minutes further walk into suburbia.

Yes, last year my daughter was in student accommodation in Paddington for £135, which was great, but only first year students could get those

Where's there a Uni in Fulham?

Don't expect much under £1200-£1500 per month plus bills, my daughter has completed her degree and now doing her 'masters' rented munerous places dotted around London, and to me all shitholes not worth the rent, currently in Stoke Newington, sharing what was a two bed flat, rented out as three bed as the lounge is used as a bedroom, check the inventory very carefully when they find a place, amazing what a difference when they do leave the 'luxury' apartment, and a big chunk of the deposit witheld due to 'damage' to was is already stuff only fit for the tip.

Had to threathen one of her landords with being used as a firelighter when I torched his property, unless the full deposit was returned.

Yes, I worry about that, London being so ridiculously expensive now :-(

6 berth boat with 1 person going to a Fulham uni, would be rude not to ask if she wanted a lodger for £50 a week.

Surely the university itself has an accommodation service? They're usually a tad cheaper than the market rate, and will be vetted, which is always useful.

Yes they do, and we'll ask, but it's worth asking around too :-)

Might sound a stupid suggestion but by the time they take into account travelling and all that you might as well look for a place in a town on one of the main line routes into London which would be a shedload cheaper. Friend of mine currently works in the city and house shares in Tooting, 12 stops down the Northern Line, moans that they would never be able to buy a property in London, yet moving to a place like Hemel or such like and the commute wouldn't be that much different and also a much greater chance of buying a property or one where they wouldn't have to share.

I know an older couple who run a great B&B in Croxley, 5 mins walk to underground station and trains every ~15 mins to London (Metropolitan line). They take long term guests too. Nice garden. Near walking on the Moor. PM me if you want details. (I met my wife through these folks, 30 years ago, so know them well).
