Give him his due, Southgate made the right subs at the right time. Definitely coming together now.

Spain will be a different proposition, so looking forward to that.

Very positive about his own motivation and his commitment to the club.

I think Michi has lost the half a small child he was carrying when he joined us, looking at the pre-season pix. Let's hope that means he's going to be sharper when the season starts.

Totally agree. Their movement and passing was fantastic to watch. We look like Subutteo figures in comparison.

I'm hoping the semis show the shackles finally coming off this England team but not holding out much hope.

Yes, it's the typical thing that happens if you're high profile you somehow get another chance but some poor sap in the lower leagues would get a permanent ban for something much more minor.

Maybe corruption isn't seen as a big deal as it's so widespread in FIFA/UEFA (educated guess). Dunno. But it's pretty sh*t and makes a mockery of having any kind of faith in our officials. This bloke shouldn't be reffing anything other than domestic lower leagues (as I doubt betting syndicates would have such a financial interest in tampering with those).

Good luck to your daughter this season.

They only seem to get on when GS gets desperate, e.g. we're not scoring with five minutes to go or the other team takes the lead with fifteen minutes to go or someone else is dead on their feet.

I don't think they'd be starters under him either, particularly at Foden's expense.

Yes Terry that's a really good point and a mark against him staying. I wonder if it would put other clubs off as well because he's not exactly proving his fitness by not playing.

Yep. I also think that matches between GB players are always a bit weird and can't really be used as a yardstick for overall ability. Boulter being beaten by Dart and Draper by Norrie at Wimbledon does not really reflect their current standard of play and both winners were knocked out in the next round. Boulter was clearly put off by Dart crying through most of the third set, and I think she would have had a better chance of beating Wang in the next round.

Harriet has nowhere near the ceiling that Emma does, although she maximises her talent and is extremely focused. Her second serve is a glaring problem for her and she doesn't have the weapons that Emma has.

Katie has a lot of talent but is not quite at Emma's level if both were playing at their best. I do think Katie has the talent to get to fourth rounds though at least, which is impressive but not quite Emma's potential if she manages to stay injury free for long enough to play regularly.

Yes but it's an impression about lack of focus, not reality. She does fewer than 20 advertisement days in a year - hardly burdensome and probably fewer than a lot of other sportspeople but no-one says Djoko lacks focus or Messi or Ronaldo and they are everywhere in ads.

The injury thing is also pretty common in tennis. It's a brutal sport. The injuries she's had can be career-ending. Laura Robson was a top talent that had to end her career after recurrent wrist ligament injuries. Juan Martin del Potro also had a string of injuries and no-one said he wasn't trying hard enough.

I think the jealousy thing is a big issue. Some people don't like to see young women being rich and successful. She can't do much about that though or her looks.

I've seen Emma down at the National Tennis Centre practising with children's tennis balls when coming back from injury. She looked very focused.

I thought that too. Especially Foden. Foden also took the ball off him when he was about to take a free-kick and also had a go at him when Ebs took a poor shot instead of passing, despite Foden doing similar himself on a number of occasions. I think he doesn't want him to succeed as he's basically the alternative on that left side, or one of them.

Ebs is too nice back, and was equally deferential to Zaha at Palace which held him back.

The worst times are when Ebs does a run and is in spacce and they ignore him and turn to the other side and then when there's nothing there pass to him in a static position when there's much less he can do to affect the game.

At this moment in time, whatever the situation, your thoughts on Chris Willock
at 03:01 8 Jul 2024

I can't really choose any of the options because for me it depends on factors I'm not privy to. Like how much he would cost to stay. Or how much he wants to stay. Or how ragged his hamstrings really are. I hope someone in the club is thinking about those things really carefully and is not just thinking with their heart or on past glories.

For instance, I wanted us to keep Johansen and Austin after their loan spells but I would have definitely said no if I'd known how ridiculous their wages were and how basically crocked they were too and in Austin's case not really being arsed about being here.

I've loved watching Chris for most of his time with us but it has also been painful in more recent times, so I wouldn't be devastated if he left. On the other hand a highly motivated, fit Willock at a decent salary would be a joy.

I don't think a lot of people who criticise her in the comments section of sports pages have any idea how absolutely difficult it is to win a Grand Slam tennis major. I just looked at a couple of female players in the top 20 (not household names) and neither had gone past the fourth round of a GS. One, Ludmilla Samsonova, is 25 so four years older than Emma and has played in 21 GSs, mostly in the main draw. She has only reached the fourth round twice in a GS and never any further. And yet she's been as high as 12th in the world rankings. She was the 15th seed at Wimbledon and went out in the third round to the 17th seed. Emma in contrast is world number 135 and yet beat the world number 9 in the third round and reached the fourth round herself.

Emma has been able to play only nine GSs as she's only 21 and missed a year through being on crutches and couldn't play much when doing her A levels but has reached the fourth round twice as well as winning the US Open. It's just bloody hard.

It did overlap with the football. I watched Emma as I’m away and footy isn’t great on your phone!

She looked pretty ruthless beating world number nine in straight sets to get into the fourth round. Last time she did that at Wimbledon she won the US Open just afterwards!

She’s got a good chance in the next round playing someone who put out a seed who qualified for the tournament but Emma knows more than anyone that even qualifiers can be dangerous. Good luck in tbe last 16.

He did so well. Practically nerveless. Just fell a bit short but what a platform for his career.

I agree. One of those tired old tropes.

She also got into the fourth round of Wimbledon just before the US Open and was 20th in the world at juniors at the age of 15.

Draper was runner up at Wimbledon juniors at the age of 16. He has also struggled a bit with injury/fitness but hopefully is fit and healthy now for the rest of WImbledon but has so much potential.

No-one's saying you can't make a sh*tty little comment but don't expect someone not to pull you up on it either.

I'm very jealous. There are some brilliant women's matches these days. Should be a great day out. Outside chance of a British player, if not for the singles matches then for some doubles. May also be some junior matches worth looking out for on the outside courts.

I'm sure all those hours and years practising and going through illness and injury so she thought she might not be able to play tennis at all this year she's grateful that you a) care what she looks like and b) give her grudging support for getting into the third round of what is in effect the world championships of tennis.
