I think we were on for about £3m then. He’s had a rough season though, so probably less |

I’ve got broadly the same mindset as Fireboy. I’ll back a manager unless they are as obviously out of their depth as Bradley and Duff. Once they make it clear they don’t want to be here, that changes. I’d guess this board was roughly 50/50 split on him before. It’s pretty much unanimous now. Fans at the ground will follow soon if we keep playing like we are. I’d hope he gets put out of his misery sooner rather than later. |

There’s different issues in play. We’re mid table with only Naughton and Christie as cover for our entire back four, no #10 at the club and a choice between two raw (being very kind to Vipotnik here) strikers. That’s impressive. Being inconsistent isn’t a bad thing when the cards are stacked against you. He made his comments after the Luton game (Darling was rumoured to be close to signing before it). Since then, we’ve been spanked twice and robbed an undeserved point against West Brom. There has been a change in the players attitudes as well as the results. |

Yes I’d agree. He probably knows his stock will drop, but he is powerless to do anything about it, so looks like he’s trying to speed things up. Once he’s lost the players, he’s not going to win them back over. I believe he knows that. Eerily similar to Garry Monk taking over from Laudrup, getting them fired up then spanking Cardiff. As long as we don’t give someone like that the job full time! |

Everything changed with those comments. Until then I was behind him, getting mid table results with the playing staff you’ve described there was impressive, regardless of whether you liked the style or his demeanour. As soon as he’s said that though, he’s lost the respect and trust of the fanbase and seemingly the players as well. Dead man walking. |

I’d like to see him gone before then. It looks like it’s a matter of time, so why wait for more disinterested defeats. Only plausible reason I can see is it could screw up the transfer window. |

Everyone hated Duff before that, mainly due to the abysmal results but also because of the dross we played. He compounded it with those comments while we were in the relegation zone and finished off by serving up a feeble surrender to a team we’d beat four or five times in a row. Anyone with any sense could see he was getting his excuse in early. Had we been challenging for playoffs at the time, most would have agreed with him. |

They are assuming we’ll play like that for the rest of the season. We won’t. There will be a parting of ways sooner or later and we’ll get the intensity and desire back. Those West Brom comments have potentially cost us Darling and almost certainly cost Williams his job and reputation. If he’s still here next weekend, it will probably be more of the same. |

What are the PSR implications? If we’ve got money now but can’t spend it, surely sacking a manager makes it worse. Would it stop us buying Low or doing other transfer business? All the performances since his first West Brom comments have had the same sort of lethargy. From the outside, it looks like he’s lost them. I think it’s coming even if it does impact the transfer window. I’m sure Coleman speaks to senior players regularly. |

I don’t trust him either. I don’t see how anybody can. I’m fine with a weakened side tomorrow, but we know he won’t give a second thought to dumping us in it halfway through the season for a relatively minor upgrade. We will never know when he’s going to try to force a move with no warning. We just know he probably will. |
| Forum Reply | Is the FA cup being devalued at 15:32 11 Jan 2025
It’s been devalued for years. Since the rewards for getting top 4 and getting to/staying in the PL dwarfed it. I don’t mind admitting I don’t care about it, whereas growing up I absolutely loved it. 3rd round draw day (if we got there) was one of the highlights of the season. The option of top 3 and FA cup winner would make a bit of a difference to the bigger teams. I’m not sure if it’s even feasible and even if it was the FA would never go against the big clubs on it. Wouldn’t really affect us anyway. Like the league cup when we won it, I’d get interested if we got through a couple of rounds, but wouldn’t be bothered if we went out early on. It’s a shame, because it did used to have a magic about it. |

Third paragraph - probably all of it. We don’t have the individual players to drive through midfield and open up gaps and we don’t have the kind of synergy the Martinez and Rodgers teams had that let them pass and move their way through opponents. As Richard said, those teams were together a long time and players instinctively knew what their teammates would do. Plus they were better individually as well as collectively. |

Kind of agree. We’re taking the ball from an area we are likely to be turned over, to the other side of the pitch where we usually have a numerical advantage. I wouldn’t say preventing the opposition nicking the ball and counter attacking in areas they have more players doesn’t have purpose, but I agree it’s not a very effective attacking tactic, particularly when compared to when Martinez and Rodgers teams did it. |
| Forum Reply | Brendan mentions us in his press conference at 11:40 10 Jan 2025
Yes, absolutely. I’m not trying to imply Williams and this group of players do it anywhere near as effectively as Rodgers and his. It’s the same principle, it’s not pointless possession and it does increase the amount of ball we have, which some people get annoyed about. Without doubt, it’s slower and more predictable. As Richard said, it’s far more effective when you vary the side and angle you attack from. In fairness, Rodgers was a better manager and he was working with better players. |

Maybe there should be a different word for it. Being knacketed from working yourself to the bone and not being at your peak, which elite athletes need to be to compete, are both versions of fatigue but not really the same thing. Both are valid though. |
| Forum Reply | Southampton v Swansea City : FA Cup Match day thread at 14:06 9 Jan 2025
It’s relative isn’t it. The likes of Allen, Naughton and anyone else in our squad could play local football 5 days a week. The lads who work 60 hour weeks at the steelworks, go out on the weekend, smoke and still play Saturday and Sunday are fit enough for the level they play at. It’s in no way comparable to competing against elite athletes who are at their peak fitness. Nor is it comparable to bring a miner. |
