Remember seeing them play in the Mayfair Suite (Top Rank) back in the mid 80s when I was 15. First time I got served a pint. Jerry Forrest. Heavyweight boxer Although not a full name there's a black American Sprinter called Kenny Bednarek. |

We all knew it was going to be very tricky to stay up this season. Whoever is the manager will be stuck with the same bunch of players and it's ultimately their qualities or lack of that make or break the season. Martin definitely deserves a proper go at the Prem but he can't persist with the suicidal faffing about at the back otherwise he deserves the bullet. It always surprises me how sections of the fan base turn on the manager after a few defeats. It's almost like we're not allowed to lose football matches ever. Maybe we could revolutionise football by employing managers on a three game 100k contract and get through aprox 12-15 managers a season!! |

Mainly just keyboard warriors Nick. Thankfully most posters on here understand you can be critical without resorting to being abusive. |

I'll at least have some fond memories of that spell where was tormenting championship fullbacks and left them punch drunk before Fraser would replace him to deliver the knockout blow. Z |
| Forum Reply | The Solution Is Clear For Russell Martin If He Is To Stay In His Job at 17:16 3 Sep 2024
I think THB will be the guy to drop out if Martin goes for a back four. He's been the poorest of three mediocre CBs and that's been reflected by Martin subbing him off early in the last couple games. The best solution for Martin to keep his job may well be down to the realisation that the likes of Smallbone and in particular Armstrong are not good enough for the Prem. Smallbone may come good but he looks like a back up player to me and surely either Cornet , Dibling or Archer offer more quality, threat and goals than Armstrong will, and it's not like he hasn't had the chance to prove himself at this level. |

And who can blame him. 400k a week..yes please. I'd probably be prepared to be John Westwoods personal man servant for half that weekly wage. |

Yes St Mark we have a squad of average players but what would you expect from a newly promoted side and hardly a footballing giant compared to many other Prem teams. I agree we may regret not signing a more physical centre forward but I'm hoping Breraton Diaz or possibly Stewart if he ever proves his fitness can step into this role. |

That's very much my thinking , a quid bus ride from Lordswood to Portswood, a few beers in the Drummond. Share a few joints as we walk to Brook , more beer in the Brook , enjoy a hazy night with live rock n roll and a stagger/cab/ bus back home . ..all in about 50/60 quid inc ticket. I certainly cant afford to be fleeced out of many 100s of pounds to fatten the pension funds of some poxy old has beens . |
| Forum Reply | I think we are overlooking a big problem. Jack Stephens at 09:00 27 Aug 2024
It wouldn't surprise me to see Martin go with a back 4 for the next few games as the main issue is a lack of goal threat or attacking creativity. But I would personally drop THB out of the side as hes been the worst of the 3 CBs in the last 2 games. I think THB will come good and take Stephen's place eventually but he clearly needs to adjust to the demands of the Prem. I'd go with Taylor LB, KWP RB, Stephen's and Bedders as CBs ..about 600 prem games experience between them. |

A great earner for them. The masses love a bit of nostalgia. Just old fellas with silly hair cuts now. |

Saturday was a poor performance and to be outclassed and dominated by Forest is worrying. We lost our first 4 games on our return to the Prem in the 2012/13 Season , conceding 14 goals and losing our first home to the mighty Wigan two nil . I'm not passing judgement on this team and manager after just two games. |

Definitely better having the away lot in the Kingsland/Chapel corner and at times the Northam was pretty loud and everyone else joined in so I think it'll be a sucess. We just need to up the quality on the pitch and the fans will respond no doubt. |

Agree we've not exactly set the world on fire with our transfer activity since SR took over but it's not been as shocking as you state either imo. Baz.. Work in progress.. Potential profit or money back in a few years. Lis.. Profit ABK.. Worrying regarding his medical.. Agreed.. But could still turn a profit. Lavia. Yep Aribo.. Decent player for us now. Cost 6m Mara. Got our money back. Caleta Car.. Virtually got our money back. Loss of about 1m Edozie. Jury out.. Beats his man but lacks end product.. Squad player.. Certainly not a shocking signing. Larios. Crock. Too small agreed. Orsic.. Terrible. Agreed. Alcaraz. Good but raw. Not right for Possession football. Should make a decent profit on 10m we paid. Bree. Exactly what you'd expect for 700 grand.. Cheap n cheerful. Done OK. Tall Paul.. Agreed. Disaster. Totally wrong for us. Money wasted. Sulemana.. Headless chicken.. But his pace will at least mean we recoup a chunk of his fee.. But yes a shocking signing for 22m. Manning and Lumley were freebies.. No lose situation. Stewart.. Disastrous waste of 8m. Charles. So far disappointing , certainly not worth the 11m we spent but young and will get better. The others are just kids and likely on low wages.. Not a major issue. For me only Larios, Sulemana, Stewart, Orsic and Tall Paul have been Shocking signings.. |

Clubs fault for signing a L1 kid and putting straight into a Prem side.. Absolutely Mental. Fans back Baz... His name is sung inside the stadium and he acknowledges this support. It's only on forums where he rightly gets criticised for his shot saving deficiencies. Looks too small for me... Sorry it's a pass for me. |
| Forum Reply | Any positives? at 11:25 18 Aug 2024
Yep, I thought it was a pretty good performance just the goalie error and an inability to find a way past the mass of Newcastle bodies blocking shots. Midfield three played really well, Suga looked quality and overall . It really shouldn't be an issue bringing in a higher calibre keeper. The hard thing at this level is finding players who can score in quantity and or create good chances. It's likely going to be a tough old season , this will no doubt fuel the more negative types that post on here. I'm going to try and be positive as always, and stick with the manager and players . |

I guess 11m is not a huge amount if he fails to shine in the Prem. I can't help but feel that similar to Armstrong he'll get found out by Premier league centre backs and will be easily nullified. Armstrong was frankly awful in his two Prem seasons and 4 goals puts him the Mara class of duds. I reckon he'll do a better job out wide for us this season.. He's no way a centre forward. |
