Transfer rumours 2024
at 15:56 7 Sep 2024

I guess its something to do with cashflow, but you may have gathered I am no expert!

The other reason is that it would open things up to corruption. Buying club helps selling club by agreeing to cover part of the buy out by giving the incoming player a huge signing on fee; effectively a transfer fee... That sort of thing...

Transfer rumours 2024
at 09:38 7 Sep 2024

Come on, Nico - if anyone is going to say something DEFINITIVE on this thread, it has to be you, right?

I'm with Padula's in that my understanding is that whilst players can be paid off during the window and technically I guess they can be picked up by other clubs, BUT the Football League would not allow them to be registered by another club to play in any competition. So, whilst legally, they cannot stop any company from employing anyone who is eligible for that job, they CAN stop them playing in their compeition.

Is that right?

In other words, if Hayden was under contract to Newcastle when the window shuts and then gets released by mutual consent, then he can get offered a contract by a new club, but cannot be registered until the January Transfer Window.

Leave it, mate, walk away, walk away! If they don't want to get it, then let them not get it. I think that you were very, very clear.

No-one can claim to be a "free agent" if they were released outside of a transfer window.

...which is what Padula's Shampoo has been saying all the way through the thread!

I think he is right too!

Blackburn Away
at 21:14 1 Sep 2024

Just make sure you explain to them last season was an anomaly. It's always cold in Blackburn and we always lose 2-0 to a last minute goal (or it always seems to be the case).

We'll never sell out there, so you'll be able to pick a spot away from the "lads"; you'll probably see a few people in a similar situation to say hello to!

Where in Cumbria have you moved to?

Defending crosses
at 21:10 1 Sep 2024

Not really helped by the fact that 33 crosses were allowed. Is that high? Sounds quite high to me. I maintain what I say about our full backs though; they do not stop enough crosses coming in; Jimmy because of his poor positioning and Kenny because he won't get close to his winger and keeps backing off.

Back post crosses from the left are usually OK with Jimmy at the back, but ones coming in from the right might find their way to Kenny, who is not the biggest to defend and is an obvious target.

That said I DO agree with the point made in this thread how exposed Paal especially has been with Kolli, Lloyd or Saito in front of him. Their collective lack of a defensive instinct means that Kenny in particular has been overloaded if Colback or Field can't cover.

No doubt they will be working on all this and hopefully they learn fast as Sheff W is another team that will target our full backs..

Expiring contracts

Can't defend at the moment. Needs to develop. Absolutely should have gone on a loan to L2 / L1 like Eze and Chair did so that he could prove that he can play game on game improving all the way.

As I say, if they all REALLY think he should be treated better and he refuses to go on loan or to sign a new deal, off you pop. Sooner rather later too. Of course, if you want to develop and help the club, sign for another couple of seasons and knuckle down.

If the club really don't want you, there must be a reason why and we need to trust that.

Expiring contracts

That's fine, but wouldn't it be good to start a season "ready". Our squad has not been fully shaped 'til the end of the window because so many players leave, which means that we throw a game or two away.

This season was especially clear; the opening day team was always going to struggle with the forward players it had to play.

If Kolli really won't sign, they he needs to go in January, but I am sure that he will sign an extension if offered as the club means a little more to him than it did to Armstrong.

Third choice. At that level, I suspect Alfie May will score more than Stansfield...

His ball control leaves a lot to be desired though. Head down, push, run, stop, pass back in the main. Something there, but, like Kolli needs more game time. Surprised neither of them are out on loan. We made this mistake with Armstrong, hoping it is not going to be a repeat.

Convinced in my own head that Wonderwall was nothing until that parody by Mike Flowers came out.

Probably completely wrong.

Jimmy Dunne - undroppable
at 09:56 31 Aug 2024

...and I think that is right, especially if we have someone better and more suited to that position in the club.

Listen, I LOVE Jimmy Dunn; has all the heart that Dickie lacked when the going got tough. He wants to fight back to form; Dickie just wanted to hide and run away.

BUT, he is no right back. Yes, he improved immeasurably after that first 15 minutes v Bristol C last season and he has started to settle in moving forward with the ball. Yes, his aerial presence is massively needed in this team and yes, he is good with the ball at his feet, but we are vulnerable down both wings as neither full back seems to be able to stop crosses. Paal defends too passively and Jimmy isn't always in the right position and can get done by pacy, tricky wingers.

That said, he'd be missed in the eleven specifically at set pieces. For all the Steve Cook "get out of my pub", its Jimmy that seems to get his nut on the ball most of the time when we defend corners.

Nice problem to have though...

Well yeah.

Even Stroud is better than Ward.

Agree on tonight's ref. I did not agree with his philosophy of letting every single push in the back go, but he did let them ALL go at least.

The only niggle was Cook got a card for delaying the game, yet other Luton players did the same and got nothing.

But overall, good.

Great display and a good response to how well Walsh did on Wednesday.

Some seem to think Walsh should be first choice. Not yet. Nardi has not put a foot wrong despite the fact that we have conceded 7 in 4 league games already.

Tonight he feels that has been confirmed.

Nothing to dislike there at all.

Great win.

Dykes sold apparently
at 14:09 30 Aug 2024

Worth waaaaaay more than that. If he WANTS to go, sell him for whatever you can get, but if he wants to stay, find a way of making that happen. With the influx of attacking players (Saito, Dembele, Anderson, etc.) we are still much, much better when Illias is in the team.

Just my opinion; can't be right or wrong, it is how I see it...

My personal gripe, which admittedly could be read as intended is the sign at the top of the A34. For Oxford, use all lanes.

A bit difficult in one car...
