The Knives Are Out For Russell Martin In The Media But Do They Have Substance
at 13:54 7 Sep 2024

It's true that the board and our owners are getting jittery about going back down. New players on long contracts have been signed. They know the financial implications and feelings of panic will be being felt. They didn't sack Ralph until later on in the season, and they are probably thinking we can't afford to leave it too late this time.

I personally hope RM does it and beats United and sorts it out, proving everyone wrong. I do agree that he needs to adapt his style of play and get the ball up the pitch much quicker, but he deserves a bit of time. I have my doubts that other managers could do much more with what we have. We are playing such good teams, who have spent millions on the best players in the world and I don't think we match that. We bring in "players with potential" and "players that play in West Ham and Villa reserves". We arn't matching up to even clubs like Fulham who buy proven PL players for 30 million.

Ultimately, If we keep losing, the board will act. Let's hope that doesn't happen and we start winning against United.

The Give Russell a chance thread

Probably some of my favourite memories, involve Saints beating Man United. The 3-1 was a pulsating game, we just threw everything at them in the first half and we needed the points. The 6 - 3 involving Eyal Berkovich, Ostenstad, Le Tiss, had many of us dreaming of a great season ahead. I remember us having a terrible season from that point onwards and ended up losing to Dave Jones Stockport County in the same year. Souness was manager. Remember a great comeback against Newcastle twice at the Dell. From 2 nil down with only a couple of minutes left to 2 all - a Le Tissier beauty. The Dell was a special old place, that's for sure.

You're right about beating Man U 2 -1. I had a premonition that we will witness all the sad faces of all those Mancs and glory hunter tourists as they get beat by Russell's rampant Saints.

In all seriousness, I might be just reminiscing about the 6-3 and the grey shirts, but we usually give United a game don't we. I think we could beat that lot. They have looked a shambles in the games I have seen them. Russel needs to get them to get the ball up the pitch much more quickly, with aggression and go right at them. The Leeds game last season was a turning point and RM changed tactics. Whatever he says, I think he will change things and we will go at them. We need a win , to settle everyone down that's for sure.

And yes, Russel needs to be given more time. Not only does he deserve it after the joy of Wembley last season, but sacking the manager doesn't necessarily mean things will get betteras we found out when we sacked Ralph.

Should we have spent 25 million on a striker instead?
at 17:21 31 Aug 2024

We have spent 25 million on a goalkeeper, which we were all pleased about, including me. But on reflection, and yes in hindsight after another defeat and after Ramsdale has conceded 3 goals, should we have spent 25 million on a striker? Just a thought.

Love the guy. He's so positive about our club, our fans, the manager, SFC. Glad he's signed.

More like he left us last summer for "bigger and better things and he doesn't want the "embarrassing" return to his old club.

He could hardly sneak back to his old club saying "I'm not as good as I thought. Im a failure. West Ham don't think I am good as they thought I was, they dont want me, so here I am with my tail between my legs, back where I started. Sorry I left." All rather embarrassing.

And he came here, because he loves Russel Martin. "He made me feel 10 feet tall".

Who remembers this? He was a star for Burnley, then West Ham bought him, doubled his wages and banished him to the reserves. But he was once a great player.

Any UI smokers?
at 18:33 29 Aug 2024

I am just quoting the reasoning for the ban, but the tax smokers pay might well pay for their treatment, I have no knowledge on that, but would be interested actually to know how much tax is reveived from cigarette sales and how much the NHS spends on treating people with smoking rekated illness. But in that note, sugar, alcohol, gambling whatever could be argued as a burden on the NHS. We can't ban everything!

Kier Starmer is going to ban smoking and vaping from pub gardens and outside areas, so that will include all those who smoke outside football grounds before the game, at half time and outside. I don't smoke or vape. But this is wrong imo. Does he really think that those who choose to smoke will stop smoking and the NHS won't have to deal with it anymore because of an outside ban? They will just smoke elsewhere, and still be a burden on the NHS. Some of our stewards will love that "Put your fag out or you're out (out in the streets)".

Five things I noticed at Cardiff
at 15:14 29 Aug 2024

1 and 2 - Agreed, and spoke to a few last night who admitted they buy tickets for every away game, just to be sure of being able to go to the big games, Bournemouth, London games, and just sell their ticket if they don't go. It was really strange watching a competitive game in an empty stadium.

4 - Totally agree about the kit. It's an awful kit. The number of fans wearing them too, including men 😲.

5 - Lallana will be useful. Might as well support him. Edozie we need to get rid of him. He's not good enough.

It was an entertaining game and enjoyable evening. Lots of positives and there are players who can help.us this season. Archer, looks like he could really help us. Dibling was at the heart of everything. Fernández looks like he has talent and will help us. I think Ramsdale will help us a.lot and settle the defence too. I hope on Saturday, Fernández, Archer and Dibling start to give us the spark we need. Last night, they really created chances and provided a spark. I came away feeling more positive, that actually we do have players, who will win us games this season. We will have to see.

The excuse is to help those top 6 clubs with fixture congestion and dates for their European ties. But it's rigged, totally and utterly if they avoid each other.

It was impossible for the top teams to play each other and 4 of them knew they were playing at home before the draw. All something to do with arranging dates for playing in Europe. So the top 6 all play lesser teams, fixed in advance. All the other teams, have no such arrangements to be at home or to be drawn against a lesser team. There should be outrage about this.

The draw was set up so that the top teams didn't meet each other. It's absolutely true that it was impossible for Man cIty to play Man U or for Liverpool to play Arsenal. Yes totally corrupt.

I think it's almost being fixed isn't it, so that the top teams don't meet each other and end up playing a lesser team at home.

Nketia going to Palace for 30 million. Bournemouth sign a top goalkeeper, vastly talented and experienced. We can't compete even with the clubs in and around us. Nketia is a proven PL striker for one of the biggest clubs in the league. Don't be surprised when he scores against us, and we don't score. He's much more expensive, more talented, more experienced than our strikers so it won't be a surprise, when they survive and we don't. The other clubs have better players, simple as that.

Exactly. Cheap, cheap, cheap. That's on the ownership, not the manager. Fellows has very mediocre stats in the championship. He won't be good enough for the PL.

Nonetheless, they won't accept 10 million. They will want at least 20 million and we wont pay it, so that will be that.

Brazilian striker on radar
at 21:39 26 Aug 2024

My thoughts are that had Diaz and Archer already scored a few goals in the first two games, they probably wouldn't be buying the Brazilian striker. They try to do everything as cheaply as possible and hope it works. Two games no goals, no chances, it's like sh!t we better buy another striker before the window closes. But it's another young, unproven striker with poor stats in a much poorer league than the PL. They buy them like sweets.

You're right there. It's all about money. But every year a struggle for the next 10 years, defeats most weeks, whilst SR acquire 6 more clubs with the PL money and a few more Bazunus, Maras and Tall Pauls? Hmm I think I'd rather be in the championship. But I get what you mean. Every club's supporters, who don't support the top 6 clubs, are probably saying what's the point.
