Southend Match Thread
at 09:13 20 Oct 2024

I would have to agree with you on the frustration on the players, who wanted the ball, whilst the defence was playing the ball between themselves, but are they just following the coaching and tactics of the manager? The TV commentators are just saying what the fans having been saying for a number of seasons going back to BBM, the co-chairman may like it, but it as cost us two relegations in recent seasons.

Did anyone know if Henry was injured and was taken off as a result. Also it may be me, but I thought we improved when Hendo and McBride came on and I would be tempted to start with those two in the starting eleven on Tuesday.

We were very poor tonight, I accept we have something like seven first team players missing, but we failed to open them up to a great extent, we seemed more interested in either playing sideways across the defence or playing triangles, without going forward at any great pace, which allowed Southend to get organised in defence.

I believe we have a side capable of promotion, but at times we are hamstrung by McNulty's tactics, it was at times like watching England, a good squad, but awful to watch at times. Hopefully McNulty will take the boos on board at the end of the game and change how he approaches the game on Tuesday.

I have been thinking, who would I choose to get in the first round
1. Birmingham: either home or away, a decent gate and money earner.
2. Huddersfield: as above and it is local
3. Curzon Ashton: a nice local tie and a winnable game.

No doubt we will get somebody in the south.

I thought Babayo seemed to operate on the wing, instead of operating at fullback, one thing is certain, he seems to have some pace and seemed keen to get the ball into the box at the first opportunity.

In respect to Mitchell, he may be worth an extension, but either way, if the right bid comes in for him and I don't mean peanuts, can we stop going and progressing his career.

It would also seem the injury curse as struck again, with McBride and Akinde both being out for around five to six weeks.

First half was a bit dull to watch, but second half we ripped them apart and the lad on loan from Sheffield United was very good today, and I would say our MoM based on his performance today.

I hope we get a good draw, when is it on Monday, i.e the time.

At the moment we have two young strikers on loan in Ayinde and Westley, could we not promote Oscar Kelly, who somebody mentioned that he has been scoring for the youth team recently.

The concern is more in CD, with Sassi and EEL out, and with Ferguson possibly suffering a knock yesterday, we are left with Hogan. However if Ferguson knock is slight and a few days treatment is all that is needed, then we can get by. In that Sassi should be back in a month and I am unsure of the timeframe for EEL return, so may be able to hold back on any signing at the moment.

The national league cup is a unwanted distraction, did Oldham apply the four player rule and then took one of after 15 minutes which complied with the rules of the competition.

The FA cup next week, if it is a draw, is it decided on pens or are replays still in operation for the fourth qualifying round?

Apparently McNulty took Ferguson off because he had picked up a knock.

What is worrying Rodney and McNicholas have muscle injuries, and could be out for six weeks. I wonder why are we suffering so many muscle injuries this season.

It was the same last week, get in front and instead of killing off the game, we sit back, today 2 up and second half, instead of killing off in the game, we allow them back into the game. McNulty needs to develop a ruthless streak, because his present approach off when we take the lead, to get the team to sit back, will cost us over the season and could be the difference between promotion and another season in the national league.

Gateshead management team depart
at 17:53 1 Oct 2024

It will be interesting to see the impact of them losing their management team moving twice in two years will have on the team. This may raises questions over the future of some first team players, who come January may move to Crawley to rejoin Elliott. The question is, will they go outside the club for a new manager, like Kevin Philips for example or will they look at the internal options and either way, this may impact on their league performances.

TODAY V BRAINTREE TOWN
at 10:46 29 Sep 2024

Yesterday was not a good performance, we started well and Mitchell took the goal well, then we seem to sit back and started passing it backwards and sideways, but the positive is, last season we may have conceded, under the pressure Braintree applied. It was, as somebody said an ugly win and I will take them if it helps gets us wins and keeps us in the playoffs.

I was wondering why Barlow was not on the bench, because McNulty has said now't about him being unwell or having a knock. It is a pity that Gilmour will be out for around eight weeks, he as been unlucky season with injuries. Hopefully Henry will be back next Saturday

I will give credit to Braintree, they played well yesterday and actually deserved something from the game.

Apparently Sassi could be out for six weeks, so Ferguson can establish himself in the defence.

Good result tonight, it also allowed us to give game time to Ayinde and Westley to allow them to get the experience they need.

Did Gilmour's injury look serious?

I think the squad we have are good enough for the playoffs and if we are sort out the mistakes you never know what may happen, but it will be a tight league this year.

Watching the highlights, the first goal we conceded was poor, why did the defender not just clear it,instead of juggling on his thigh and heading it weakly a few yards, straight to McCallum and it was the same with the penalty, while did Robson try passing it out to a defender surrounded by Eastleigh players, who was forced to commit a foul, instead of clearing straight down field in the first place. The second and third goals were down to poor defenders, the long throw, no one seemed to jumped to challenge for the ball. All mistakes that could be avoided.

I have just listen to McNulty, he said we should have had a number of penalties, but the officials were poor and refuse to give them, despite being obvious penalties, apparently he got a yellow for telling them so.

Sassi got a muscle knock today, which needs monitoring, but Ferguson was ill on Friday and could not travel, hopefully he will be okay for Tuesday and Henry has a minor muscle tear and is likely to miss the next two weeks.

Yet when Henderson plays he can have a big influence on the teams performance, again like many people have indicated, McNulty team selection, tactics and subs can be baffling. McNulty is still an inexperienced manager and will make mistakes, but his belief in possession football is a concern and yes, he as a big squad, but he needs learn to pick his best starting eleven and bench.

We need a win on Tuesday at Hartlepool to get back on track.

I notice that Henry and Ferguson was missing from the squad today, I wonder why.

I will be interested to see what McNulty says.

According to the Oldham fans site, a number of teams opted out of the competition including York, Southend, Solihull and Hartlepool according to their site. Oldhams fans think it is a distraction to their promotion hopes.

I would put out many of the youth team and squad not getting game time, rather then the first team for this pointless competition.
