| News Comment | Southampton V Sheffield Wednesday The Verdict at 12:18:27
Absolutely, anyone in the midfield/attack could have got MotM and of course that is very often the case. However, over the course of the unbeaten run (and absolutely must be considered for Player of the Season come May) either Bedbarek or Harwood-Bellis should be a shoe-in. Week after week they look imperious, dont get MotM but blooming 'eck they provide the basis for everyone else to shine. |
| News Comment | How Many Of The Southampton Squad Will Still Be Here After Transfer Window at 11:07:28
Che will go as he's in the last year of his contract. Could see JWP staying, 'give us a year to bounce straight back up and you cement a Saints legend position,' if there are no Stinking Rich 7 bids. Like to see it but doubt it. Like the theory that Lavia might stay so he can go to City for 40 mil next Summer. Could be a runner. Would be good not to completely overhaul the defence AND the midfield. Both would fit Rusty's style. It's been speculated that Mara is unsettled due to personal reasons (homesickness?) so may go, but he'd make a great CF in Russell's game. plan. Perraud will have few suitors, though he is good imo. Lyanco and Stephens also good fits to the new system, though surely you need pace with the full backs 'inverted' (whoever came up with that nosensical technical word?) ABK would be excellent to keep for that reason, plus a full season would increase his value. Sadly, he's in the German squad so will want a higher profile.......and if that shoulder keeps popping? Give Tino a pay rise (rumoured to be 'only 8k a week') to keep him for a season and boost his value. Djenepo and Aribo??????? Do they fit Russell's style? Could see a team (in 4 1 2 3) from players likely to still be around of Bazunu (or Mc Carthy) Tino (or Bree) Lyanco (or Bednarek) Stephens Perraud (or Larios) Diallo Smallbone Alcaraz Sulemana (or Edozie) Mara (or A Armstrong) Tella Bench could also include S Armstrong, Aribo, Djenepo Obviously some of those will go, but there is the basis of a decent Championship side there with several having potential to develop into PL quality players if we get promoted at some point. Rusty will add some players who will fit his system too and the sales will provide some financial stability. As JWP and Lavia are likely to go it is central midfielders/defensive midfielders we need most desperately. Am looking forward to this season (hoping we have a top half finish at least) so we can be playing matches with a decent chance of winning. If we happen to be pushing for promotion, we will at least be desperate to win for positive reasons, rather than just avoiding the drop being the drive. |

When you back under someone in that way you apply virtuall no force to tip someone on thei head as they are in the air....... |

Are you seriously suggesting that Bednarek jumped over Martinelli? That's quite an Olympic high jump feat. Martinelli looked before backing under Bednarek in time-honoured centre-forward fashion. The fact that players are more athletic and can jump higher than 'the good old days' only makes the offence of backing in/under more dangerous. Could easily have been a broken neck. If Bednarek had the time to put his hand out, broken collar bone/wrist/dislocated shoulder take your pick. |

Opinion needed on the foul that resulted in Bednarek needing to be substituted. Causing someone to fall like that at a lineout in rugby is a straight red card as it is so dangerous. He looked before backing in, it was clearly deliberate. Football? |
| News Comment | Spanish Club In Negotiations For Southampton Midfielder at 16:50:52
OR has been superb for us. I always rated him over Victor, as he had so much more to his game. We all rate him for breaking up play etc, but it is his availability for an out ball at any time for the defence that makes him a cut above, along with knowing where the ball is going to go next before he receives it. As others have said, just pace lets him down, otherwise he would have been a 'big 6' player. |
| News Comment | Oriol Romeu Happy At Southampton As Contract Talks Loom at 11:24:50
IMO the best defensive midfielder we have had in a very long time. Always makes himself available for an outball from the defenders, always knows where the ball is going to go before it reaches him (like Bally) and is a very accurate/sympathetic passer. Wanyama might have been better in the tackle, but couldn't pass for toffee and his touch was poor. Hojberg might have been a better box to box player but his touch was never as assured as Ori and passes often went astray. Spider not as strong at holding off players. Only thing he lacks is pace, if he did have more pace he would have been at one of the big 6 clubs. Perfect for us. |
| News Comment | Mind The Gap ! Saints V City Highlights The Huge Difference Between Premier League Have And Have Not at 11:09:09
We have been 'also-rans' for many years now, along with the likes of Palace, West Ham and Burnley. As you say nick, we need to cast off the big 6/7 and start again with a new PL. Trouble is, that will see a load of owners/'investors' pull out of clubs and the Sky etc money will fall off a cliff. Then some of the also rans will go out of business...........not what the fans wished for. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Wolverhampton Wanderers The Verdict at 10:37:26
Few people have made much of the fact that the ref was refereeing only his second PL match and Wolves players really targetted him. Was it a pen? Possibly, but after 2 1/2 minutes of VAR scrutiny, a clear error by the ref? Likewise the Romeu pen call. Seen them given, but should it be overturned as a clear error? No and no! |
| News Comment | A Rough Guide To Wolverhampton Wanderers at 11:57:38
It is indeed a grim away day. We went very early last time and couldn't get in any pubs at all except the nominated Premier Inn, even the real ale pubs had doormen. The Premier Inn is very ordinary too. Instead of travelling by train this weekend we are driving and not bothering with more than a couple of pints. Been there a few times for gigs and thought it would be a good day out........ |
| News Comment | Happy Birthday Mike Channon at 15:45:10
He was always quick, but what made him especially effective at the Dell was the fact that he could sprint to the dead ball line and stop before smashing into the concrete wall, whilst defenders daren't take it that close............or at least that was the memory of a small lad from those days. |
| News Comment | Some Saints Fans Need To Forget The Last Three Months And Enjoy Sunday at 10:51:34
I think fans were entitled to feel down about Monday's performance (I did) - it was abysmal. Most of them (and me) are gradually building up excitement for Sunday Nick. One thing you have forgotten to mention is that staying in the PL is a fantastic achievement for any club of our size. The big 6, Everton and now I suppose Leicester have no threat of relegation. That leaves 14 teams to avoid the 3 relegation spots. That's pretty tight, especially after a few seasons. Yet we have managed it for 8 seasons and plenty of other, better backed have not. I live in Nottingham and Forest have had backers that have put much more money into their club than ours (even Markus). Yet, somehow Forest have languished in the Championship for 20 years. Staying in the PL for 8 years alone is a mighty achievement. |
| News Comment | Southampton At West Browmwich Albion The Verdict at 09:56:39
Two things. 1. It says a lot when the two players who IMO deserved the highest 'ratings' were our centre backs and we lost 3-0. 2. My son stating, "We must be the most inconsistent team in the PL." Prompting the question, which team will show up on Sunday? |
| News Comment | Saints At Bournemouth The Verdict at 19:53:16
I don't know if JWP was injured, but Pied was left exposed by him in the first half. I thought bringing on Redmond was a tactical change that gave Pied more support and allowed us to move forward more quickly, both of which certainly helped our second half performance. The last three games have 'felt' much more like Saints performances of the Poch and Koeman eras than the last season and a bit. What I have really missed is giving the 'big' 6 a scare every time we meet them and Wednesday was definately back to that . Squad management has been clever. Hjoberg was superb last Saturday, Davis rested on Wednesday, Romeu coming back from a game off and Lemina working back to full fitness. Yesterday Hjoberg was rested and Romeu and Davis did the really hard graft in central midfield. Lots of games coming up in the next few weeks and Pellegrino is setting them up to be as fresh as possible. |
