Arsenal lost their first 3 games 2 years ago and ended up 2nd..
On a serious note, I feel sorry for the players because of how hamstrung they have been with the set up. I don’t mind playing out from the back or vertical ticka tacka but we have to have an outlet up the middle. These first 3 games, Armstrong and Diaz have had little service but have been out wide, isolated. Smallbone and Aribo have no outlet through the middle as a result so we have no focal point to our attack and effectively no plan of attack. In the same way with no centre forward to aim for the keeper can’t play the occasional longer pass over the top to keep the oppo guessing.
So Martin has to go back to 4-3-3 and I like the idea of shifting Sugar in to midfield so he can cover for the marauding KWP at right back too. Bring in Taylor at left back and Fernandes on the other side of Downes. Then I think whoever plays as the front 3 will have more service and impact. Dibling Archer and Cornet would work for me. I do feel for Smallbone and Arma because of how Martin has set us up so far. |

Yeah firstly it is nonsense that he snubbed us, more likely the other way round judging by Martin’s comments and there is NO way it had any affect on how the Ramsdale transfer went, that’s just silly.. I’m over the moon with Rambo and as another has mentioned, I’m far more excited about the Downes, Fernandes, Dibling, Lallana combos rather than a trudgy has been. Forest want him cos they have a 9 foot striker, we’ve been trying to rid of ours for over a year now. If JWP was that good, why is it only the relegation candidates who showed interest? That was then but this is now! |

Assuming Fernandes is going to start in place of Aribo or Smallbone on Saturday as he came off early last night. And thus Archer and Dibling will both be on the bench again. I hope we don’t play without a central striker again on Saturday.
Taylor does look good but when will he be in instead of KWP at left back? Unless Sugawara misses out. I think we expected to lose Kyle and now we have too many to please. Will Manning go? |

RM has already confirmed we are overmanned in midfield and he doesn’t have what we need. Why the obsession with bringing every player back!? I just don’t understand it, it’s like an illness.. We’ve already dodged 2 with Ings and the Ox. We have Downes and Fernandes who are both ahead of him and it’s clear that Dibling and Lallana need to play when fit so with Smallbone, Aribo and big Les, I don’t see the point in wages for Ward Prowse, just makes no sense.

Think we need to do more than turn our attention elsewhere with 2 days left. It’s now panic stations as we are woefully short and Alcaraz going makes things a lot worse on the attack front. We are being beaten to every decent signing whether it be Ipswich or Brentford and we end up with those nobody else wants. Tremendous work Saints! Nearly bought another crocked player like the eternal ‘two weeks away’ Rod Stewart. SaintMark1976, I have the same question. There doesn’t seem to be any plan or any real clue of what or who they need to build a team which can survive at the top. The one obvious thing all fans have been saying for months is a keeper who can play with his feet. A few days of the window left and we’re still bereft of the goods. As for now showing interest in a Brazilian whose club doesn’t want to sell seems farcical. Again said to be a loan with option. Have we really spent all our money? Why is Charly suddenly going now when he might have helped us get something on Saturday? Why is Onuachu still here? Now we have Sugawara and KWP is now staying does this mean he plays left back all season when we already have about 9 left backs and keep buying them? Why did we not get rid of ABK long ago? I’m praying we don’t buy any more Man City youngsters, feels like we’ve paid for Haarland for them through buying their surplus youth. Lavia aside, a waste of money atm, Charles off, Edozie lacking, Lord Larios Lucan, Bazunu just too green, THB overpriced for a club like ours. Feels like we’re going to be the league’s laughingstock again. |

This report should have been written on Saturday evening, instead released 3 days after the game has gone. Why is it all other clubs show some urgency with match reports. Are we mirroring the team and RM ethics of being too late each week. Now I have to go through all the misery of Saturday again! But joking aside, how do you win games of football without a focal point to the attack and two strikers playing 50 yards apart. We had no way of scoring at home to a relegation rival. I’m totally staggered and confused by what I saw.
Is this RM having a dig at the club for refusing to buy Carvalho and ORiley? We could have had them for 55 million instead we will buy 4 average players for 60 and fill our squad once again with championship quality. Our owners are jokers without any humour. Can’t see where a goal comes from, let alone a win, because unlike the other teams in the league, we haven’t brought in the required quality to compete, let alone survive.
We lost the game because Aribo isn’t allowed to clear the ball into row z like the top 4 teams occasionally do. RM is turning into an arrogant clown with a Rylan beard or whatever his name is.. still stunned by what he did on Saturday. Don’t blame anyone for leaving early when that is what he has to offer us. Pathetic |

Aribo was magnificent in the first half at Newcastle so he may well start again. I agree it will probably either be the same starters as last week or maybe he will bring Archer in for Bednarek. It will be a shame if Sugawara doesn’t start as he was also really good at Newcastle. I think we need to win tomorrow or it could be a tough wait for the first one. |

We never really know what goes on behind the scenes. The fact he went out on loan to Juventus last season suggests that either he wanted to move on or there is an issue with him.
So it may well be that he wants to go.
Fantastic talent but every time he plays I’m scared we’re gonna be down to ten men. Getting yellow carded early in games has meant he’s had to tread carefully which impacts him and the team. Seems to be easily wound up and getting red carded in a friendly takes some doing.
It is a shame because, like someone else has mentioned, we looked much more likely to unlock the Newcastle defence when he came on and drove directly. They were scared of him. Bit of a conundrum but I get the feeling that he just doesn’t fit the style of play or the dressing room connection. The money along with the Mara funds are probably needed to balance what we’ve already purchased. |

Why was McCarthy given a new contract when he can’t play the way we want him to? This seems like utter stupidity. Yes not his fault but not the fans either who did the 650 mile round trip. The talk from the Newcastle fans in the pub before the game was about how they will high press our keeper because he’s poor with his feet and he duly obliged. Part of McCarthys issue is he is too laid back and lacks sharpness as a result.
That said we were fantastic first half. Aribo was like an ox and Downes and Sugawara also solid.
The geordies can moan all they want but they are the divisions worst at the dark arts, time wasting and throwing themselves to the ground at any opportunity, particularly Schar, so they just got a piece of their own medicine and whinged like children. It was a red, end of story.
My only criticism is that Alcaraz should have come on earlier as we looked more dangerous with him on the pitch and playing against 10 men you MUST move the ball quicker to stretch and tire them out. Our passing lacked the required intensity giving Newcastle an easier time than they should have had.
Many positives to take but we aren’t winning games in this league with this style of play using this keeper. |

When I’ve seen him, he’s looked impressive. I like the connection he already has with Diaz and the Diaz connection with Arma. They can probably interchange which will help the movement up front. Mara and Onuachu will both go if possible by the looks of it and Alcaraz too. Wondering if the Chelsea midfielder loan deal opens the door again for Charles to be part of a swap with O’Riley or someone like him because we still lack midfield creativity. Hopefully a new keeper by next week. |

Saint VW, Hasenhittl didn’t develop the stylish and gifted players. He liked workhorses and sideways football. They all played for a club going in the wrong direction and struggled to make long term impacts. Whereas Mane, Tadic, Wanyama, Van Dijk played in a team surrounded by quality, with a refreshing hunger for attacking football, coached under the likes of Adkins, Poch and Koeman.
