If Szmodics has another season like last year I'll be astonished. Looks like a total outlier.

If Cov can avoid starting a season without 8 straight defeats (I exaggerate) for the first time in yonks, they'll be challenging for sure.

'Top quality'

A mass-made pie kept warm for hours in a bag of plastic in some ginormous heating thing.

Nothing says 'top quality' quite like that.

In other news, all my posts on here are top quality.

Leeds are going to have a worse side than last season, and Farke I am deeply unsure about. Can't see them being champs.
Parker is a poor manager - he might get Burnley up, but they're used to playing very different football under Kompany.
Agree about Sheff U.

UK Beer. Shift to Lower ABV% .
at 12:15 29 Jul 2024

I think i read that lower alcohol is generally cheaper to brew as well, so cost of living has come into the equation too. No/Lo alcohol beers have slightly different processes that have been developing, so i’m not sure how equivocal it is, plus they’re likely to be selling in lower quantities (although probably not for much longer if trends continue), so that will affect costs.
I don’t really buy into the idea that lower alcohol means less taste though. I know online a lot of people are furious about it, but it doesn’t make much difference imo.

Well the stats would beg to differ. One thing that annoys me about Colback is the cheap yellows, but that’s been there throughout his entire career, from the start and every season. Some of them are infuriatingly boneheaded for a senior pro; not many are because he’s ‘off the pace’.

I do think we need another CM (at least), but to look at two pre-season games and say Colback is 'done' is laughable. Had an excellent end to the season. And they are friendlies. We really do need to stop making such huge judgements based on training games.

Couldn't disagree more, and suspect he'd be an excellent CB in a team like last season's team, set up correctly, with a strong CB to his right.
After a very dodgy start, his decision making was exceptional.
People said very similar things about Dickie, but then he goes to Bristol, plays in a 4, and is player of the season. Simply, in that era, all our CBs struggled in a 4, because of how the rest of the team was made up / set up.
I wouldn't have him back, mind!

Agree with almost all this but this narrative about Warburton needs to end. We were top 6 all season until late feb. It was absolutely worth a go at it. It failed, fine: but the real error was doubling down the following summer. Had we sold one or two then (and we could have done) things would have been far more manageable. De Wijs and Austin were gone in a year, Field was a great buy and we went too heavy on Johansen. I can’t believe the stick he gets for four freebies, only one of which was particularly expensive long term.

Games abroad
at 13:27 27 Jul 2024

I’m not sure how much i care about a prem game being played in America tbh.

I don’t agree with Khan on this, although he’s been a fine mayor, but I do see the argument that big clubs have long courted the foreign markets through sponsorship, ownership, signings and tours. Agree with the poster above that for me going to see a big euro game is about visiting the bernabeu or the nou camp or whatever, but equally, giving fans the opportunity of seeing a competitive game in their own country would be attractive to those fans, who spend a lot of money following their English team. The EPL has courted this as I’ve said. Khan is proffering an opinion, but he’s got zero influence over it.
Given the fuss on here at not being able to go to Spain to watch s couple of training matches, i thought more people might be happy about this prospect? (TIC)

Rubbish.

He had a difficult start / first 15 months, but after that was a very good player. Your memory is playing tricks on you there, he'd been imperious for some time before the head injury - well over a season. He'd been getting very good reviews well before that.

I agree with the sentiment, and even Ange was angry about the Australia match, which was insanity, but I don't really get the argument about how far away they are now. Few extra hours on a plane in first class not going to make any difference to players in pre-season.

As one door closes, a Celar door opens – Signing
at 20:31 19 Jul 2024

Mmmyeah, I'm not overly excited. But the reasons for that are amply explained in Clive's review there: we're so bad at this, I'm assuming it's another Adam Czerkas until I see otherwise.

For those proclaiming Armstrong and Willock's sideways moves as 'only for the money', witness player who would have been playing CL football fairly soon swapping that for a team that was 2 games away from playing in the third tier. Maybe we didn't tell him about the tax differences between here and Switzerland.

My other caveat is, and thanks to Spiresey for his superb analysis as usual, the defending in those clips looks basically non-existent. I remember when we signed Washington I watched his 15 goals he'd scored that season and at the back of my mind a little voice was saying 'y'know, about 12 of these the keeper should have saved and any championship keeper would definitely have saved them', before telling my brain to shut up so I could get back to killing it with beer. Slightly similar vibes on those clips.

HOWEVER, I am, despite all that, still hopeful, and best of luck to him, and hope he gets an early goal to give him some confidence.

PS - I reckon when Clive is 90 he'll still be upset we never signed Mendonca.

Agree, if true, this is a phenomenal deal imo.

Until he scores 20 goals in a couple of years and goes for £20m ;) but even then we'd get £4m. Very good.

Third kit...
at 12:23 19 Jul 2024

I like it, and love the crest being incorporated.

But then, honestly, I never understand visceral reactions against kits. I know nothing about fashion. I think my reactions to clothes go from 'I quite like that' to 'It's not quite for me', and very little either side of that!

Agree, nice idea, but can't see that happening at all. It's one thing being comfortable next to the touchline, where players can only come at you from one side and having the safety net of a nearby touchline, quite the other playing just in front of the back 4 with 360 degree danger.

Well we might have been.
But we came 4th and Burnley came... 2nd. Location may have played a part though, I suspect.
