Bantams to chicken out at the JCS against the Colchester Eagles 22:22 - Nov 15 with 3109 viewsdurham_exile

Tomorrow is the battle of the goalkeepers Sam Walker who is 6ft 6ins, (but we reckon he’s eight feet tall) and Matt Macey who is a more realistic 6ft 7ins tall.

Graham Alexander brings his Bantams into Town with a string of indifferent recent results and they will be looking to put things right at the JCS. Whilst the Super U’s fresh from their point at Barrow and handsome victory over Arsenal U21’s on Tuesday will be looking to build on that morale boosting victory.

I drove the 80 miles last weekend to Barrow and for 91 minutes thought that it would be a repeat of recent defeats at Holker Street but then brilliance from Thorn, Tovide and Taylor and we were level and taking a deserved point home.

DC lined up

Gordon
Taylor Macey
Hunt Flanagan Donnelly Iandolo
Woodyard McDonnell
Anderson Payne

Subs Egbo (for Hunt 36) Goodliffe Hopper Read Smith Thorn (for Anderson 79) Tovide (for Woodyard 70)

We started brightly and should have been 1-0 up early doors but Gordon couldn’t hit the side of a Renault Espace and the chance went begging. Then Barrow scored a decent volleyed goal and we all thought he we go (again). I am still unsure just how many of the faithful travelled. I reckon about 100 but I have seen differing figures.

But it was the same old fear factor, we played backwards and sideways passes, with Hunt, Flanagan and Gordon the worst offenders.

Hunt was injured and the excellent Egbo came on after 36 minutes. HT and it was still 1-0. The temperature was dropping and the makeshift stand which affords the most unbelievably appalling view with supports, floodlight pylons and advertising hoardings all playing their part in obscuring the view.

I preferred it when we were at the far end of the ground (where the Barrow Ultra racists stand).

Second half proceeded in similar vein until the 70th minute when Samson Tovide came on for Woodyard. At last, some attacking intent and Taylor had some support in the final third. Things improved still more when the pacy Thorn came on after 79 minutes for Anderson. Then we had real pace down the right flank and an equaliser looked possible.

When it came it was sublime a great move involving Thorn, great pace and strength from Tovide and an inviting cross for Lyle Taylor to sweep into the net on 92 minutes.
We deserved it and the timewasting from Barrow had backfired. If only the referee had been more accommodating to Samson but it seems he is not only a marked man by defenders but also the referees union.

Tuesday night I relied on Sky Sport + unlike the 4,265 who gave the JCS great atmosphere.

DC lined up

Smith
Egbo Donnelly Goodliffe Iandolo
Anderson Payne McDonnell Read
Hopper Thorn

Subs Harrison Chamberlain Flanagan (for Iandolo 46) Woodyard (for McDonnell 62) Taylor Sandah (for Anderson 62) Oliver Godziemski (for Payne 82)Rashaad Drysdale for Egbo 82)

Now this was a game that I really enjoyed. From the outset we were at the races. Arsenal youngsters weren’t allowed to dwell on the ball, we adopted a high press and committed bodies forward. This was surely the football that DC and NC were brought in to adopt for our club.

A flowing move with the excellent Thorn and near passes resulted in Hopper sweeping home after 16 minutes. Anderson scored a second just before half time and the imperious Egbo scored a magnificent third on 50 minutes. Egbo is every bit as good as Junior Tchamadeu and when he goes forward things happen. My only fear is that the vultures will be circling come January.

It was a comprehensive victory against a Premier League U21 side but we never let them play at all.

So, what happens tomorrow when the Bantams are in Town. DC will play a team more akin to the Barrow game. He will play Anderson and probably Gordon and start Flanagan. However, let’s be bold and imaginative and go with:

Macey

Egbo Donnelly Goodliffe Iandolo

Read Payne Woodyard

Thorn Tovide Taylor

Subs
Smith Flanagan Anderson Gordon McDonnell Sandah Hopper

I’m going for a 2-1 Colchester win with Taylor and Tovide on the scoresheet.

Weather 11 degrees Celsius light cloud with a gentle breeze.

Decent crowd possibly 5,500 (1000 from Bradford).

Enjoy the game.

Up the U’s

A game of very little penalty area excitement. Cannot give Cook a half chance, has he will undoubtedly score against the U’s ( How many times is that now ).
Credit for us to keep going with a 10 min extra time equaliser, to U’s MoM, McConnelly, who silently went around the hole clearing up play.
Sadly the U’s have to sub the club captain to get a equaliser !
Finished with two wide and two down the middle, what chance of that for the forthcoming fixtures.

Poll: No half measure either 1 or 2 ?

Why, because supporters (I'm a supporter btw, not a fan) disagree with you?

Sorry you feel that way - I've offered arguments to debate, you've chosen not to. The U'sual has always been a broad church and I hope it remains so, but we don't really take well to personal insults, we've had our fair share of those in the past. I don't claim any specific knowledge of the game other than 50+ years of following the U's.

I think it’s best to ignore Frankie. He’s obviously a binner or shrimp. He’s a wanchor

And now I'm wondering whether I ate some some of your Fish in a BHS store.

Venues and locations needed Wessex.

2+ years at Colchester BHS back in the day (the big store near Cheap Jacks). I'm not 100% certain on the years, but broadly about '77 to '80 I reckon. Mostly Saturday work, but full time during the summer holidays. I really enjoyed it too, and like to think I was pretty good at it (at least no one died that I'm aware of )

Did anyone notice that Sam Walker still couldn’t catch a cold! Still punching and flapping at anything but easiest of balls.

Accepting that Lyle probably hurdled the defender and hence no contact, but because matey didn’t get the ball, David Gregory was adamant that it should have been a pen because he impeded Lyle by making him jump out of the way lto avoid a broken ankle, thereby impeding him from being able to continue with play.

VAR would have spent all night looking at that!

Thanks Wessex

I have definitely eaten at BHS during that period.

I lived in Braintree from 74-81.
And although spent time in Andover during that period too BHS was on the radar.

It really is a small world.

Indeed, we'd probably still be playing now.

I haven't seen it back post-match but I'll be honest, even in avoiding the lunge I thought Taylor was caught. Immaterial now, but in a way I'm more annoyed about the blatant pull back of Taylor first half, right in front of the linesman, which didn't even get a yellow card. Yellow cards don't win games, but an early one does change the mindset of a defence.

As usual, I was in the East Stand today. I thought we put on a really good display. If we can reach that level consistently, the wins will come, make no mistake. After the game, DC spoke about how hard it is to come back from going a goal down. Of course he's right, so my only criticism would be why not start with Tovide and Edwards? Get ahead in the game and then take them off if they really can't manage 90 minutes.

Precisely!!
Offensive first, defensive later if necessary.
Two strikers minimum at home. Attack and challenge opposition teams.....stop being predictable!

I also believe the worm will turn!

100% you have to give them credit for scoring and the effort to keep going….. but this is really nothing more than papering over the cracks… robbing Peter to pay Paul. The last 2 games have been late equalisers. Until we have a new set up we will not get any better in reality….

The Chuckle brothers live for another pay check …. But this means we are subject to non progressive football by a couple of PE teachers….

Credit for keeping going.. grinding it out… but in reality what are we celebrating

Change the record mate. Everyone is bored with reading the same old stuff from you every match. If you fancy coming up with something constructive, rather than childish jibes, then you might get a better response.

I think people are being harsh on franksic1988.

He may repeat his negativity but it is a forum with a lot of freedom to comment with no censorship.

Personally at this moment in time I feel DC is getting away with a lot. He speaks a good game and claps the fans and people give the benefit that he is turning the situation around. If this was Garner or Etherington the reaction would be completely different.

DC constantly changes the starting XI and clearly feels he has to play players he has signed. Some of his formations have staggered me and his insistence on players out of position annoys me.

Despite moan above I want DC to be given more time/ opportunity to improve things

What you're saying is constructive and your opinion, one that is probably shared by many others, and opens up a debate. Calling Danny and Nicky the Chuckle Brothers have referring to them as PE teachers is both pointless and childish. It's not even like it's remotely amusing either.
