First trip to Bury 17:24 - Mar 28 with 12735 viewsJames1980

On Tuesday I will be making my first trip to Bury to cheer on Dale from the away end. Any top tips to make my trip as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Both practical and amusing tips are expected.

Don't try to get a train to bury.

Bring something that can swat away batteries and golf balls.

Poll: What is it to be then?

There will be more atmosphere in the Cemetery behind the stadium I imagine!

If Dale lose to Shrewsbury on Friday I can see it being a terrible crowd too. A shame that your first derby experience will be such a flat one!

Plan to get a tram and bus. I could bring my railway dispatchers bat for the other purpose

if you have any modicum of fitness you can walk from the tram.

have a pre match pint at Trackside in the centre of the town and admire the steam trains of yesteryear.

25 minute walk following the crowd ( down Manchester road ) to Giggle.

Once past the advertising signs and advanced building works for the new aparthotel going up you will have made it.

Gigg is on the left hidden by houses ( its ramshackled these days ) looking as unkept as the pot holed carpark.

You might not be able to get a pint pre match they are changing the social club to an all singing / dancing real ale / restaurant destination pub so people will flock there on nights when there is no football on as the whole of Manchester is closing once open.

Once inside the ground the Cemmy end is ok for behind the goal experience but the dreadful Manchester road end needs bulldozing but that might not happen until the Taylor Wimpey signs go up.

The game will probably be turgid and close. 0-0 is the bet of the night but the odd goal could settle it either way - hopeful we turn up and they don't like previous encounters recently.

We're in the Manchester Road End this year, apparently.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

The town really isn’t that big James. The atmosphere will be flat, so don’t worry about trouble. It’s a very straight forward walk to the ground along the Manchester Road.

He's not going in the home end.

Have I missed something? Gigg Lane? I thought the new ground was going to be ready by now.

Not one for such conversations usually and we may not be the most vociferous usually, but the support at away games recently has been as good as I can remember.

I am getting an overnight bus back to London so perhaps a soporific affair might be good to promote falling asleep on the way back. Say we score early on and shut up shop for 80 odd minutes

I get the impression the fixture isn't league 1's answer to River Plate v Boca

Bottom versus next-to-bottom James

Might be L1's answer to Pyongyang City Sports Club v Rimyongsu Sports Club (although best leave any mention of rim out of it)

I haven’t been in that end since Kevin Townson put the ball in the Bury net and Le Fondler was spotted prancing around as Father Christmas.

Tuesday promises to be quite a surreal atmosphere. I don’t think I’ve been to a match before where both teams are as good as down.

We've been in that end in 2008/09 & 2009/10 since then.

I think Le Fondler was prancing around as Father Christmas at the league game a month later. Townson's goal was in the FA Cup tie.

Did you go to Chesterfield in the 2011/12 relegation season? Bizarrely, there was quite a good, defiant atmosphere in the Dale end that day.

We lost 2-1 and got relegated, with Chesterfield fans taunting us with "Going Down" chants.

They were relegated a week later!

Anyway, for your entertainment:

Blimey! I’m glad video quality has improved since then! I think that was my first season watching us, and only sporadically, so games blend into one. Those two Bury games must’ve been my first ever away games and Fondles’ Christmas crew is one of my most endearing early Dale memories!

Due to other commitments I didn’t go to many games in the 11/12 season thankfully!
