In Football terms, stadium size and support base, yes. Not in sociological terms, which I couldn't give a s**t about, to be honest. If the Old firm entered the FA Cup in the first round, they'd never make it to the third.

Silly isn't it? They're both huge clubs with Worldwide fanbases. Ally that to PL riches and they could easily be a force. Whether the rest of the game would want the shite that goes hand in hand with them in the Prem is another matter.

Worldwide? Come on now United, Liverpool, Madrid and Barca have a worldwide fanbase. Old firm have what, Scotland and respective areas of Ireland? Maybe a pocket of North America in Boston, but that is nothing compared to Madrid and Barcia in the hispanic areas, and Liverpool (Fenway) and United on the eastern seaboard.

I'm no Celtic fan, I don't give a monkeys about Scottish football, but it's worth noting that when they got to the final of the Europa League (in the noughties, I think) they took 80k+ fans, of which about 20k would've had tickets. To suggest that anyone in England except Man U, Liverpool and possibly Arsenal has support numbering anywhere near that of Celtic is disingenuous. On a separate point, all clubs are constantly trying to tap into global markets, particularly the US; Celtic would be able to tap into a huge Irish-American market, most of which aren't currently interested as only 4 games a season have any relevance or are likely to be competitive. The potential revenue streams are enormous. Celtic would undoubtedly be competitive at the top end of the PL.

That'll be the effect of the PL's global reach. To put it into context, we have 900k Twitter followers. Alas, we do not have more fans than Celtic.

A large % of the spectacting audience in the United States are hispanic, and thus Madrid and Barca are kings. Soccer isn't touching the traditional big 4 outside of this demographic. 'The irish-american' market is concentrated in New England, e.g Boston and north from there. Liverpool are also massive in this market, due to the Fenway (Red Sox baseball) connection. Celtic don't register in the USA anymore than the Cleveland Browns register in the United Kingdom.

Fair point, but what I'm suggesting is that they might if they were in the PL. The SPL is an irrelevance outside Scotland.

OK, but social media also has a global reach, so surely this incredible fanbase and support all around the world would be reflected in those numbers? Surely if the size of their support is over inflated, compared to the league they play in, then they would be comparable? Galatasaray have 8m followers, what global reach does the Turkish league have?
| |
Celtic in the Premier League? on 14:08 - Feb 23 with 1240 views | Evanski | You could argue that Galatasaray have more global exposure as they tend to last longer in the CL than Celtic, perhaps because their league is far more competitive than the SPL. That and the fact that Turkey's population is over 10x that of Scotland, plus a huge Turkish ex-pat community all over the world. 8m is pretty impressive though, I'm surprised.

Aye, why use a global metric when we can just use old yarns of when Jock Stein took the Lisbon Lions to glory in 1967
| |
Celtic in the Premier League? on 14:31 - Feb 23 with 1212 views | Evanski | Well what is beyond dispute is that Celtic average attendances of around 60k per game despite the dross that they face week in, week out. If they were welcoming the likes of Man U et al to Celtic Park every other week it's reasonable to assume that they could expand and still fill the place.
