The Modern Football Fan - What went wrong
at 16:12 24 Sep 2024

This is it. I'm aware of the politics, but surely there's a club closer to home they can wave their tiny Union Jacks?

They were also quite friendly which was also very strange. To be fair, I was just minding my own business eating carrot sticks and hummus whilst reading the G2 film and music supplement.

Not strictly on the topic of the 'modern football fan'...

I was on my way back from Sheffield a few weeks ago and at Doncaster I was joined by a load of Chelsea fans commuting down for a game. None of them were from London, all Yorkshire men. They were also talking about going to watch Rangers (the Glasgow variety) I am aware of this 'Blues Brothers' connection, but what I find strange is that they were from Doncaster. How do you end up supporting Chelsea?! They weren't even young, probably 50+.

Most people I know and have met from Yorkshire are proud of where they're from and I could never imagine them supporting a London football club.

The typical modern football fan - constant crisis, ‘hot takes’ and limbs. In answer to the question what went wrong - social media.

Absolutely nothing appealing about modern football in the top flight and nothing appealing about the fan experience. Anyway, the people on this forum aren’t the target audience and we thankfully support an unfashionable club.

There are other types of modern football fans, those that have more sophisticated tastes and interests. There are forums and magazines that cater for those people and this place is a great example of that - it’s sits perfectly between the blizzard, WSC and Mundial.

What you’ve identified is the eternal problem with most of our players of the last few seasons. Technical ability devoid of application. Most analysis leans towards the ‘if they just did a bit more of this’ or ‘they played here instead of there’…etc. Better to have a player who knows where he needs to be and lacks a bit of technical ability than someone who has the ability but does nothing with it.

The crucial difference with Madsen and players like him is they go missing in games far too often. Saito and Dembele can and will likely improve and be greater assets to the team. I just don’t see it with Madsen. We don’t need him, he need a Colback style player. That’s the bottom line. Unless of course we just want to watch a ‘languid’ player all season?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. We can’t afford to have a player like him in this team on the off chance he does what he did against Luton. He’ll play badly more than he’ll play well.

But it’s okay, because he plays with a ‘languid’ style and he needs more time to acclimatise to Championship football.

Aside from LFW my two favourite QPR related websites are:

'QPR Land' - It's the digital version of an obsessed amateur detectives bedroom.

&

The history section of the QPR report message board:

Very different vibe to the contemporary corners of the internet.

And let's not forget that the views expressed are set against VERY low standards that have been set by the club and players over the past few seasons.

So when people quote directly from LFW glossary - 'x player needs time' - when clearly x player is displaying the same issue as their predecessor, I think people can be forgiven for their criticism. If anything, it is the rational position to take. Maybe Celar is an upgrade on Dykes? Maybe Madsen is 'languid'? Maybe Marti picked the strongest 11 available to him? Maybe I should consider all the nuance even if the outcome is the same?

Agree and disagree...the FT score is the only stat that counts in a cup competition. There's none of this 'we go again'.

However, over the course of season, if used well, stats can really help you. Small margins, big gains and all that.

The problem I have with stats is they don't always follow how we as fans watch the game, and an over reliance can stifle instinctive more entraining style of play.

Anyway, QPR lost in the cup and we're all complaining about the same things we complain about every season. It's reassuring given the current climate of uncertainty.

My point is more about the role they play than their individual merits. The level we're at and the quality of players we have means we can't afford to carry players who will go missing in games. My fear is Dozzell has returned to Loftus Road in disguise.

To be fair though, Dozzell has set the bar incredibly low. Madsen only has 84 games to score 2 goals in order to beat Dozzell's contribution. He better hurry up!

Madsen is from the same school of lethargy as Dozzell. They dream of being the Championships answer to Ozil and would love to pioneer the 'false 10' in the EFL. You will see the occasional flash of brilliance (never consistently) , but it will never be against Palace in the cup. Never.

It looks like he picks the ball up with his back to goal, turns and pokes it in, it’s actually pretty decent considering the chaos, really not a bad bit of composure.

QPR only discussion - English fans vs American fans
at 18:27 9 Sep 2024

Nothing compares to watching QPR live. Live football IMO is always better than on the telly. TV coverage is usually awful, pundits, adverts, no atmosphere etc. None of the fancy analysis, graphs, charts, replays from multiple angles, half time commentary could ever make staying at home a preferred option. Rain or shine, I want to be at Loftus Road. It’s an integral part of my love for QPR. It’s part of the identity of the club.

But…being able to attend games doesn’t make me anymore of fan. If you love Rangers that’s all good, doesn’t matter where you are in the world or how you watch the game. Everyone has different circumstances and I’m sure if we could we’d all love to watch the R’s at Loftus Road. The buzz you get from the collective joy of celebrating a goal can’t be replicated by TV. Dunne’s winner last season is a great example, you had to be there!
