Friday Choonage……

It's not too late.

I've caught a few bands just in time. I saw Tom Petty's last live gig in the UK before he died and Jimi Hendrix's:

Blimey. That is surprising. Even I've seen them (at Milton Keynes Bowl with The Stranglers more than 30 years ago) and I'm not a big pop/rock fan.

They've mellowed with age but I like their new drummer, Cherisse Osei. She injects a lot of energy into an ageing band and even won a best live drummer award.

There is a difference.

McCarthy made one sub appearance in a friendly against the USA in 2018. Southgate was having a look at just about any English goalkeeper in the Premier League. He obviously didn't like what he saw in those few minutes because he never played again.

Forster won 6 caps under both Hodgson and Southgate. He was in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers squad, the Euro 2016 squad and, more recently, in the squad for the Euro 2024 qualifiers. He was on the bench in nearly 40 England games, mostly at the time when Joe Hart was the undisputed first choice. He's also played in 30 Champions League games for Spurs and Celtic, the last one being a 0-0 draw against AC Milan last year.

Forster was always a better goalkeeper than McCarthy and the stats clearly show that.

Pub league standard.

Somehow, we've managed to collect some of the worst professional goalkeepers not only in Great Britain and Ireland, but also in Europe. That's quite an achievement for a Premier League club. In fact, it's probably never been done by any other club before, except Saints the last time we were in the Premier League.

He certainly led by example. He showed them the level they need to sink to.

It reminds me of the Stevie Smith poem, Not Waving but Drowning:

I was much further out than you thought
And not waving but drowning

I understand what you're saying, Nick, and I agree that's he's probably doing his best, but the nicer we are, the longer he stays. He's made more than enough money now to retire a lot more comfortably than the rest of us. Maybe he could play somewhere more his level, like Eastleigh, if he wants to continue playing.

The time has come for the fans to make it very clear to the club something that they don't seem to know: we urgently need a new goalkeeper or we're going to be relegated again. Your front page articles get quite a lot of coverage, Nick, so perhaps you could headline the next one, "Why we need a new goalkeeper now." It might help and it's better to do it now than halfway through the season, when it will be too late.

The best we looked in pre-season was when Dibling and Amo-Ameyaw were on the pitch together. They combine together so well.

Song - McCarthy

We've got the worst goalie in the land
We've got the worst goalie in the land
We've got the worst goalie in the land
And that's why we're going down

This should be sung in our remaining pre-season games until Russell Martin finally gets the message. Of course, it won't be and Russell Martin will remain totally oblivious to the need for a new goalkeeper.

Why he can't see it, when everyone else can, I don't know.

Stick him in goal. He's got to be better than McCarthy.

That's nothing. Pompey took 600 to MK Dons, which will be enough for them to start boasting all over the internet that they took thousands there.

Is Matt O'Riley really that good?

I think we all agree that a new goalkeeper has to be our No.1 priority in this transfer window (well, at least I do).

Pat, you have to be at least as good as Vestergaard to play regularly for Denmark. Maybe O'Riley isn't up to that standard. He is well behind Højbjerg (81 caps) in the central midfield pecking order, like Ross Stewart is well behind Che Adams in the pecking order for Scotland.

I've never seen O'Riley play, so he may be absolutely brilliant, for all I know. Let's hope he is if he's going to be our record signing.

Top 3 worst record transfer signings by Saints
at 12:23 30 Jul 2024

We had some very good ones under Bates and McMenemy, like Ron Davies, Kevin Keegan and Dave Watson.

Wasn't Perry Groves our record signing under Branfoot? That didn't go well.

Frank Warren wants it at St Mary's, but if he wants to fill it for Ryan Garner and Royston Barney-Smith, he needs to wait another couple of years. It's too soon in their careers. Of course, the other option is to have Mark Chamberlain on the card as well. In fact, that may well be what he's thinking, but I'm not sure the police would allow that to happen, as there would be more fighting in the crowd than in the ring. If he added Billam-Smith as well, he'd be sure to sell out St Mary's. Lewis "The Saint" Edmondson should be part of this too.

What a night that would be.

What is most likely to happen? A Mark Chamberlain world title fight, with Ryan Garner and Royston Barney-Smith on the card, at Fratton Park or St Mary's.

Paying De Gea £10 million for 2 years, if he agrees to it, would be well worth it, when you consider how much we've paid for Bazunu (including transfer fee) and McCarthy, and he's the only one of those three who will keep us up, which is worth more than £100 million to the Club.

If money is his main concern, which is understandable as he's at the end of his career, I'm surprised he hasn't gone to Saudi.

This fight definitely isn't going the distance (he says) So, it definitely is. What do I know?

Good fight though.

But, that's Joe Joyce's career over.
