| Forum Reply | Manning in central midfield at 11:30 1 Aug 2024
Manning is left-footed, he covered the left side trying to cover for Alcarez and leaving the left hand side exposed because he had to cover too much ground in a position he was unfamiliar with. Rotten on Manning, if you ask me, and asking him to do way too much that virtually nobody could do. That's a Martin experiment that was frankly, mindless - there was not a chance in Hell that it was going to work but Oxford worked it out easily. And Martin went back to a sensible formation in the second half. [Post edited 1 Aug 11:32]

Only a friendly! but they must be ashamed of the performance, there aren't any highlights of the match up yet only gallery pictures! Martin's reaction said it all. |

Alcarez was playing a forward role and Manning was playing on the left hand side of midfield. Alcarez was nowhere near the defence. |

Exactly, Charlie Taylor was left floundering, horribly exposed and didn't stand an earthly. If Oxford can do it, you can bet your bottom dollar all the other teams in the Prem can. |

The question is: How how terrible can we be with a back three, moving Manning into the left mid and exposing our left flank as badly as we did last year? |

Second half yawn fest. No sign of Karl 'Offers' Peters or the invisible Scotsman. |

I want my £5 back. Utter rubbish. McCarthy absolutely rubbish. Defence rubbish. Couldn't score in a house of ill repute. Let's hope for a better second half LOL. |

Lis made a good front post stop early on and then a good punch from a corner. He didn't have an opportunity to catch anything. Doesn't look mightily assured on the ball but played one good pass over the top in the second half. But is he really much worse than the other three keepers we've got? Nevertheless, we definitely need a class Premiership goalie - at the moment we haven't got one. |

First half thought Dibling and Sam Amo played well and looked promising. Lis looked OK overall as back -up. Charles looked reasonable in the middle. Charley flattered to deceive - looks like he needs a lot more match time. Second half: Sulemana showed he could be a handful for any defence in the Prem ( with such an electric turn of pace) if we can integrate him effectively. Indeed the forward line of Sulemana, Armstrong and Stewart ( if he can actually get some injury free match time) could help keep us in the Prem. Smallbone came on displaying a more physical version so might fit nicely with Downes in the centre of the midfield. Boot looked pretty good at centre back. Sugawara is class and will be a Saints favourite this year. [Post edited 24 Jul 12:04]

Yes, probably 5 winnable games out of the first nine. If we've got a reasonable squad, I think the fixtures are pretty kind to us and so having played a good mix of quality, we should know by the end of October how the remainder of the season's going to pan out. I'm not looking forward to the potential thumpings we might get this season. I suppose at least Ralph prepared us for that. As long as it doesn't get into double figures!! [Post edited 24 Jul 9:39]

No reason to say that Saints won't finish 20th - with the present squad that looks odds on - but let's wait until the first match and compare squads. With 3 weeks to go the Management still need to do a vast amount of work in making a squad fit to compete in the Premier League. |

Absolutely, appreciate your excellent retort Nick. The mandarin yellow shirts of the late 60's were the best. One can only dream. Denis Hollywood in mandarin yellow taking a free kick outside the penalty area in the pouring rain. Probably against Coventry. Pure poetry! [Post edited 17 Jul 14:43]

Hurray, our traditional home kit back - I've been waiting a long time for this. And a traditional yellow away shirt - albeit a different shade. With Flynn signed as well - all this surely augurs well for the new season? How can a third of people not like it - must be fair weather supporters? [Post edited 17 Jul 9:34]

Looks an excellent player and a good replacement for KWP. A direct player, making good crosses and taking an excellent goal attempting free kick. Hopefully we'll see more of this type of quality player in the next month. [Post edited 14 Jul 16:54]

You're right of course Nick , that we have to wait and see but the whole point of the comment is that things, to me, don't look particularly promising at this moment ( although I don't really expect anything else). I don't want to be the harbinger of doom; I'm saying what it looks like at the moment to me - principally, I guess for the disappointment to come. For me that's putting things in perspective. It is all speculation at the moment but that's what most of the forum's about and the discussion that follows. If something positive happens I'll be the first to post it. Is Nathan Woods, a Swansea player, a move in the right direction? He looks OK on YouTube but nothing outstanding and we know that mediocre players can look fairly good on YouTube. But could he play in the Prem and does that mean Bednarek is going? All intriguing speculation presently. I really don't think one experienced player going to do it Nick - we need several. As far as I can see we need better players to cover in most areas of the park. From the initial signs I doubt whether that's going to happen. A horribly tough time for the Saints trying to build a team for the Premiership but while there's time , there's hope. We march on regardless. As long as we have the same spirit and fight that Luton had last year - then I'll be happy. Anything better is a huge fillip and a bonus. [Post edited 17 Jun 10:20]
