Club Captain Jack Stephens 23:13 - Aug 1 with 1082 viewsSaintNick

Reading the Daily Echo report on today's open training session and they referred to Jack Stephens as "Club Captain"

Rather than Captain and there is a distinction, wasn't he just plainly the Captain last season, can we expect a new Captain with Jack being moved sideways to the role of Club Captain, usually filled by a senior professional no longer a regular.

Russell Martin has already spoken of the leadership qualities of both Flynn Downes and Taylor Harwood Bellis.

Always feel clubs make a mistake when they do that, undermines the role as who is the leader in the player group when they are not in a match - the club captain or the captain? And then by extension undermines the leadership of the captain during games as if the club captain comes on who is in charge?
Football is a brutal game where players get released, sold and loaned out. Seems silly to shy away from being direct on this and just making someone who will actually play 90% of the games the captain.

Can see the logic of both being captain, Flynn obviously a few years older and a longer working relationship with RM but THB is a central defender and this always feels a good place for a captain to marshal everyone from especially in a season where we are at risk of conceding a lot of goals.

The Club Captain is usually more responsible for the squad in general off the pitch and the Captain on it

But then off the pitch how much do you respect the guy who in his prime years is not making it into the team and on the pitch how much do you respect the guy who you spend being a contemporary with rather than your leader for most of the week in all the training sessions?

Just saying it creates unnecessary undermining of the system, would rather just see captain change!

My money is on Flyn Downes becoming captain. Hopefully he would become the leader we desperately need on the pitch.

Most teams run a dual Captain system, there doesnt appear to be any crossover, issues, in fact the opposite, you have an elder statesman who is more the players representative and the leader on the field who is the managers

Alex McCarthy was our team captain at Oxord.

It doesn't look like we're getting a new goalie does it? Which is madness as we basically have the same options as we did for the Championship season just with one of them out injured for the season...

Teams used to have one coach on the sideline. Now there is an army for every facet of the game.
I suggest a series of Captains depending on leadership skills in each area.
Maybe captains for training, a captain when they are on the team bus, a captain for leisure activities such as ping pong, a captain for the canteen at lunchtime etc.
during the match maybe all of them could have a period of the game when they will be captain. so then all of them get a moment to lead and be in charge.
Totally inclusive and progressive. Every player gets to feel valued and can only benefit their mental health.
Actually we should add a Captain of team mental health....

He certainly led by example. He showed them the level they need to sink to.

It reminds me of the Stevie Smith poem, Not Waving but Drowning:

I was much further out than you thought
And not waving but drowning

Are you sure it is most teams, only team I can see that did it in the premier league last season was Newcastle?
How can you be sure that there are no crossover issues?

I had high hopes for Lis but it didn’t sound like he made much of an impression when he played in a recent friendly.

You cannot reason a person out of something they were not reasoned into.

Well, I think he is back off to Turkey which frees up a goalkeeping space......

Pub league standard.

Somehow, we've managed to collect some of the worst professional goalkeepers not only in Great Britain and Ireland, but also in Europe. That's quite an achievement for a Premier League club. In fact, it's probably never been done by any other club before, except Saints the last time we were in the Premier League.
