I thought moneyball was the strategy of signing statistically good players, but not really spectacular. So assembling a team of players that tick the boxes in terms of stats, but not really anyone glamourous.
Yeah I really liked them. Growing up in the countryside in South Africa in the 80's, it was virtually impossible to get access to music like this. I had a friend whom I saw once or twice a year who lived near Cape Town and had access to record stores that sold imported LPs and cassettes. He introduced me to all sorts of weird and wonderful music.
I saw Kirk Brandon live in Amsterdam as support act for The Mission in, I think, 2001.
Its for sale from the club shop, but somehow I missed the launch. The video on the club youtube channel was before the Leeds game and said it would be used in the Leeds game. Missed that also.
I'm guessing that if that was indeed used against Leeds, the actual "on-field" look of it is not as bad as the images on the web.
I think with some proper coaching he can be a useful player. His decision making has been poor, for me.
Many fluent attacks upfield he seemed to slow it down by just hanging on to it with people streaming forward into good positions. And then when he had to slow it down and wait for support, he snapped at it or tried a shot from impossible angles.
His first touch though has let him down on many occasions. Not sure how much that can still be improved, I guess a lot of practice will help.
I would quite literally watch anything on TV if its sports. Rugby union, cycling, golf, field hockey, athletics, cricket, darts, tennis, you name it.
Since moving to NL I had to learn to appreciate sports like ice skating and field hockey which, in my native South Africa, was not popular or not even present (skating), but huge in NL.
There was a time I watch quite a bit of US baseball because it was on the telly right about the time I was cooking dinner.
Well that's the model, isn't it? Not every single player you develop will be a success, so you have to try and some will be misses.
Friend of mine (who played international football, two world cups to his name) was later technical director at a well known top flight Dutch club. He told me they only have to sell a player on for decent money every 3-5 years and that's enough. Its the entire business model. They have a specific area where they recruit and if they hit gold on average once in 4 years, they are all set.
I like Armstrong for his energy and commitment. Seems like a nice bloke who are genuinely committed. But he was one of the most frustrating players to watch at times. He always seemed to slow the game down just when you think a quick action was needed and vice versa. Like those shots from impossible angles that he seems to rush when you think it would be better to pull back for an onrushing Jason Dozzell or at least just check back and hold it up waiting for the support.
I noticed that the teams we beat in the last 3 games, PNE, Leeds and Cov, finished 22, 23 and 24 in the form guide for last 6 games of the season. Because of us, I like to think
Does anyone have stats for how many set-piece goals we scored/conceded in the last 10 games or so? For me that has been one of the most outstanding transformations of this team.
