Soton beer festival
at 20:02 24 Jun 2017

I went today, having gone for a number of years to the Guildhall. I think the only positive thing I can say about the change of venue is that there was easier access to the toilets and more of them.

The beer was not as good (not the fault of SFC), you could not take your own food in and so were forced pretty much to buy "half time food" if you were so inclined, the whole atmosphere was lost (you were under the Kingsland stand) as you were spread out over a long stretch.

Would prefer another venue or to go back the Guildhall.

I think the 4-0 FA Cup win over Spurs was on TV?

Spurs (h) - Moved for TV (or Europa)

Interesting that Sky have chosen every game for Man City and Chelsea for April and a number of games between the current top 8, but not a single Saints game?! Perhaps we have a boring fixture list for April, or just the usual lack of recognition that we will be in the mix when it really matters?

A statistic I wasn't aware of
at 22:31 12 Dec 2014

I am a personal tax adviser by trade. Not proud of it, a bit like admitting I vote Tory I suppose, but it pays the bills.

The things I see in my job would back up a lot of the gripes the most of us have. Tax schemes for the rich with no plans to make money from the investment, just to avoid tax. Foreign footballers paying a fraction of the tax they should as they are paid mostly in offshore image rights that avoid tax. The list goes on. It would bore you, if it hasn't already.

What galls me most, and I see this daily, is that the rich seem to pay a lot less as a fraction of their income to charity than the man in the street. Exceptions to the rule, certainly, just my perception from what I see.

The rich stay rich for a reason.

In fairness, he rarely gets a game and gives 100% when he does play, so I have no gripes with him. The first two goals came from poor challenges by Clyne and Davis further up the field, and the third was a beakaway goal.

Not a day for criticising individuals, we were just beaten by a better mor clinical team. Over the next few weeks we will need to use more of the squad so best that we support them all.

I agree, hugely talented. Trouble is, off the pitch he could change the mood of the whole squad.

My apologies, being new to the forum, I didn't realise you were the resident skate, had I realised, I would have met your post with derision, rather than a reasoned argument!

Did you honestly think we were going to finish second at the end of the season??

We were always going to drop points at some stage, the key will be how we react and how we cope with injuries. I still think 6th would be an incredible season for us, so to drop down to 3rd after 13 games, I am sorry if I don't share your fear of doom and gloom!

I think we are going to need someone to support Pelle up front. Mane has failed to impress in my opinion...so far, and Long seems better as an impact player. Wonder whether Jay Rod will be the extra spark we need in the New Year? I just get the sense that teams are starting to work us out, so we need something extra?

Reality check, we are not a Top 4 team, City are. The key for us will be whether we can stay above Spurs, Everton and Liverpool and grab a Top 6 place, we are not a Champions League team.....yet!

I don't think he will ever play for us again though. Shame, a talented individual with a bad attitude, the ruin of many a player.

Jay Rod's Odds to move to Spurs have just crashed...
at 15:58 27 Jun 2014

I would be surprised if Jay went in this transfer window. I have no doubt that MP may well return for him, but I understood ACL injuries to be unpredictable in that he may never be the same player again.

And they would have to pay his considerably large wage whilst he recovers over the next 4-6 months.

A move in January would seem more likely? This may be someone speculating that Saints are now agreeing to offers and assuming that Jay would be next?

If a fee is agreed, I would imagine the medical would be interesting !!

Luke Shaw Departure ! Why It Is Good For Saints !
at 12:39 27 Jun 2014

I think we need to look at this in the context of our financial reality. Whatever you think of Cortese, he clearly overspent on marquee signings and the training ground, so that the "new regime" have significant payments to make on these.

It would seem therefore that a significant chunk of the coming year's TV money will be earmarked to cover the shortfall, and the only way we are going to strengthen our squad is to do so via player sales and wise reinvestment.

I think most fans agree that we need to strengthen in key areas, such as GK, CB, strikers, so without cashing in on some of our more valuable assets, I can't see how we can address some of the other shortcomings in our squad.

I would therefore agree with Nick that by selling Luke at £30m and replacing him as best we can at say £10m, would free up significant funds to buy value players in key areas, and could actually strengthen the squad. By value I mean identifying quality at sensible prices like we did with Lovren and Rodriguez, rather than marquee signings.

My initial reaction is that selling Luke at that price is very good business, but time will only tell. I would prefer to reserve judgement on this sale, the so called ambition of the club and our transfer policy until the transfer window closes at the end of August. We will then see who we have sold and how the funds have been used to strengthen the squad. It was all doom and gloom when MP left, but most fans seem happy with the replacement; let's do the same with players, see how they are replaced, before deciding we are destined for a relegation scrap.

Arsenal or Hull
at 08:00 17 May 2014

Hull for me, would love to see Arsenal win nothing again, and I always thought Steve Bruce was a gentleman manager, very gracious and praising us when we beat them twice this season.

I can't see anything other than an Arsenal win, but then I thought Wigan had no chance last year.

Saints V West Bromwich Albion The Verdict
at 15:06 12 Jan 2014

Overall a pretty good performance against a well organised team who made it hard to break them down. A good 3 points against the sort of team we may have lost to last year, or even drew with at the beginning of this season (ie West Ham, Sunderland).

Good news that we are well away from the bottom half of the table, giving us the freedom to look upwards towards 8th, possible 7th?

A few might have this one, as it was local......I bought tickets to see Pavarotti at the Rose Bowl but he died not long after the tickets went on sale. It was such a shock as he had been in such good health up to that point.
