Huw Edwards.

My guess had no relationship to what I might think is deserved by Edwards, but was based on the sentencing guidelines and what I remembered of similar cases. I don't think there is any basis in the guidelines for making an example of a person because they are famous. As it happened, my guess was slightly above what was decided.

When I was guessing what the sentence would be I was thinking that 12 months suspended was about right. In the event, the magistrate was a fraction more lenient, but the difference isn't huge bearing in mind that if Edwards keeps his nose clean the extra 6 months wouldn't mean much.

That seems a remarkably unChristian thought for a Baptist. I agree that it would be very undesirable for Trump to be elected, but political violence could quickly become a two-way street.

Some thought the most we could hope for from Kyle Naughton was to have a cheap backup for the occasional game, but actually he must be one of the first on the team sheet, even if the plan is that he'll come off after about 70 minutes. He is having a bit of a late Renaissance. For me he has starred in a couple of recent games.

The death of the "Screamer"

There may be something in the argument that managers are discouraging shots from distance, However, a change that in my opinion works in the other direction is the ball. It is lighter and moves more in the air, That was evident in the goal Duran scored over the weekend, which swerved away from the keeper. As a former keeper myself, albeit only at uni level, I would much rather be fielding the ball from several years ago than the present one.

Sir Keir is said to be wanting to know more about the Albanian option (another version of off-shore, outside the EU processing). Presumably. the Rwanda arrangement could have been adapted to be more similar to the Italian deal with Albania.

There are interesting developments in the last couple of days south of the river Seym in western Kursk. This is the area where Russian troops along the border now need to be re-supplied by pontoon bridges, which mostly have a very short life span. To the east of this area Russian forces have managed to push Ukrainian forces back on the western edge of their incursion into Kursk. However, the big news is that there is now a second Ukrainian incursion further west along the international border that is pushing north towards the Glushkovo area. Bloggers from both sides are saying that this new salient outflanks the counter-attacking Russian forces who cannot retreat north because of the Seym river. Ukrainian sources say the Russians in this area are close to being encircled, and that this was a deliberate trap. We'll see in the next couple of days.

Is Sir Keir as serious as he has said about the Nolan principles? Was "frockgate" just the result of a simple overslght?

The optics are getting even worse. The critics say the Government tried to mitigate the effects of a FOI request by slipping out their response on a Friday night. An equality analysis is less comprehensive than an impact assessment. The impact of curtailing the WFA still looks awful, especially for older disabled people.

So you think we did miss out there? I didn't think Humphreys was exactly Burnley's star man, and he picked up the two yellows. It was a game where Leeds had lots of possession but missed their chances. I am tempted to reflect on your views on players as "different gravy", but will reign myself in.

Well I guess it depends what parts of Ronald's game you focus on. He made some good runs and tackled well a few times, but I thought his crossing was pretty awful. He catches the eye, but the phrase "flatters to deceive" comes to mind at the moment. Obviously i hope he will settle down and the end product will improve.

Whittaker contributed to Plymouth's surprise win over Sunderland, when the keeper turned his shot onto the underside of the bar, before the ball went in off a defender.

Red for our ex-loanee Humphreys playing for Burnley. I don't think we missed out on much there.

I thought we defended well today, and this was a very good result against a strong team. What was less impressive was our goal threat. If you ignore the own goal, our keeper had a lot more work to do than the Norwich keeper, and the goal efforts they produced were better than our's. Cullen toiled away gamely but looked weak in the air, and indeed didn't get much on target on the ground. Vipotnik was pretty anonymous again. The other disappointing thing is that Ronald seems to me to have regressed; his crosses and general end product did not match his approach work.

I would say that Putin has already made idle threats and been told to desist by his more powerful patron, Xi. We need to be clear with Putin that if he presses the button it is the suicide button. The word "goading" is a perverse inversion of reality.

The meeting took place and we just see more equivocation and obfuscation. We get more weakness from Biden and waffle from Starmer.

So if there is inconsistency in what a key witness says in a grievance interview and at trial it means nothing? I think defence lawyers will disagree. However, as I said before, I make no judgement about guilt or innocence, and am concerned mainly with what seem to be certain issues concerning due process. I am merely keeping an open mind while waiting to see if the arguments of the sceptics have real substance.

There was some push back from the sceptics today in the form of evidence presented in interviews undertaken for the grievance procedure. I don't know what to think and wait to see what else emerges.

The only good thing that can be said about Fernandez is that he likes our beautiful West Wales. Or, as somebody else hinted, it could be one of our lovely Welsh women.

At face value, the absence of an impact assessment seems at odds with expected practice when new legislation is introduced.

https://erskinemay.parliament.uk/section/4986/impact-assessment/

However, the change is being made in the form of secondary legislation, meaning via the introduction of a regulation using powers granted under existing primary legislation (the Social Security Contributions and Benefits Act 1992 and other related social security Acts). The regulation is: The Social Fund Winter Fuel Payment (Amendment) Regulations 2024.

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2024/869/introduction/made

https://lordslibrary.parliament.uk/changes-to-winter-fuel-payments-the-social-fu

The Government will probably argue that as no new Bill is involved, then no impact assessment is necessary. Even so, this will be unusual and highly controversial. Some will say the Government is showing a cavalier disregard for a process that Labour itself has used to hold the last Government to account on many occasions.
