Ebbsfleet (H) match thread on 04:06 - Feb 9 by TalkingSutty

Absolute garbage performance yesterday, we all know McNultys limitations and his inability to change things up during a game. The squad he has assembled is designed to play one way and that's it. He won't change, he can't change and project 5000 will never be given a chance because people won't pay hard earned money to be bored to death. He takes the passion, desire and fun out of the game and the players body language tells you that, there was only one team pumped up to win the Derby game on Tuesday and that was Oldham, we looked frightened to death of losing it, tentative in everything we did and overplaying for the sake of it. The goalkeeper must have fired 25 long balls up to Mitchell over the last two games and he's hardly won one of them, even if he had he is normally isolated. What sort of tactic is that?

Having said all of that it's not a coincidence that this week's performances have coincided with playing on our cabbage patch of a pitch, it looks like it's collapsing in every area now, I've never seen it look so bad. The players don't look like they have confidence in their passing and control, it actually looks dangerous underfoot in certain areas and it's totally not conducive to how McNulty wants the team to play. I'll be very surprised if we fulfill our home fixtures at spotland this season to be honest. One last thing, the penalty shout was nailed on in the second half so we didn't get the rub of the green there. A depressing afternoon and a squad of players that is capable of producing much more than we have seen this week. The buck stops with the manager and his assistant and also those in the Boardroom. McNulty harping on in his post match interview about 'respecting the point' against the poorest team in the league speaks volumes, he's a coach not a manager and that's very evident from his relaxed demeanour in his post match interviews. Our club is merely a stepping stone for his own career, same as BBM.

I apologise TS... I wanted to post a match report but just couldn't find the words.

Would someone be so kind and tell Freda and I when this is all over please. I simply can't watch any more of this.

Jim is going nowhere and that’s a worry after the borefest of yesterday.

To cautious and sooooo slow in the build up from the back. Yesterday both East and Gilmour holding hands close to the edge of our own box.

Waller and Hogan (take your pick) both guilty of the ultra safe short ball when TAR was 35 yards further advanced, in space and would have been a more positive ball forward.

When we do some nice stuff we don’t shoot.

When we fizz the ball across the goal line it’s aimless as we never have a forward anticipating the tap in opportunity.

Give the players 3 days off I say - reconvene Wednesday morning for some soul searching. Train hard Weds and Thursday and travel south On Friday. We need to freshen this up and quickly as much more will test the patience of the hardiest of Dale fan.
Bloody awful yesterday. Jim and the players all need to step up and offer so much more.

I believe we have another game on Tuesday versus Wolverhampton Wanderers U11s, or something - in any case a pointless opportunity to do some more damage to the pitch.

We were that crap yesterday that the only team we are capable of beating currently is ourselves.

Talking about Big Jim's post match interview Sutty have you seen John Colemans post match interview Barrow 3 - 0 Gills, if not the brace yourself !
It's about having a bit of passion and fire in your belly, which sadly Big Jim seems to have neither !

If what McNulty said yesterday about the uncertainty of when the rest of the competition will take place is right, then there is no reason whatsoever to play on Tuesday if there’s any chance the pitch will suffer further.

Perhaps it's a clever smoke screen to bamboozle the non football folk. But Jim has spoken about other non league teams going through a building process before getting promoted to the EFL.

Hmm... not really

No disrespect to Ebbsfleet, but in that case we should've been in the playoffs by three points with the absolute minimum of enterprise

The thing is James, its pointless building over a number of seasons, if the plans are flawed in the first place. What is being proved is that if you are a lower league club, and you want to get up the Leagues, playing like a League one club with non-league players and loanees is not a foolproof recipe for success.
Put simply , teams that have spent a while at this level relish the opportunity to put a spoke in our plans. They beat you with grit, determination and sheer bloodymindedness and a reasonable amount of skill.... we have probably more skill, but not enough of the rest of the equation and thats why we need more experience, power and athleticism particularly in the forwards. Defensively we are fine , we just need better attacking options, we cannot afford not to score a goal or more in every game.

There can’t be a Plan B when the players are all clones. Small, whippet like.
No way would someone like Peter Vincenti or Calvin Andrew have got anywhere near a BBM or a BJ team.
There are times though when you need lads like to win against certain teams.

All for debate and identifying the obvious deficiencies of Dale teams past and present but can’t ignore factual inaccuracies.

Andrew appeared plenty of times under BBM and Aaron Wilbraham featured regularly too. He also employed Jake Beesley in the Vincenti role on the right at times during the relegation season.

We went down that year because BBM was unable to find a defensive structure to see out games we should have taken more points from. As illustrated by the fact we scored 61 goals. This is no defence of him as a manager, he failed miserably because that squad should never have been relegated.

So should we give Jim a break, because he is improving the defence? If next season goal scoring hasn't improved along with a sustained defensive performance, that will be a bad sign.

It does. We’ve needed steel all season, especially in midfield and as an option up front.

But the comparisons to BBM don’t.

McNulty is being given a break, most points about what’s wrong are valid and have been all season. Nobody can argue rationally about all the positives.

The lack of tactical flexibility during games is down to him though and reasonably easy to address. He hasn’t so far.

I think thats about right, McN has a vision of what his team needs in each position, I suspect he isnt very flexible as each change probably means a re-think in the other 9 outfield positions...easier to find a clone to fit the system... The problems start when the system itself isnt working as he thinks it should and he hasn't got any options on board to make radical changes.. hence more of the same.. its fatally flawed, his emphasis is essentially defensive. He now needs to figure out how to win against tight defences, I would suggest 2 new forwards.... 1 big brute of a centre forward ( Cardwell at Southend last season would have been ideal) who can head the ball and a poacher.
