I remember the start of the 69 to 70 season was a long home run of wins with lots of goals. Terry Venables debut season as a player. Marsh scored a hat trick against Blackpool in torrential rain. I think that might have been 6 wins on the trot

Some list of gargantuan victories that for the most expensively assembled squad in championship history. Just makes the run Marti has them on even more impressive. And, as must always be said, f*** the Redknapps.
FIVE on 11:23 - Jan 8 with 1481 views | DannyPaddox | 75/76 (but of course) we did 9 straight home wins from Boxing Day till the end of the season. Norwich 2-0 Brum 2-1 Wolves 4-2 Ipswich 3-1 Cov 4-1 Man City 1-0 Boro 4-2 Arsenal 2-1 Leeds 2-0 An exceptional run but in the context of what came before, squad, and injuries, this season’s run is just as remarkable.

I agree. Did I imagine one of the sports' sites saying we were the only team in the top four leagues to have done it this season?

I’ve read we’re currently the best in form home team in all 4 leagues. I couldn’t say if any one else has done 5 at home in a row this season but Gary Waddock & Albert Adomah’s Walsall (as everyone’s calling them) could equal it on Saturday. Edit: surreal having this conversation - it’s barely January and we went into December still without a home win. [Post edited 8 Jan 11:52]

In 72/73 we won 11 (ELEVEN) home league games on the spin: Orient 3-1 PNE 3-0 Burnley 2-0 Huddersfield 3-1 Swindon 5-0 Villa 1-0 Blackpool 4-0 Pompey 5-0 Luton 2-0 Brighton 2-0 Fulham 2-0 Don't know for sure if that's our record but it's got to be up there. Be handy if we could that this season.

Amazing that we only conceded two goals in that run and had a positive goal difference of +30 from it.

With hindsight I would have taken runners-up spot as long as it came with the consolation prize of poaching Dave Thomas off them. I believe he received 2 (TWO) medals that season. He was a winner and a runner-up.

Yeah, that's what strikes me - that this run is achieved at the same level as Redknapp and at a fraction of the cost.

Haha was watching Redknapp Jr “punditing” last night and he said something inane about what coaches should do to improve their teams - I instinctively yelled at the screen, “your old man never fking did that!”

Was that when we played on the plastic pitch Was a MASSIVE advantage for ourselves. Could be unbeaten at home all season. Others could not cope with the wildly erratic bounce. We were obviously training on it to learn how to best play on it.

The second season of the pitch. We lost twice that season at home, to Sheff Wed early on and then to ch*ls** incredulously the day after Boxing Day. That three points kept them up in the end as they stayed up by two points, the closest they've come to playing third tier football. [Post edited 8 Jan 15:03]

It may have been an expensively assembled squad at the time but there would have been hundreds bigger since. We didn’t spend a lot on transfer fees, just wages whereas nowadays our rivals spend a fortune on both.

There still won't have been many wage bills bigger than £80m for a Championship season. Few of the relegated teams might have done it since but not many.
