The Summer of ‘24 - ins, outs and maybes 09:43 - Apr 28 with 79504 viewswessex_exile

As suggested on the matchday thread, let’s kick off the traditional summer transfer speculation. I’ll start with our current loanees. I doubt Palace would release Owen Goodman, and if they did, would we want him or even be able to afford him? Of the rest, I’d definitely like to see Alastair Smith and maybe Riley Harbottle sign if they were released. As for the rest, they’ll be heading back to make room for new choices.

Could this be our first signing in the transfer window.

MATT Macey has been linked with a move to Colchester United.

The 29-year-old goalkeeper is set to join the League Two side according to Pete O’Rourke, transfer correspondent for Football Insider.

Colchester are on the lookout for a new goalkeeper for next season, following Owen Goodman's return to parent club Crystal Palace after his loan spell and Sam Hornby's release.

Macey started his career at Bristol Rovers but did not make a first-team appearance for them.

The 6ft 6in keeper joined Premier League club Arsenal in 2014 and played for the Gunners in the EFL Cup and Europa League.

During his time at the Emirates stadium, Macey had loan spells at Accrington Stanley, Luton Town and Plymouth Argyle before he left Arsenal in 2021 to join Scottish Premiership side Hibernian.

He spent a year at the Edinburgh club before returning south of the border to rejoin Luton on a permanent basis, in the summer of 2022.

Macey joined Portsmouth on loan in January 2023, a few days after Danny and Nicky Cowley had departed the club.

He eventually signed for the South Coast club on a permanent basis 12 months later and played regularly for them in the 2022-23 season.

Macey was released by Portsmouth earlier this month and is now being linked with a move to Colchester.

If he signs, I suspect that boy Matt Macey will very quickly become 7' tall

6' 7'' according to Wikipedia. Could be a good signing as he has played in the SPL & League One. A tall commanding keeper is definitely what we need.

Kane Gilbert is leaving Halstead Town and scored 37 goals last season so could be a good player if we decide to sign him. He is only 23 so definitely scope for improvement IF he can make the jump from Essex Senior League to L2 which could be a gamble - though Joe Taylor jumped from Non league to the EFL and scored for fun.

Hmm, step 5 to league two is a heck of a jump Crash.
At step five level that's not necessarily a big goal haul although he clearly knows what the goal is.
If he were 18 or 19 maybe. But one never knows.
One thing I'm confident of is that the U's will know about him.

The problem is that if he was 18 or 19 and scoring regularly like that then Championship and even Premier League clubs would be fighting for him as well. I reckon he could play at a higher level but the question is how high...

For info .

FORMER Colchester United left-back Ryan Clampin has signed for National League new boys Braintree Town.
Good move for him.

Rumours tonight are that Read and/or Fevrier have been sold and that Anderson is signing permanently after completing his medical.

Macey will be a quality keeper for us. Hopefully some more quality will follow him in soon.

I hate this time of the year when all we have is rumours and speculation. Luckily the first positive transfer has appeared. As all good coaches will state you must have a team built around a spine. That's the goalkeeper what's the speculation for centre midfield and that elusive goalscorer.

Not surprised about Read as felt he signalled he would be off with his comments at the end of the season
Cowley has been setting it up for players like Read, etc to be leaving
Again no surprise about Anderson

Rumours were that Matt Bloomfield was in for Read to take him to Wycombe, Stockport were very keen on Fevrier, not sure about Anderson, he is a decent player but can we keep him fit?

Good move for Jayden, with a three year contract and an option on a fourth. Probably tells us how much value they place on him, and how much they probably paid as a result. It’s frustrating that last season’s champions, who’ll probably do well this season too, could clearly see the quality in our squad, yet there we were trying to avoid relegation.

Some interesting and refreshing ideas from the Stockport County photographer.

County have also put together an innovative and detailed written text to inform supporters of Jayden's qualities.

It's worth taking a look ....

Sorry to see him go but Dave Challinor a good Manager.
So for Jayden it's one DC to another.
We have expected him to leave as well so hopefully our DC has some good replacements lined up.
Maybe Jay will stay and become.e an important cog?

Very depressing news. A class player that, under the circumstances, we were lucky to see in a U’s shirt. Like, Mingi, Read and Chilvers, the sort of player you cannot afford to lose if you are serious about getting out of this league in the right direction.

I guess the transfer fee will go some way to paying the wages of the ridiculous number of coaches and analysts and the stupid academy.

Any word on a climb down from stiffing the faithful to park on away days?

The ability to get everything wrong, all the time is as staggering as it is depressing.

The stench of inevitability gets stronger every year.

I don't quite agree with that - I think DC has spoken to RC with a list of players he is targeting and positions he wants filled and unfortunately to fill these positions he will need decent wage offers and possibly even transfer fees.

DC knows what direction he wants to take the U's and unfortunately sacrifices ultimately have to be made if he wants the players who he is targeting..

I think Stockport have ambition and will surprise a few people next season.

If you take Read out of it, the remaining players scored a total of 15 goals last season! We would be relegated by Christmas!
