Crawley Match Thread on 17:56 - Jul 9 with 4755 views | mikechaj | My take on this afternoon. First half - unspectacular but professional performance- Crawley only got over the halfway line on a handful of occasions and I think Walsh touched the ball 5 times at most. High press, great work rate apart from Dykes who played like a statue. Second half - where do I start? Positives - Bonne; youād never know his heart was at Ipswich. Led the line, great effort, if heād played in the first half instead of Dykes we would have been 4 up at half time. Shodipo; played down the centre behind Bonne, fast, direct always wanted the ball. Dune; usual Dunne performance, shame he was drowning in a sea of mediocrity. Negatives - Mahoney; good keeper but at least a foot too short. Another foot and heād have saved the third goal. Kakay; out of position regularly, poor error for their second goal Hamalainen; lousy like last season, some nice flashes going forward but defensively non existent, lightweight and canāt tackle Gubbins; completely out of his depth Midfield - what midfield?? Dozzell; some nice touches and passes but frequently behind his player, resorts to fouling far too much Masterson; unsurprisingly looked like a centre half playing in midfield. Defensively suspect and his challenge for the penalty was reckless and unnecessary Owens; totally anonymous, you wouldnāt have known he was actually playing. Completely ineffectual. And Kelman? Looked disinterested and the game completely passed him by. Scary second half where for the last 30 minutes we were pegged back in our own half and in truth, had the game gone on for another 10 minutes, we would have conceded at least two moreā¦.

Crawley Match Thread on 17:45 - Jul 9 by distortR | The second string team had players who may be ok possibly made to look worse then some of those around them - stick them in a better line up and they may be fine. there was also no Armstrong and Bettache, maybe others, maybe more incoming. I wouldn't get too worked up yet. |
You always say that. I want to get worked up.

Been puzzled for a long time about Bettache. Whenever he's had a look in, he's always looked a cut above the rest of the under 23 lot and really not far off first team levels - composed on the ball, forward thinking, not intimidated. Then he gets Outer Mongolia'd to the most basket case club in the entire league last season and is now seemingly out of the picture completely. We're still a strange club ourselves sometimes.

The fringe players out on loan at lower league clubs last season returning and, by the accounts on here, struggling. Ć°ÅøĀ¤ā

Yeah, but maybe if Joe Gubbins had been given a chance to train with the first team, instead of reputedly being sent straight back (Awful way to treat a young player), he'd have come on a bit more? So let's not rehash all that, particularly on the basis of one game, and one in which we don't know what the players were actually instructed to do - if the management team were trying something out. Let's give them a chance first, eh?

We have a reasonable first team but no squad depth and the academy players are frankly not good enough. I am hoping Mick Beale can see these problems and work out how to fix them - some of them we have had for many years and nothing has been done - lack of a quality right wing back and a goalscorer for example.

Play some youth surrounded by established players to perhaps talk/guide them through the game? Does that make sense? It at least gives them a platform to play alongside established players rather than us looking for scapegoats for that second half performance? Just my 10ps worth, plenty more pre season friendlies to see what the lads are about. Up the R's!

I'd give a shout out to George Thomas, I though he did well, full of energy, quick, looked for the ball and supported Albert defensively. Should have scored but other than that - yeah.... And big shout out to all the fans today, I have been to all the Crawley friendlies over the years as live locally but nothing like the numbers today...

The counter argument is i suppose that as a new manager this was the first opportunity to put his strongest available 11 on the field against a league team so he needed to have a look at them as a unit. I
Crawley Match Thread on 21:31 - Jul 9 with 3319 views | sdm1508 | Thought Beale's post match interview was good. Pointed out the good stuff but also didn't hold back about the things that could be better and last 20 minutes showed him what they need to work on. Also said they had a double training session yesterday so maybe some heavy legs. Probably also explains the wholesale changes at half time. Would be good though to see a mixture of '1st team and reserves playing together. Although maybe done this way to see what they are made off. Beale has said a couple of times now that if you can't do what he wants you won't be here long
Crawley Match Thread on 21:36 - Jul 9 with 3284 views | aston_hoop | I'm actually feeling pretty positive about today. Given its very early days yet, I thought the style being played by the senior players in the first half was very exciting. Gone was the pissballing around at the back, it was fast and sharp, incisive, relentlessly attacking. If we get it right, we are going to be really fun to watch I think. If that team started the season but with Dieng for Walsh, Amos for Thomas and Willock for Roberts, I'd have no issue. Its just what happens when we don't have all those players. But new players will join between now and September.

Kids like Duke McKenna, Armstrong and Bettache maybe, but they didn't play today. Owens, Kakay, Masterson, Hamalainen & Shodipo did and other than Masterson I don't think anyone is calling for the others to be in the 1st team squad.

Thatās because they are not getting a game for QPR, instead we get Thomas and Owens. Thomas provides a lot of effort but just doesnāt seem to have the composure in front of goal. And yes I know Owens has had plenty of injuries during his time at QPR, but perhaps that is why he should not still be given a new contact.

Having just watched the 90'back, with all due respect that last line is total nonsense. Hardly got in our half after they scored and only had one speculative effort over the bar with 10 seconds to go. Not sure why the gnashing of teeth on here, they had a good 15 minutes and that was about it. At this stage of the summer, thought we were fine.
