I think Mick McCarthy is probably the only realistic replacement available who might steady the ship. Learned from Jack Charlton that you get the defence right way before you do anything else. More than a hint of Allardyce-lite about the overall performances of his teams in the past, usually not great to watch but they generally don't ship many and points are picked up. If this coming week goes nuclear, we could do far worse.

Can we even afford a new manager? All the club's money's in Joey Barton's bank account. [Post edited 20 Aug 2018 8:05]

Dave Mc on Twitter on 20:02 - Aug 19 by 08olesen | The whole thing just seems a bit of a mess really. The recruitment was poor all summer regardless of the financial restrictions we were under, and that means McClaren hasn't got the players he needs to play the passing football he wants. As unpopular as it is, that blame has to go to Les, because at the end of the day he overseas the football side of things and should have either warned them that McClaren football wouldnt work with Lynch etc, or secured at least some reinforcements on the small budget we do have. We could all see that the squad was weak before the season started and maybe a Big Sam type manager was what we needed (god that hurts to say). If we loose the next three i cant see McClaren lasting much longer. But who do we bring in next....what about if they then loose 4 games? The whole things a mess and is upsetting to watch. Still think Holloway needed to go, but the new man seems to be a very poor choice considering the squad available to him. |
Shouldn't need Ferdinand to tell McClaren that Lynch can't play out from the back, would have been obvious in the first training session and if not during the first 3 games before yesterday

Amit will bust open his piggy bank if he has to, the rot will contaminate the 'fresh start at the top' strategy we've seen rolled out earlier this week. He won't want a festering situation to taint him so soon after returning. All an 'if', though...if the senior pros pull their finger out on Tuesday night and chisel out an ugly 1-0 with a scuffed goal and a put-it-out-of-play policy, it'll be hailed as a corner turned and the circus will at least roll on to Saturday. And maybe beyond. If not, money will be found from somewhere. You can bank on that.

At the end of the day SM was hired as a top manager/coach he has overseen pre season so he has to sort out the mess change tactics or what ever he thinks fit if he cannot turn it around in the next few games then he needs to go 7-1 is unacceptable

Surely we can't allow a manager to just go away from a philosophy though ?

Dave Mc on Twitter on 19:46 - Aug 19 by DejR_vu | People were saying relegation from the Premier League was a good thing; opportunity to re-group. If we go down again it will be an absolute disaster. With the rules as they are we're absolutely buggered as it is. Can't see any way out of this. The only tiny glimmer is the owners go, Amit buys it lock stock and barrel and puts a 10 year plan in place to stabilise and then move forward. |
The company that made the 4 Year Plan should have just kept the cameras rolling and made it a fly on the wall series for every season! It’s way better than anything that HBO have produced! It’s a f*cking car crash of huge proportions, probably a bigger mess than the Chicken farmers at Blackburn and approaching the goings on at Pompey a few years ago? It’s pretty obvious now that something behind the scenes prompted Tony and Ruben to call it a day... probably a big falling out about the appointment of Shteve??? I’ve said it a few times this weekend but let’s get behind the team and at least give McLaren til Christmas... maybe something will click with the team and tactics? Besides which who the hell would come and manage our club right now???

I don't think anyone believes that a change of manager will solve the problems overnight. One day, I am very sure, we will find our own Sean Dyche or Eddie Howe, but in the meantime desperate measures may be required to head off a Luton-style decline. If another relatively short term appointment keeps us from the drop, I think it's worth the expense. But that's just me.

Dave Mc on Twitter on 19:59 - Aug 19 by daveB | Ferdinand has been ignored/overruled on every managerial appointment so far. Big thing he has done is improve scouting young players and the kind of players being brought in at under 23 level has been really good with some like Manning, Eze, Smyth and bright Samuel making it to the first team. Holloway seemed to want to go along with Ferdinands wishes of a younger squad and more hungry lower league type players but McClaren never fitted that brief and is looking in the reserve teams of premier league clubs which served us so well in the past |
if you had said to me before Ollie went when we knew we were losing Mackie, Nedem, Perch and Robinson I would have said and did say we would need experienced older heads 2 centre backs one with pace, a right back, a back to goal centre forward and a replacement for Washington. I don't think that has changed at all we have lost experience and leadership on and off the field. We've then lost our 1st choice right back and we are left with a first choice back 5 that on paper looks slow, lacks passing ability with 3 of them with no championship experience. Our 3 strikers are the same as last year with all the same problems and none of them capable of playing on their own. On top of that we've bet the house on Eze who has no chance of thriving in this shit show. I don't think it would have been any different under holloway, we've started with the formation he ended the season with, a horrible start of fixtures he would have had and I don't think the squad additions would have happened either because of FFP. We've had a convergence of issues here a combination of FFP, years of mismanagement, poor contract and player management / acquisition and a forthcoming transfer ban. Add to that some ejit thought this year would be a great year to try out a neo pink kit and yes its sold more shirts but you've got to bloody sure you can carry it off with good football before you go down that route

If McLaren and co were to go now, the settlement would be minimal. Either a new manager comes in on more or less what we have been paying McLaren, or (as suggested elsewhere) Chris Ramsey - already on the payroll - steps up. FFP or no FFP, we're not shaking the buckets just yet.

Problem is, we are already paying off Holloway... So that would be two managers we'd be paying off

Er...getting rid of Paul Hart and bringing in Neil Warnock was not exactly a bad move. Also a case for saying that Gerry Francis had run his course when Holloway was appointed in 2001. Lasted five years plus, how unthinkable is that now...

Jago for Allen Venables for Docherty About the only times I can think of. Someone mentioned Warnock replacing Hart but IIRC Hart was sacked and Mick Harford took temporary charge for about six weeks first.
