Schmeichel just not good enough? Wednesday, 22nd Jun 2011 05:59 Grayson lifts lid on "footballing reason" behind Danes departure. Simon Grayson has given more detail on the club's decision to accept a bid from promotion rivals Leicester City for Kasper Schmeichel on the official Leeds website. Monday's move saw a war of words erupt between player and club, Grayson appeared to have claimed he had been forced to act in the club's best interest due to Schmeichel's contract situation - he has one year left on his deal. However the keeper, who played under Leicester boss Sven Goran Eriksson at Notts County and Manchester City, was clearly angry and disappointed by suggestions he engineered the move. "It's been something we've been looking at in that I'm trying to improve the back four or five of last year, and when you concede the number of goals that we did, it's obviously an area where one or two players are vulnerable and we need to change it around slightly," Grayson was quoted as saying on both the official website and Yorkshire Radio. The Leeds boss went on to say he was always looking to improve and "When Kasper goes we will have other alternatives to make us better.." Grayson also indicated that subject to a medical, Leeds will bring in a new keeper once Schmeichel collects his P45 and heads to the Midlands. Undoubtedly this is a bold, carefully worded statement designed to divert the opinion that Leeds have been outmuscled by a promotion rival who clearly have the financial backing in the transfer market we do not have.
