Time wasting 08:38 - Mar 9 with 1641 viewsrichpr

Time wasting has reached new low levels. Absolutely spoiling football for me. Goalkeeper needing new studs on his boot - really!!!! He then takes 5 minutes putting his new boot on, tying his laces like a 4 year old and then trying to put his gloves on. Surprised his mum didn’t come out to do it for him. He was later booked for time wasting taking a free kick only to take just as long after he was booked. Ref was a soft touch.

Not just this guy yesterday but he was an embarrassment wasn’t he .

Nardi culpable of it too and I get embarrassed. One of the dozens of things that are ruining modern football and a lot of it is coming from goalkeepers

Keepers know they can go down injured and don’t have to leave the pitch after treatment so they’re using that to waste even more time.Being allowed to take a gk from either side has also helped them slow the game down to unacceptable levels, but the only way to clamp down on it is by booking players earlier and adding the correct amount of extra time.

A ref doesn’t need to have played the game to any sort of level to realise that the only teams who waste time are the ones who stand to gain the most from the present score line.

But all the time us fans cheer when it’s our teams doing it and rage when it’s the other team nothing will change.

Completely agree

I think there’s quite a big step from taking a bit of time over a goal kick or throw (Holgate took forever and no chance of a ref at this level giving a second yellow especially to a home team with ten men) and that boot/glove fiasco.

Nothing to stop the bloke killing as much time with a fake injury anyway but a stud being loose isn’t an injury and doesn’t warrant stopping play nor does a goalkeeper’s sudden inability to use Velcro after 25 years of goalkeeping. Seen similar in rugby with a player’s contact lens falling out and that’s on him.

What can a ref really do other than add the time on (he didn’t, nor even close)?

You can usually expect minimum 4 or 5 minutes extra time to take account of all the subs. But here the keeper must have taken 4-5 mins for his stud change. We then had Bartley (I think) sitting on the floor for half a minute and delays all the way back up the pitch. That game should have had at least 10 minutes added on, probably more.
At the end of the day though we had one weak shot on target in 100 odd minutes so it probably didn’t matter. The sad bit was West Brom were average at best (even with 11 men and all that fire (power compared to us) and Nardi had nothing to do most of the match. If that’s the difference between play-off contenders and us then that’s a pretty fine line.

Or a rule you have to come off for 5/10 mins would kill it dead instantly

the time wasting was disgusting yesterday, never seen it as flagarant as that and he added nothing on really

We were never going to score but that drove me mad

I thought they were pretty poor

We just don’t have someone with nack or standing in the right place and converting from 5/10 yrds

Ref was poor yesterday - never in control of the game and guessed at a lot of decisions mostly in favour of West Brom. Any tiny bit of contact was a free kick to them whereas was had players pulled to the ground but he waved play-on.

The whole goal keeper farce was unbelievable - ref should have just told him to play on while they went to get his boot, if there was a genuine issue with it (I doubt there was).

On Holgate, he knew once he had been booked that he could do what he wanted too, as the ref didn't have the b@lls to issue a 2nd yellow with West Brom already down to 10.

What is needed is a ref strong enough to yellow card someone around 60-65 minutes when the p1ss taking starts. AND, if it carries on, give the player a 2nd yellow.

They normally spread the time wasting duties around though to lessen the zero chance of a 2nd yellow.

Said it before, saying it again: lay down as long as you want, but just stop the clock.

Cleatly, there's the additional element of breaking the oppo's momentum but that's up to the ref to stop it and if they do nothing, then while we can moan, let's not the shithousery cost us time-lost.

It's a sad state of affairs that that level of "sportsmanship" is condoned, even applauded.
I get that it's the way the game is these days and the money and jobs involved but it's also taking from those who have paid to see a competition, either in person or remotely.
Guess it's just a reflection of society these days.

Not seen the red card from a decent replay yet but he did the right thing to take his time, speak to the linesman etc.

Then spent the whole second half desperate to get out of there with the home fans content enough to not lynch him. Classic second tier refereeing really. The stupidity of mostly Colback and Lloyd made the task rather easy.

Styles very lucky to get away without a second yellow. They had pretty much carte blanche to do what they wanted once the ref had set the standard as Portsmouth did.

IIRC the referees are marked by the clubs after games and I think it is 1 point for wearing the correct attire, another point for knowing the rules and the rest up to 10 based on perception of their performance. A score of 3 or fewer meant a hearing to explain the reason for the low score and this is where the clubs themselves could affect the future of timewasting.
Whether they are willing to or not is something that could be affected by good fan pressure, fan forum meetings, emails to the club / PGMOL etc. It's a thorny subject and from what we have seen with attempts to tackle this issue seem to be a draconian clampdown for a month or so then back to the status quo. The new permitted time to hold on to the ball by a GK will go the same way I feel.

The grass is always greener.

That would rely on all managers condemning time wasting rather than just the manager on the wrong end of it.
The Sky commentators don’t help by calling it game management rather than cheating an opponent and the fans.

I saw a few wba fan’s comments on the bbc about Saito diving and it didn’t warrant a red card, but I’ve only seen it once last night so I can’t really say one way or another.

Game's in a bit of a state in many ways isn't it. That was a complete farce yesterday. Since when has "I've got a loose stud" been a reason to stop a game for six minutes? Everybody knows what's going on, you've got Bartley standing there grinning and goading the away end, referee just stands and watches it all happen. All in the name of "shithousing" and "dark arts". We wouldn't have scored if we were still there now so it made no difference to the score but still, I just stand there and think it's a shame what the game has developed into.

When the game was over, I went fuming into the kitchen raging about the boot/ glove antics of the goalkeeper. Mrs Hants told me I said the same thing every week.

Over the years, there have been a few times I've felt like jacking it all in, but with the Ko times and this housery I'm the closest yet.

Can't understand why the refs / law-makers are so weak about it. They have all the power. The governing association is a complete monopoly. They only have themselves to blame for this brand of cheating, which is what it is.
