I know we've a postie or two on here.
Denmark stopping letter deliveries after this year.
Posties have been a lifeline to many folk over the years.
Even some folksongs written about 'em - “what a wonderful man the postman is” and, “ the post has got to get through”
Hope it won't be the same here, but I expect it will be.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stint as a postie, albeit as an agency worker. Two or so years ago, so things have changed (compulsory Sat and Sun) so stuff that. I’m sure a whole lot more for those that are doing it now.

Still in touch with a couple of good people in the Slough depot. Another great job gone wrong.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

Yep, they're a lifeline to many people and also the postie can often tell whether there's an issue at the property too.

We had 2 deliveries a day when I started in 1978,but there was a lot more post back in those days.I can see the day coming when you might get 2 or 3 deliveries a week in order to save money.
I’d hate to think what it’s like now,but it was a great job back then.

My old mate Harry, sadly gone used to deliver in Chiswick and had Sheila Hancock on his round.
He used to tell me there’s an offence of Impersonating A Postman.
Was he pulling my leg ?

I did it for three summers in the early 90s - clearing my overdraft as a filthy student.

I can't say exactly why, but it's stayed with me ever since as one of the jobs I was proudest to have done. I found out in the last couple of years that I had at least one postman in my family tree, so maybe that's it, who knows.

Judging by the price of a first class stamp these days I'm guessing the service as we know it is on its last legs sadly.

I thought this was about pasties.

I had a Ginster's pasty for me tea.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

My dad was a postie in the 70s & 80s based in the big West Central depot on New Oxford Street. The stories he’d tell me of the high jinks they got up to. There was an underground postal railway - a sort of Indiana Jones type unmanned track running from Paddington to Whitechapel with a few stops in between. The casket type carriages would be full of letters and parcels for each sorting office. Now and then then the train would arrive with a furious banging and shouting from within one of the carriages. On opening there would be a terrified ashen-faced newbie or temp. After clambering out of the casket they would be taken to the cafe for a recuperating cup of tea or even to the bar for something stronger. Sometimes instead of this they would be greeted with a cheery “Next stop Mount Pleasant” the casket doors would be closed again and on they went. I expect the health and safety killjoys have put a stop to this innocent fun by now.

Was a postal sorter on nights in Ireland back in the early eighties .
One of the best jobs I ever had .
Also used to deliver pension money to sub post offices .
Christmas was always fun as it was double pensions.
The Republicans were on a fund raising mission one Christmas, shall we say and one or two of the post office vans in other parts of the country had been commandeered .
Scary but exciting times .
Apparently more alcoholics than any other industry.
Which I don’t find surprising at all.

They actually sell tickets for those journeys now, although I guess they might have upgraded the carriages to make them slightly more comfortable.

My dad was a postie but a driver and I did some temp sorting and a few walks back in 1997.

A few people tried to give me money as it was Christmas I told them to give it to the real postie.
The other temp wanted to ditch the mail and go back (we had one of those red handcart thingys) I told him 'No we're f'kin not' did all of it bar a few we couldn't find. Had it just been this lazy feck they wouldn't have got the mail.

Same, did it as a summer job during uni - reported back for football after the break the fittest I’ve ever been.

On the Denmark news, I’m 0% surprised. Here in Sweden with a personal number, digital ID and digital inboxes we get post once a week in a busy period and even then it’s junk mail from estate agents or union magazines we don’t want but can’t cancel. Invoices for everything in life come electronically, doctors appointments, tax returns etc etc it’s all digital
