No great surprise to lose at Fratton Park but certainly not in this manner. On the face of it we have a pretty decent defence but to concede two goals in two minutes at the beginning of the second half is unacceptable.
We remain gloriously inconsistent but we have Marti and plenty of young emerging

Exactly my point about when we play the teams below us….we lower our standards and let them dictate the way they want to play.
We know this in advance and we still let them play that way. We headed the ball back to them ALL day long. Clearances were shocking and we had no midfield. Again.
We also had 8 days to rest and prepare for this one.
We had a strong bench. No need for long distance travel. |  |

Funny how we really struggle in physical direct dirty games, and the players you expect to do the best in this type of battle tend to come out worse. Really poor performances from Varane, Cook and Frey, down the spine. Nardi's kicking the worst it's been this season as well. Missed the first goal due to a technical problem 2nd one 100% down to Cook though I thought Paal could have done better. Only real positives were Yang who made a real difference and Lloyd.
Should also add that different officials would have led to a different game. There were some terrible fouls let go from the early minutes. Saito being fore armed is yellow in most games [Post edited 22 Feb 17:13]

Thankfully we only have to play them twice a season. Not stop big punts forward turning us around. Really awful to watch. Thought it could get ugly at 2-0 so I'm not too disappointed. That's likely our play off hopes over. Hopefully we can relax and enjoy the rest of the season. |
But the worry is that we mirrored Portsmouth in style.
There is zero quality in our central midfield, and that is why we hoof it over them. Its really poor and it won't change until it is fixed in the summer.

The line up should be reflective of the opposition. Poor Koki got battered from the off. Colback should have started and maybe Chair replaced with AL.

So we have a manager who, whatever his good qualities (and I agree he has qualities) also presides over what you strangely call our 'glorious inconsistency' and don't seem to see anything to at least wonder about there. For me, Marti is a promising young coach, but he's still learning at this level, and today demonstrates it to a tee, as well as reminding me what I knew already that Frey and Varane, at a minimum, are not good enough.
Oh, and we're still far too nice, both to referees and the oppo. Cook or Dunne should have been right in his face after that savage elbow on Koki.
Overall, we were uncompetitive, uncreative, and inept. 2-1 flattered us, and if the post-match interviews say anything else, there'll be part of the problem. [Post edited 22 Feb 17:21]

Poor match. We allowed pompey to do one on us and seemed unable to muster a decent response or performance ourselves. The lack of protection from the ref on Saito is disgraceful. I don’t mind seeing a tough game but when their guy Saydee launches into Alfie’s fair tackle after he’s done two awful tackles is poor show. We just didn’t have it in us today unfortunately.

Couldn't watch today but to sum up we seem to really be our own worst enemies we always shoot ourselves in the foot when we need to win the most.
Shouldve tried harder today to get the points on the board.

Koki will always get battered - it's the Champ. He was still our best player, though, albeit just in flashes.
Agree with you about Colback and Chair.
Our midfield is embarrassingly lacking. Now we've got the measure of Madsen and Varane (well, some of us), we need to get rid of both of them, and recruit an enforcer, a box-to-box 8, and a creative 10. Chair can't and won't do everything. Portsmoth are an average team at best, but they cut through us again and again, and could have had five or six. | |

I suppose it's a bit of hindsight, but either or both of him and Colback should have started today. The selection and set-up were evidently wrong, and Marti didn't have the nous or balls to change it. Mind you, our crass defending certainly didn't help. | |

Poor all round today. Bishop absolutely bullied every single one of our back 4 today. Not good enough.
As for the midfield, I mean the “ absent midfield” don’t get me starter. Varane giving it away time and time again and mr invisible, Sam field. 7 passes and 17 TOUCHES in 68 minutes. Mamma mia.
I understand resting Morgan as he’s young but this game was crying out for him. Someone who can get on it and knock it around, and most importantly pass FORWARD, colback improved us as he came on but the team was wrong for me today. | | | |

Marti is still learning at this level and I factor that in to my looking forward to next season. If there was ever a game Jack Colback should be starting it was today's and I really hope that Marti now see's that. The two man midfield with Chair playing more central really doesn't do us any favours especially against the more physical teams. It really makes you wonder about our preparation for this game.
For me there is no need to wonder about the inconsistency, as you say we have too many players who are not good enough and inconsistent.

I disagree with Clive's preview. We haven't improved this season: we're very easy to beat by basic teams like Portsmouth, our best player is a loanee and we still haven't got a decent striker.
This season is a real missed opportunity. Thought we were appalling today and played into their hands by booting the ball in the air all game. | | | |

They don't do that well - only 10th for home form in the Champ, slightly above us.
If people could stop fixating on our kit too and look instead at the issues with the players and coaching/set-up, it might help. | |

I think we've improved a bit, but it is built on sand and that is why I don't get excited by 4-0 wins against third bottom Derby.
Our midfield is fckin awful. And QPR should not be playing like a 1980s Wimbledon tribute act. | | | |
