Graeme Souness. 11:03 - Aug 15 with 11323 views | Snipper | He’s getting absolute pelters in the media, and especially Twà tter for his comments when talking about yesterday’s game between Chelsea & Tottenham. He was talking about the actual match being ‘a man’s game’ in reference to referee directives to clamp down on feigning injury after legitimate tackles. In my opinion, the world has gone bloody mad.

I walked into a meeting room with 3 girls in there (that i know) and said 'morning girls...am i even allowed to say that?' and they replied 'not really'. I can't really work it out - it wouldn't register a jot if someone, male or female, came up to me and a couple of other guys and said 'morning boys'. It's all very weird.

Graeme Souness. on 19:48 - Aug 15 by Tonto | I wonder how many people commenting on this actually heard the comment or have seen a transcript? Becuase the way it is being reported is that he said "its a man's game" which does seem OTT to criticise. (Or woke as some like to call it). But that isn't all he said. I've taken this from the BBC and the entire quote appears to be: "It's a man's game all of a sudden again, I think we've got our football back, as I would enjoy football - men at it, blow for blow, and the referee letting them get on with it." Now I accept that saying stuff live you often get a bit clunky with your language its not easy. Just ask James Haskell. But there are some extra connotations in that full quote. It does sound like a dig at the women's game especially when you consider a women's International was sitting next to him. It could be that Sourness was comparing it to a boys game or something else. Only he fully knows. But his wording was poor and opens itself up to scrutiny. |
It was nothing to do with the womens game, he was talking about the lack of rolling around, the fight on show, the needle between the teams and managers in both games yesterday. Taking that quote out in isolation it can be made to look like a dig at the womens game but it was honestly nothing to do with that.

This. He was saying how refreshing it was to see a premiership match with both teams bouncing out of tackles rolling around feigning injury.

I saw the conversation live and I don't think he was digging out the women's game at all. the chat was regarding how much more competitive the games this season have been with refs directed to not blow up for as many petty 'fouls' and minor collisions, letting the game be more combative and free flowing. There was also reference to other leagues (abroad) that we had become similar to in the respect of the number of stoppages and how little time the ball spent in play and how that was ruining the spectacle. unfortunate for him that the term he decided to use was 'mans game' rather than 'competitive'. might not have gained as much coverage had the other commentator immediatly blurted 'and women' which actually highlighted the perceived gaff.

Graeme Souness. on 16:24 - Aug 15 by QPR_John | “ VAR introduced in football: Furore ” Surely the furore is not about introducing VAR into football but the way it has been introduced. I’ll stand to be corrected but every other sport that has introduced video technology has had a relatively smooth transition. It’s only the football authorities that have made a pigs ear out of it |
Not true at all. Cricket - Wasn't it India who refused to use HawkEye and Clive has often posted about its huge detrimental effect on Rugby League. Speaking to a cricket fan at the weekend who is fed up , EVERY run out is greeted with the umpire making a TV sign - they NEVER give them on their own now, like the most obvious offsides are not flagged immediately in football - 'just in case'.

Agreed. They wouldn't have made an issue of it had you not asked. That being said, in a professional setting 'Good Morning Ladies' would probably be more palatable than 'Morning Girls'. If you're that worried about it then a simple 'Good Morning' will suffice. [Post edited 16 Aug 2022 14:22]

Graeme Souness. on 11:36 - Aug 15 by francisbowles | Haven't heard or seen his comments but it sounds about right to me. There is footballl and Womens football. They are two different games, played to the same rules. Womens football is a great game but it watches like a football match from many years ago, that is lots of kick and rush, losing possession but interspersed with great moments of skill. Now, I'm going to be controversial. Is anyone else slightly peeved that the TV channels now seem to want a woman footballer pundit on virtually every football (mens) show.? I think a pundit should be either a professional journalist or someone who has actually played or coached in professional football. (mens) |
Agree on the point that there are far too many (bad) female pundits that are there to just tick a box (Karen Carney is for me one of the worst and can barely string a sentence). However did you watch any of the Euros? There was hardly any kick and rush. It was pretty much all short, precise passes, heavily coached and very rarely did teams go long..
Graeme Souness. on 14:16 - Aug 16 with 1591 views | Benny_the_Ball | I suspect that many on here are of a certain vintage and they know exactly what Souness meant. "It's a man's game" was a common phrase that essentially meant that football is not for the faint of heart. At a minimum, players were (and still are) expected to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in. The phrase isn't designed to exclude women from the game. Souness' comment, whilst ill-judged given the company he was keeping, was meant in good faith. Whilst it's important that he learns from this and makes some reasonable adjustments for future broadcasts, it's also important that the younger generation respect their elders and make some allowances for traditional parlance. It's only "Outdated and inconsiderate" in the same way that using the word "woman" to describe a biological female is "transphobic" - In the real world where most people live, going further down that path just sounds like even more woke bullshit. Aye and getting away with it most of the time. I remember a particularly amusing ditty sung by the Celtic fans when he was manager at GR and had some sort of heart condition. That was nigh on 30 years ago, I am surprised the f*cker is still with us.

Nah. I don't find Crowe's greeting offensive but whether it was inappropriate is not down to you or me; that's governed by his company culture and working environment. NGB and I are simply pointing out that Crowe scored an own goal by immediately asking "Am I even allowed to say that?" This rhetorical question suggests that deep down Crowe suspected his "Morning girls" greeting could be deemed mildly inappropriate before he even said it. The irony is had he not asked the question, his colleagues probably would've thought nothing of it. Conversely, Souness didn't follow up his "It's a man's game" comment with the same rhetorical question. Given this and the fact that this phrase was widely used by his generation leads me to believe that he didn't set out to offend. [Post edited 16 Aug 2022 19:47]

Graeme Souness. on 03:54 - Aug 17 with 1178 views | numptydumpty | It's a phrase from the 70s that meant toughen up and it related to games involving men. If he had made that comment watching teh womens game, then that's when you question .... It's a phrase common to It's time. Sometimes people one need use their nouse a bit more ie the point he is trying to make and the context It's used in. And remember it's a common phrase meaning toughen up. It dates back to a time before Internet Facebook and youtube - and was common phraseology. Twenty five years ago, I called my.soon to be ex an easy lay after I found out she was a serial cheat. The context it was used in was relevant. Ridiculous play on words to create a story that isn't a story but like others have said today some people can be offended by someone opening a paper bag in the wrong fashion. Mad !!!

I didn't say you did find it offensive I was just pointing out that you've made a bigger deal out of Crowes situation then even Crowe and his female work colleagues did in the actual event. My point really is things like this lose its context on the Internet than in reality. It's nothing , no big deal but here we are grown men chatting shit about it for no reason other than to score points on message board wars..lol Things get exaggerated once people talk about it which is exactly what happened with Souness.
