EFL announcement on 14:29 - Mar 19 with 4111 views | MrSwerve | An idea - why not start the season back up around August (if possible), finishing around Xmas time. Internationals between Jan and summer 2021, when the Euros will take place. Start the next season in August 2021. Just an idea, not sure if it would work.

That's not so out there actually. It's either continue this season and have a big gap, or effectively cram 56 games into 9 months (with a multiple-week break inbetween seasons). A big gap as you say gives room for the Euros and other international football, and it also lets the domestic and european cups finish their ongoing tournaments. They could even start the 2021 season in July or earlier if they wanted less midweek games or the season to finish in April and give players a longer break. [Post edited 19 Mar 2020 14:38]

Every option will need to be looked at and wouldn't say it shouldn't happen, I'd think most lower league clubs would struggle with only about 4 home games from now to August 2021 without a big help from the FA and EFL etc. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I'd be happy if they even did the Euros between Feb-April 2021, give the players a 'normal' summer break and then back into the domestic season in August 2021. They're going to be having a very long break this season before they get back into it.

No way will Sky or the cartel of big clubs that run the game allow that. A whole season's income gone for the PL clubs? No chance.

Agreed. I can't see if this season being declared null and void either. Haven't most of the clubs in the top places in the Championship already said they'll go the legal route if that happens? Not to mention what Liverpool and other big clubs across Europe going for titles and the CL would do.

They'll certainly award the Scouse the title, and rightly so, they'd won it. Everything else is a lot more problematic as someone will sue.

It’s not right though because anything is possible until it’s impossible. Yes, I know it would be almost a certainty but there’s still a ‘maybe’ in there.

The EFL announced that they will use a 50M relief package to hand out a small amount to all 2nd-4th division clubs. It's odd though, because just a fortnight ago they stated that they couldn't contribute 2M to save Bury... https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/51951389 Championship clubs get 800k with an option of a 540k interest-free loan League 1 clubs get 252k with an option of a 183k interest-free loan League 2 clubs get 164k with an option of a 120k interest-free loan It's not much, but it's a start.

You need to think about what the consequences would have been if they had bailed out Bury. Not that simple.

Moral hazard? If clubs were legally turned back into community assets that should be run by local community trusts and not be speculative vehicles for any Thai, Sheik or Hanky than football might regain sanity and a sense of perspective. Obviously that's not going to happen.

Your point is valid but my questioning of whether the FA / EFL or whoever should hand out money to bankrupt clubs such as Bury in this case would be seen a precedent and other clubs will then deliberately mismanage their club financially in an effort to get promoted knowing that they’ll be bailed out.

To be turned back into something it has to have been one in the first place. As far as I'm aware SCFC has never been a community asset. It's always been owned by somebody, as have most clubs out there.

Bolton were bailed out with the help of a 2M loan from the PFA, despite overspending much like Bury did. Had they not received the loan, Bolton would be under a new name and ready to play in the 10th tier next season. The EFL could've communicated with the PFA to get a deal done for Bury to be saved.

EFL announcement on 15:31 - Mar 20 with 3511 views | JackFish | Cancelling the season with 3/4s of it already played is not an option. It'll get finished it's safe to do so (maybe behind closed doors) and then depending on when that is next season might have to be truncated - maybe everyone only plays eachother once instead of home and away and/or there's no league cup or trophy.
