Was at Hyde Park last night for a fantastic reunion gig of the Libertines, superb stuff. Both daughter, Katie and I took turns flying a QPR flag close to the stage and at one point when the band was asked to stop playing due to crowd safety fears Doherty took to the drums and started playing the White Stripes Seven Nation Army and started singing, yep you guessed it. 'Ohhhhhhhhh Bobby Zaaaaammmmmmmorrrrrra! Quite a few fellow R's joined in and many came over to us after seeing the flag. Doherty also gave praise to a few including Queens Park Rangers. He may have had his issues and may still do and is certainly not everyone's cup of tea but he is one of us and it was great to hear that chant again! They are playing too more gigs at Alexandra Palace at the end of September. If last night is to go by then I recommend going. Got my tickets secured on the pre-sale last night.
Agree with the sentiments expressed in both the opening posts all except for the 'banging music/superb stuff'' verdicts. Always want to enjoy his music more than I do,seeing as I admire a lot of his influences such as Tony Hancock and The Kinks. Find him weak half-cocked & half-hearted,doesn't sing powerfully or well, not much of a guitarist. No strong melodies or harmonies.Very poor uncharismatic stage prescence. No especially clever or memorable lyrics. Each to their own, mind.
I'm all for legalizing drugs as long as there is much more government money and availability for rehab schemes and protection and care for minors. I would allow PD in the LR khazis to jack up at half-time if he was so minded. So long as no kids could see and he had a minder on the door. From what I hear and read you can actually live a long time taking heroin,so long as you take enough measures to avoid over-dosing. I can never see him being motivated enough to doing the full cold turkey &/or Narcotics Anonymous 12 steps rehabilitation programme successfully or permanently. He's got enough readies not to tealeaf for it so why not just let him get on with it?
"She knows her Rodneys from her Stanleys.." maybe his best ever line?

More like 20StoneOfHoop now.
Let's face it I'm not getting any thinner.
Pass the cake and pies please.

Tell you what the people who slate Pete Doherty as being a j***** cnt. To me he's just a troubled sensitive geezer trying to make his way in life and making some big mistakes. Ain't that the same of the rest us ?
The geezer's got musical talent that most of us would die for but just cos of that don't mean his heads right.
Thing is alot the people who slag him, how many of them have gone out with Kate Moss ? None I reckon.
Anyhow he's Rangers and we should all be sticking together cos it's not like supporting Scum Man U te Scouse gits etc it's a way of life and sets us apart.

Michael Gove and Toby Young are meant to be 'us' too and I wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire.

Yeah fair enough. To me it's different Pete Docherty had a fanzine so was more than proper. Thing is he's not taken a political stance, he's just fcked up. I tell you what he's had some harsh lessons - I know how'd feel if I knocked off some girl when off my nut and Kate Moss left me cos of it - gutted to the N'th fckin degree and some
I don't really know the politics of the chaps you've mentioned but if it was in juxtaposition to my world view I'd still give them more leeway cos there Rangers. To be fair as far as I know at least one of them are Jonny come lately s that only go cos of their Son.
So in actuality are far game to be cnted off whatever.
The bloke won a young poet of the year award given out by the British Poetry council, he edited a QPR fanzine aged 14, he's been in a very popular and successfully rock and roll band (where he wrote most of the stuff) and he managed to go out with Kate Moss for a couple of years.
Whether you like him, loathe him, have a deep seated envy of him, or don't give two hoots about him, to say he is "talentless" seems blatantly untrue and a bit silly.
Thing is that I reckon given a copy of your book he would give it a chance and read it and not dismiss it as a piece of drivel written by some talentless vvanker. Doherty as other posters have given examples of does have talent and I suspect that alot of his own issues come down to a lack of self-confidence as is the case with a lot of very talented people. His love of QPR is like ours, an obsession that sees him mention the R's during concerts, wear QPR scarves and even sings about the club. Even Mick Jones never went that far.

Ahem. Mick Jones does wear QPR scarves, see my Avatar on WatRB's. I also met him at the 1st division promotion bus parade outside the 'Goldhawk' as it was. Resplendant in QPR scarf tied around his waist. He attend virtually all Home games (By Xmas last season he'd only missed Brighton) and a good few Away's.
He has inserted QPR references in a few songs. London's Calling ! Just listen to the fade out at the end. also a couple of examples with his more recent band Carbon/Silicon - Gangs Of England, and there's another but the title escapes me atm.
And he produced both Libertines albums, which means he played a pretty big part of their success. to be fair, I like them both. and The Cure (Smith), and Matlock, and Wendy James, and Betty Boo. and Bill Bailey's very clever.....musically.

Wasn't slagging Mick off in any way as he is one of my few musical heroes, however certainly was never wearing a scarf at the Lyceum in 1981 when I saw the Clash for the one and sadly only time! Didn't even know he was a Ranger at that time either! Have seen him a few times down in the concourse in the SAR and never doubted his commitment to the cause, but Doherty's obsession is immense. Role on 28th September at the Ally Pally!

Fair points, other than I'm not sure it's actually a talent to go out with Kate Moss.

I'll make no apologies here. My book has got bugger all to do with it. As 18st said, musically he is at best, ordinary, I couldn't care less if he is a smack head, or follows Rangers. Baby Shambles are fukkin awful. The musical equivalent of pizzing into a bucket.
