I take your point that the stats may appear slightly biased given Gylfi has predominantly featured higher up the pitch than Jonjo. I do believe that to seriously entertain the idea that Shelvey would play the AM role better is a bit obtuse.
I've been a fan of Jonjo. I think he's given us that tenacious, nasty bite that we've probably lacked since Bodde. He has moments of brilliance (most of his goals seem to be worldies; when his hollywood, Gerrard-esque cross-field passes come off) but more commonly these days moments of sheer frustration. He's only 22 so still has plenty of time to grow and learn. For me he had 3 key passages of play against Southampton - obviously his goal, the shot off the post and the ball through to Gomis in the first half. Apart from that I thought he was a bit of a passenger and his performance in the midfield 3 was overshadowed by Fulton who was brilliant given it was only his 2nd Premier League start.
I think it's fair to say that our system requires a certain type of player. Hardworking, determined and most importantly intelligent. I'm not 100% sure Shelvey is a perfect fit for our system. But then again he scored on the weekend and got us an unlikely 3 points, that's the Jonjo enigma. |

Interesting that the only report of this is coming from the Evening Post. Getting linked to a player like this usually does the rounds before getting that far. Less likely to be an opportunistic agent sowing seeds for a high profile move which is usually the case when stories like this break on Sky Sports News or a tabloid.
A Defensive Midfielder, played in 4 of Colombia's 5 World Cup matches, captain for his club... could be a fantastic signing. Here's a little bio taken from the FIFA World Cup 2014 website:

The people listed in my above post are alleged to have received money directly from Zaragoza. It is then further alleged that those 10 people distributed that money as bribes. So Jeff could've indirectly received money from Zaragoza.
This is from the BBC article.
"Prosecutor Luzon filed the case at a court in Valencia on Monday. The court document alleges Herrera was one of 10 people who withdrew tens of thousands of Euros funded by Zaragoza in order to pay bribes.
Montero's alleged involvement is not described in the prosecution case."

It appears (if allegations are found to be true) that Ander Herrera is in a much worse position than Jeff. The report specifically describes Herrera's involvement in that he personally received money from Zaragoza (with which is alleged to have been distributed to other members of the team) to throw the game. Montero's actions (although mentioned as having played) aren't as deeply scrutinised in the report.
“To this end it was established that 965,000 euros was paid to players of Levante in exchange for them allowing Zaragoza to win the game”.
He continued: "In executing this agreement, on 17 and 19 May 2011 the adviser of Zaragoza and financial director of the club, Francisco Javier Porquera, ordered the transfer from the account of Zaragoza the amounts of money to the accounts of Antonio Prieto, Javier Aguirre and these players: Lanzaro, Ander Herrera, Toni Doblas, Paulo da Silva, Braulio, Ponzio, Gabi, Jorge Lopez and Diogo".

I do find it funny that Moses has come out of this looking like the victim. Hartson has more than likely been forced to apologise by the BBC and I think there was a lot of media pressure on Monk to apologise for what was deemed "heat of the moment" comments.
Where is the apology from Moses? It's pathetic. |
