V Bristol he looked at least a stone overweight and struggled. I can’t see him making the grade at Championship level without several good seasons in L1. Sad, but honest.
When Potter was here, Grimes played defensive midfield, central midfield and left back alongside several Premier League quality players who directing and coaching younger player during games. When he became captain and the senior players moved on he should have taken that role of on-field coach but that has been beyond him. Only toward the end of Martin's time did we see him acting like an on-field captain. As captain and central midfielder he should be commanding and a lynchpin in our play, he's neither. He's generally been competent in a passive way but he has never been quick. Giving the ball away and ten working hard to get it back was a common feature of his play under Cooper; many fans applauded winning the ball back as a positive and ignored the fact he'd lost possession. Potter's side was active and fluid so space was being created for passes and runs. We also spaced our formations deeper in defence and looses across misfield … all created space.
All Swansea players should be able to control the ball immediately and pass to a player in space. The problems our CBs have no one to pass to. Our midfield is static. Has anyone worked out how many goals came directly from fluffed passing at the back last season?
Darling is our weak point in the back line of three or four and B Cooper isn’t anywhere near the standard needed. We either need another left sided CB to take pressure off Wood and Cabango or fast track Ben Blythe. ps. If Cbango is so poor how do all independent valuation site consistently lost him as our highest value player and people who have played CB or know something about football rate him highly?
Piroe? After last week and this his value will have fallen again. His conversion rate isn’t great and contributes few assists. £9 million would be a good return. If My'kola does the business Piroe will find himself sidelined and a big pay day for him and us will have disappeard. I don’t think he will impress Duff. Cabango. £12 millionHigh value and not enjoying his football, should be looking for more suitable club. Wood?Low return and decent enough. £4.5million. He'll have plenty of work this season so if he gets some consistency he could see his value and pay rise. Grimes? £6 million would be a fantastic price for a 28 slow year old.
We only showed courage in the final 20 minute so where is the cowards comment coming from? As for Duff fitness comment it sounds like the same mantra as Monk managed to bet the squad fit to run marathons but incapable of playing football for 90 minutes. If he wants headless chickens running for the whole game I can’t see why we have brought indecent footballers. It also means our under 21s who are playing lovely possession football will be disadvantaged when the are required to step up. As always I think a new manager needs to be given until the end of September but the indications so far are not positive.
Martin spent nearly two season trying to impose a style that was beyond his ability but players turned it into a winning formula toward the end. Duff looks like he will also spend much time coaching out the pervious style. Hopefully the quality of player will overcome the kick and rush approach. This reminds me of Monk. He got rid of our continental style for an English style but couldn’t coach the players to be better at it than other sides. End3d up taking 6 seasons to iron out the legacy. Where
Same tactic as all games from Oxford to today. It might work in L1&2 and against weak Championship teams but it just plays into other teams' hands. We eventually came back against Brum when we started passing the ball.
