TODAY V BRAINTREE TOWN
at 19:36 28 Sep 2024

They looked to force us down the other wing - their manager says this was their tactic in his interview. We weren’t quick enough to shift it back his way to throw them off how they were set up.

Apart from the time Rodney came infield and created something different and we scored. That it happened so early and we didn’t look to recreate that was strange. The only other option to get it out right was a longer ball from defenders and Braintree then doubled up on TAR. It won us a few thrown ins and then we switched the wing backs over.

Credit to the opposition for this but also we need to have better options centrally to create space out wide. If not, that’s when we have to slow everything down and it’s kept too long at the back.

Rochdale sign Hogan

Hopefully not as erratic and temperamental as Branston was during his spell at Dale.

Hogan’s made a good start though. Hearing cheers for a defender winning a header and then clearing a ball was a throw back to better times!

Yeah, the subs lifted us at various stages. At least McNulty’s interview acknowledges we were below par, midfield aside his main contribution to that is finding a different set-up at times. Switching the wing backs isn’t one of them!

He does want us to play like that, but with the pace seen in those games and in the goal we scored. He has to find different formations within games that will disrupt the opposition.

As Ferguson illustrated when he did go longer, especially in the second half, it creates situations that the other team have to defend. That’s chaos theory.

The lack of midfield and forward options for a pass was visibly having an effect on defenders. Those further forward and their manager have to come up with better solutions when we can’t go wide. And that includes the free scoring Mitchell especially.

Midfield options were limited today. Neither East or Burger impacted the game enough and the lack of movement there and ahead ensured a ponderous build up for too much of the game. We look a functional side when we retain the ball but we look a good side when we play with pace. Playing without pace will allow the opposition to gain confidence and fair play to Braintree who caused us issues down the sides.

The formation will have to be looked at soon, Rodney’s part in the goal illustrated how much more he can contribute when playing centrally. Apart from that he’s on the periphery too much.

Really liked the short glimpse we got of Hogan. Headed it, battled and cleared his lines. Think we’ve seen the option to bring him on to see out games either in a back five with Gordon going to RWB or in a change to a back four with the wider central defenders becoming full backs. Unfortunately with midfield options low, Gordon had to go in there today and not sure he’s able to do that. We need Henry back soon or another short term option will need to be looked at.

A 6/10 performance, an 8/10 result.

If Ferguson can stay fit he has all the attributes to be a good central defender. I checked his games last season, bar a poor display against Oldham when out of position, he featured in some good wins - York away for example.

McNulty needs to show the confidence in him afforded to Sassi. Hogan can fill the gap as back up and if performances drop, he’s a solid replacement.

Trust chair steps down.
at 11:45 25 Sep 2024

There have been a series of concerns around the meandering nature of aspects of what the Trust do. Not always their own fault, especially when a lot relies on the club, but it’s clear processes and effective, detailed communication remain an issue. The latest postponement in the Fan Engagement schedule, added to a series of delays over the last year, being a perfect (and avoidable) example of this.

The remaining Trust board have to use this time as an opportunity to decide what the future direction is of the Trust and how that fits alongside what is happening at the club.

The AGM is usually held in November, that is also an opportunity for members to have their say too.

We do however have a real problem in midfield in the short term with East the only recognised central midfielder available. Burger did well there last night though, so maybe he can fill in again.

Will have to wait and see how serious Gilmour’s injury is.

Our most professional display of the season so far. Really hope displays like this are remembered after our next defeat.

Yes, the manager has a responsibility to ensure we don’t lapse back into being slow and ineffective. But there’s no doubt we don’t have that as our preferred way of playing. We want to pass quickly into forward areas but we need to try and eliminate falling into the trap of becoming ponderous in our own third.

Ferguson’s presence may be the main influence on this.

He was visibly struggling after a challenge near the touchline. Ankle or foot at a guess.

Burger did well in midfield though after that. Industrious to the point we didn’t have a real problems after the substitution.

We managed the game excellently, especially after the break when they chucked everything at us with little quality. Bided our time and then got the second.

He played there in our game at Fylde last season and played well.

Talking of those playing well, Ferguson has been good so far. His recovery after a Gordon mistake in the first half was crucial.

Meeting postponed. Little explanation as to why but the mention of “ working towards a new date and format” stands out.

A format they knew hadn’t worked very well before yet were persisting with. Hopefully this will mean an in person meeting that can be broadcast on YouTube like the forums.

Would like to put in record that without George’s efforts the Trust and the Football Club would not be where they are today.

Thanks for all your work.

Start a thread about hoof balls. The point is, as seen by the Huddersfield goal and Mitchell’s yesterday, that passing in dangerous situations leads DIRECTLY to a goal. No chance to defend it afterwards.

It’s not a case of demonising retaining the ball at the back, starting every attack from the keeper to a defender or even the age old playing it about slowly between defenders who don’t go forward. It’s doing it under so much pressure that any mistake will inevitably result in a goal.

At the moment that’s been lost in translation. Hopefully now it won’t be.

Looking across the whole game though, there would need to be another generational shift. One which occurred to see this start in the first place.

I’m not against playing the ball about in defence retaining possession rather than a hoof forward, it’s when it’s done with far too much risk attached. It would require that risk being publicised in the way xG/possession percentage etc are on MotD, Super Sunday, Monday Night Football et al.

That’s when there will be a real understanding of what is wrong and why.

It’s not just on here that people have pointed out how trying to avoid avoidable goals - it’s heard on other forms of social media, often with much more vitriol attached. It’s also forgotten how the old days of fans muttering discontent on the terraces and in the bars at the club before and after games is still a thing. It’d be naive to think the club aren’t aware of it.

This thread, whilst obviously being pertinent to Dale, was actually an attempt to illustrate how this is an issue that exists across the entire game and one that is being mystifyingly being ignored despite the substantial impact it is having on results.
We can all rightly call out McNulty and his players when we fall foul, but imagine if another manager comes in from the same school of thinking that appears to dominate football across the world at the moment.

Can fans across the country make ‘avoidable goals’ a thing? At some stage, someone has to. And when they do I’ll have already trademarked ‘aG’.

Actually, Chaff and co can have it and distribute all future revenue amongst forum users.

And yet all these managers and new experts on Twitter etc fail to discuss the xG against information when passing unnecessarily around their own penalty areas (see the other thread). They all think they’re cleverer than the normal fan.

If anything, in a lot of cases, the opposite is true.

There isn’t one. So in the absence of that, some examples of clubs everywhere not adhering to the old mantra of “get rid” when under pressure. Feel free to add as the season goes on.

As well as Mitchell’s goal yesterday, here’s one from Huddersfield v Northampton:

Nothing will change in the short term, but there will come a day when the game will realise how much it’s impacting success.
