It's an easy way to win plaudits from the hard of thinking.
There are many reasons to criticise ownership. Lack of spending isn't one of them. We've consistently spent right up to (and lately over) our limits. The figures are there in black and white for free on the Companies House website.
Football fans never want to spend less, even those who support a club that's nearly gone to the wall twice for overspending as we have. The absolute last thing we should be doing if we're already £13m in hock is spending more.
If Martin is grumbling about having no money perhaps he needs to consider why we spent the best part of £2m on a defender and keeper we didn't need. [Post edited 23 Aug 2022 17:27]

This latest narrative that we are somehow hard done by is just ludicrously out of touch with reality. We have a budget and spend money that most of the league can only dream of. Some haven’t spent a single penny in years on transfers.

Looking at those lists it incredible the difference in spending between the two South Wales clubs, especially considering they currently sit in the top half.
Of course a long way to go and also not sure of the market value comparisons of both squads if sold, but think Morrison has achieved a decent squad for not much outlay ( not sure about wages and agents fees though) |  |

Some clubs have not received much at all from sales so it's very relevant.
Not trying to defend Russ but painting a false picture is pointless. |
We'll need to sell a Downes/Rodon every season to maintain the sorts of spending most fans/managers seem to expect. The DJ and McBurnie money mostly went to pay off outstanding bills from the PL, since the first summer firesale didn't recoup nearly enough to cover it.

Yes I agree but just showing transfer fees spent doesn't tell a us much either.
If we sell Piroe and Downes that could be close to 25m combined.
Just showing net spend without fees received and wages is a bit lobsided.
How much do you think the likes of Rotherham, Cardiff, Preston and Luton for eg have received.
My guess would be you could combine the 4 together and it would be less than us.

He said we leaked goals because the defenders he had weren't good enough.
Some of us said we leaked goals because of his ludicrous 'system'.
So Martin then chose to buy two centre backs leaving him with...

Bennett, - freezed him out

...and we are still leaking goals like buggery.
If he had continued to play Bennett he could have saved 1 transfer fee and 1 wage.
He could have used that money to purchase a Right-Wing-Back.
If he had chosen to play a flat back four and keep what he had that would have left him with...

He could have used that money to sign a right-wing back and left wing-back with pace (so we had options to play them on the wing if the situation required or switch to Martin's system if he thought 4 at the back wasn't working)...and enough left over to purchase a centre-midfielder (so we had Grimes, Allen, Fulton and another).
We'd be in a far healthier position.
If he had kept Hamer and gave Benda his head he wouldn't have needed to sign Fisher...saving us £400k transfer fee and £10.5k a week.
More than enough to have loaned a decent young Premier League striker for the season to put pressure on the front two.

Taking all of these things into consideration, even the most one eyes Russell Martin fanatic should be able to admit that he is an extremely privileged manager in this division.
In the top 10 in assets, spend, budget, squad value, average player value, salary - you name it.
To pretend all he can muster is 15th and 20th and is so hard done by financially is a joke and does our club a massive disservice.
Sadly it’s becoming RussellMartin FC and not Swansea City FC.
People are becoming more than happy to run the club down if it saves Russell some blushes, the bloke with no affinity to the club and probably couldn’t care less the minute he’s out the door. | |

Because it doesn’t represent reality.
That means under Cooper we should have come bottom of the league with a net spend of -£48.54m.
And someone like Rotherham should finish well above us with a spend of zero.
Money spent, combined with squad value is a far greater indicator than “net spend”. Net spend doesn’t tell us anything at all.
(Russell’s figures updated, I missed something off).
An example of net spend meaning nothing is Brighton. They sell Ben White for £52.65m, a ludicrous sum, they then go and spend that on Cucurella £16m (who is a better player probably).
That transaction has strengthened them yet their net spend is -£36.65m.
Cucurella then being sold for close to £60m to Chelsea.
Net spend is a fallacy.
If your transfer spend is in the top 10, you squad value is in the top 10, your salary budget is in the top 10, your value per player is in the top 10… you better be aiming for top 10.
With us it’s more like top 8.
