Agreed. Think Rednapp has made us quite a solid looking outfit over the summer with some sturdy buys. But what we really need now is a sprinkling of stardust. I've always thought that to stand the best chance of getting out of this league you usually need that one player who is just got too much quality for this level aka Merson at Boro and Pompey, berkovic at man city, taarbat for us last time, et al. Barton certainly has been excellent as has Junior but think we really need a little bit more quality in the attacking third. Think someone like Oussama Assaidi or Phillips would be a good starter. We also need a striker with good movement and excellent track record, as fear how many games we are going to get out of Johnson; becchio would be excellent addition for this role. Agreed regarding needing a left back and an athletic center half. [Post edited 21 Aug 2013 12:09]

I said that he deserves a second chance because it is better that then having us burn cash on a player who doesn't get a look in for 31/2 years. |

My answers: 1. Boswinga was good when we played Chelsea but yes he has been crap for us in other games. I would attribute this to him not caring less then a lack of talent. Bosingwa is better going forward then Onuoha -- who I concede has been excellent recently and really made the position his to lose -- and showed at the latter part of last season for Chelsea that he can defend. I think if you can fix his head, if you can make him realise that it is either accept rednapp or not play for 3 1/2 years then maybe the situation can be rescued and he plays well enough to attract another buyer. 2. Hogan backed Bosingwa and we don't know what is going on in the dressing room. The dressing room argument appears to be supposition. 3. I agree principles are important, however, who is the winner if he just creams 65k a week for 3 and half years. I fail to see the principle that we are winning. [Post edited 1 Jan 1970 1:00]

I think we all agree that players have too much power in modern football. Tevez, Rooney etc are amazing situations. However, at least the aforementioned unlike Bosingwa were assets that other clubs would want. Bosingwa isn't. He is on an overly inflated wage and a long contract. January showed that we're stuck with him. What is the point of cutting our noses off to spite our faces to prove a point of principle that we all know: that players have too much power. In an ideal world we would have cancelled his contract. We can't, hence we might as well try and utilize him. I am not suggesting we should all cheer him blindly as soon as he gets in the team. All I'm saying is he is a decent player who may have something to contribute so let's give him another chance to prove himself. He should be in the QPR squad. [Post edited 1 Jan 1970 1:00]

I think it is definitely worth giving Boswinga another chance. He is on 65k a week, is a Portuguese international with a proven pedigree and played well for us -- okay only in one game against Chelsea but it does demonstrate that when he cares he can be a useful player. I remember what Hogan tweeted dismissing the rumors in the newspapers of his obnoxious behavior. If Rednapp thinks he can get something out of him then I don't see why we as fans can't just move on. We need all the quality we can muster... [Post edited 1 Jan 1970 1:00]

I don't understand the whole Rubin rumor as I thought they had transfer embargo on them due to unpaid wages. Though I guess that may not be enough to stop them... [Post edited 1 Jan 1970 1:00]

| Forum Reply | Carvalho & Richard Dunne at 13:38 18 Jan 2013
I would go for Dunne over Carvalho as I would have reservations about Carvalho. I presume he is likely to have sympathy with our very own Winston Bogarde, Bosingwa, through there association with Portugal and Chelsea and feel that would be extremely counter productive for team morale. I also think we've got our reserve experienced center back for the window, ben tal haim, and wonder if it is worth gambling on a bit of an unknown commodity who would be willing to stick around if relegated like the Norwegian kid Southampton have recently been linked to,Vegard Forren. Agreed. Thought Onouha played well and to some extent nullified the threat of Suraz when pushed central. Difficult to learn anything from yesterday's performance but I really do feel we look a lot better playing three at the back. |
| Forum Reply | Mike Rigg has left the building.. at 00:01 21 Dec 2012
I think getting rid of Rigg may be a good decision. I liked the role he played at the club. Clubs like WBA have demonstrated the medium to long term value and stability that a technical director can provide -- something that we most certainly need. Especially if in the short term he can provide some craft in the transfer market. The way the last regime treated people left a lot to be desired. It demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding of the culture of the club to sack, arguably, a club legend like Kevin Gallen by email -- for starters what message does that send to the current playing staff. This is pure superposition, however, I imagine it was Rigg who made these decisions and if he is to blame then this is a good decision. I hope we find someone else to replace his role. Someone with as impressive a CV but who also has a regard for the culture of the club. I wouldn't be surprised if there was more to decision then what initially meets the eye. We don't have the choice to think long term. We have to go for a proven track record. If we get relegated; the board will leave; we will be left with crippling wage bill; we have to stay up. Rednapp offers the best hope of this even if it is not long term thinking. We don't have the luxury to think long term. |
| Forum Reply | redknapp at 11:57 23 Nov 2012
Yes but it is the manner of Hughes appointment is the issue: not interviewing other candidates and assessing their visions for the long term was born out of short term necessity to act quickly and bring someone in who could keep us up. This same process of anointing successors will hopefully see Rednapp announced imminently and this is again due to the short term problem not allowing us to assess managers long term visions for the club. |

Northern I totally agree about the structure of the club and I think Ollie coming back would have been great -- appreciate never going to happen now that he has just joined Palace. However, in our current situation and facing inevitable relegation we need someone with a proven pedigree. Rednapp has a track record of getting a bunch of journeymen foreigners to play together and keeping teams up. We can't afford to take a risk of an unproven manager at doing this which would, as you said, address the fundamental long term problem facing the club. We have to appoint short term again -- as we did with Hughes -- to save us from the potential destruction of relegation. As I believe that TF and the board would walk. Any other appointment is too great a risk. I also think that no one had any idea that Hughes would have been such a disaster. |
| Forum Reply | He's gone! at 11:38 23 Nov 2012
Hughes is unemployable after the job he has done with us. He was given full backing by a supportive board and it was a total disaster. This after walking out on Fulham for "lacking ambition (money)". No chairman will trust him ever again. |

Yes strange timing but think they must have been waiting for acceptance from Rednapp and hence why announcing today. |
| Forum Reply | So disappointed Hughes hasn't gone yet at 13:31 21 Nov 2012
Presumably we're in talks with Rednapp and will only sack Hughes once it's a done deal. I think it is interesting that Fernandes hasn't voiced any public support for Hughes post Southampton which suggests to me that Hughes is gone but they want to have a replacement in before he leaves. |

Totally agree. Shocked he didn't add another midfielder yesterday. It was clear that we needed one and we only got back into the match when Reading faded -- probably the effects of 120 mid-week minutes of football -- and talented individuals, like Taarabt, started to use their virtuoso skills. Reading are one of the worst teams in this division. We shouldn't be "just" failing to beat them by having a "better" second half or we're not going to stay up... |

Hughes has to go. This result was shocking and totally inept. The formation Hughes chose never gave the undoubted talent we have in the team the platform to go out and win this. We were clearly losing out in midfield and he never addressed this. Also are we doing defensive set piece training as I have never seen a team as weak as we are at them. We didn't win a defensive header all day and we are shipping a lot of goals against teams due to our inability to defend them. Not good, especially when we're about to play stoke! |

Think you're being harsh on Hoilett. He doesn't get the ball where he is dangerous. Was playing far to deep and in the middle. I would have loved to see him in a posisition where he could take on Shorey more. This was the underlying problem with most of the day. The players are very good but are not getting the ball in the right places. We were totally bossed in midfield and Derry and Faurlin should have played. This is Hughes fault. Our formation isn't brining out the best of the talented players we have on the pitch. Hughes doesn't know were to play Hoilett to utilsie his undoubted quality. Even Keen did. This point is true with many of the other players -- Granero is wasted playing as deep as he is. |
