Oldham game 23:20 - Jan 31 with 25585 viewsonedalefan

As the decision regarding the state of the pitch is down to the match referee and, out of the last three games, two decided it was playable and one didn't, at what point do the club get the pitch inspected by the referee appointed for Tuesday to decide whether, in his opinion, the game can go ahead. Do they get a local referee who comes to a different decision. Don't leave it until 90 minutes before the kickoff when the match referee arrives.

Showed Dale up for being so lightweight, a big failing in Jim's teams. One Calvin Andrew would have contributed more than Mitchell and Rodney did together tonight.
Why oh why do we sign 6 or 7 samey midfield whippets when we need some muscle and grit for a game like this, games which will occur regularly in this league. Something MRKT clearly can't get its head round. Where is the Gary Jones type leader?
Going backwards (literally!) to the tippy tappy sideways backwards at the back in the second half when we're losing, and tippy tappy around the opposition box instead of firing a few shots in - bewildering.
Oldham have a corner with 2 minutes to go. We STILL don't leave a man up (Allarakhia would have been ideal) to give the opportunity of a punt / breakaway to equalise because the "coaching manual" says different. Bewildering.
Jim says we didn't play with enough passes - there was so much time wasted messing around passing the ball at crucial points in the game instead of acting incisively. Other tactics are available.
Apparently "the tension got to us tonight". Why? That should have been dealt with by the manager. "The tension" didn't get to Oldham.
Poor post-match by Jim. Blaming a pitch they lost on and Oldham won on isn't a viable excuse.
Jim has the potential to be a good manager but he is so slow to learn from mistakes we can all see and are discussed between friends post-match far too often.
A wake up call indeed.

Pretty much sums it up.

Mitchell and Rodney could do worse than watch the 90 minutes together and honestly assess there own performances v Fondop who was excellent for Oldham.

Dale started great and Mitchell has a glorious chance and doesn't even hit the target? Then lots of neat creating passing / running off the ball for the opening 7 minutes (SEVEN) after that it was 83 minutes or so of Oldham being better than Dale in the running / shooting / battling / tackling / defending aspects of the game.

Big Jim got it badly wrong, the players just seemed to stop believing and that's unacceptable.

Less said about the subs and the timing of the subs the better. Buyabu looked like a rabbit in headlights on the left hand side. The whole side looked miles off last night.. they need to come out of the traps right from the off Saturday thank goodness we get a chance in 4 days to put that horror show behind us.

Good post. McNultys post match interviews are full of excuses that don't stack up...excuses that are spoon fed him by the fella doing the interview, theyre obviously highly censored and no difficult questionsare allowed. Apparently we are a young team and that was one of the problems last night...Hogan, Gordon, Beckwith, Rowlands, East, Gilmour, Rodney, Mitchell, they've all played plenty of games at this level and higher and so have Allarakhia and Henderson on the bench. So it was a poor excuse . There was enough experience throughout the team to deal with a non league local derby, the players should relish games like that. The game was crying out for the introduction of Allarakhia throughout the second half and he seemed to be brought on as some sort of punishment with only minutes remaining. Allarakhia is a player that seems to have lost his way and gone backwards, he's a very talented footballer but it appears as though he's no longer at the forefront of the managers mind.

We more or less surrendered last night well before the final whistle, lacking in ideas, fight and desire. The team needs to man up and McNulty needs to stop making pathetic excuses for them. They looked frightened to death once Oldham got a foothold in the game. A Oldham team that are in a bad run of form and Jim highlighting their budget as a excuse for last night's performance is very poor. Everybody knows that if you stop Fondop you stop Oldham, we give him a goal on a plate in the first twenty minutes and let him have the freedom of Spotland all evening. The goal was simplicity in itself and very predictable before a ball had been kicked. We have to find a ruthless winning mentality from somewhere and McNulty as the manager needs to start sticking his chin out a bit and be more bullish, when you hear him speak it's like he doesn't believe his players are good enough and we should expect to be out fought by teams in the same league as us. The lot of them need to grow a pair and stop looking for excuses to fail.

BJ talks about tension.
He was as hyper as anyone - what was all that running on the pitch to applaud the crowd before the game?
The previous posters have got it right.
Oldham did their homework and must have watched the Yeovil video time and again.
But Dale’s young loanees weren’t allowed to run riot again once the game had settled down.
Seasoned pros like Caprice saw to that.
Latics had a stranglehold on the game after that goal - where was the marking when the corner wasn't fully cleared by the way - and looked serious promotion contenders.
Which Dale certainly didn’t.

Very poor interview from Jim after that woeful performance. Blamed the pitch, blamed our young inexperienced team and blamed Oldham having a bigger budget! One things for sure is if we meet Oldham in the playoffs we aren't getting promoted.

I wouldnt say that DDB.

Play offs should and could be very different. Have we the hunger to grab that last 7th spot and take our chance? I am not convinced.

A real worry last night the performance was miles off but so was the teams body language.

Did we muster a shot in anger on target all night? I don't think we did.

It does you good sometimes to have a good, short, jolt of reality.
At least we know where we stand; it’s alright flogging the likes of ten man Tamworth, Fylde and Yeovil but to gain promotion you need to be at the level that Oldham were last night.
And don’t forget that Latics were dealt a lesson of their own by York a couple of weeks ago.

I think "Oldham did their homework" is key there. We weren't great and didn't create a great deal, but all credit (much as it pains me) goes to Oldham for completely outthinking us and being tactically better.

They knew we couldn't deal with a physical threat, they cut off all our passing lanes and we just couldn't adapt. Fondop was everywhere and we could do nothing about it.

We tried to establish ourselves and play our game which we did at parts, but Oldham just sat and said "come on then, outmuscle us" which was never going to happen.

That said, what an awful team they were to watch - lumping it forward, dirty, niggly fouls but dropping like a sack of spuds to con the ref at every opportunity. You can tell Mellon is their manager.

The whole officiating team were shocking too.

Allarakia had a shot on target when he came on in the 88th minute. I think that was it for shots on target.

On reflection, I thought Oldham were superior all over the pitch, and had been motivated by their Manager beforehand. Sadly, our team performed like 11 wet lettuces and Jim's post match interview was as wet lettuce as it gets. Get a bit of fire in yer belly Jim ffs. We all know we can do so much better than that. Apologise to the supporters and tell us they will do much better.

On to Saturday now, and fully expecting a resounding win and a reaction from everyone on and off the pitch.

Unfortunately, the manager has built a team which plays in a way which isn't aligned to being tough, gritty or angry.

I didn't see one single challenge from any of our players last night that I thought epitomised a derby match or desire to actually win the ball. Why didn't anyone go and smash Fondop in the first 10/15 minutes? Oh yeah, for some reason our manager tasked Harvey Gilmour with marking the most dangerous player on the pitch (It certainly wasn't any of ours!).

The referee was the most card shy official I've seen at Dale for a long time and yet we didn't take advantage.

Frustrated more than anything. We're a soft touch and showed absolutely no effort to make the evening remotely difficult for Oldham.

The really big statistics this season so far are the results against the top 6 sides.

Out of the 6 games played we have scored 2 goals and conceded 5, won 1, D1 and Lost 4.

This sums up where this team is this season. Fine in defence but woefully short in attack and goalscoring in particular. All season we have been short of that 3rd effective attacker.

I don`t know our shots on goal statistic but its a fair bet it is very low.

Team tactics must certainly be mainly responsible for this IMO.

Time for a change J Mc. Your tactics have got us this far, but the fans deserve better.

We've not got the players to change tactics though. Jim has brought in players to play this way. It just showed last night when Waller kicked around 20 long balls direct and Mitchell won absolutely zero of them. Mitchell is great knocking in goals played across the six yard box when our fullbacks have overlapped. He's awful as a target man or holding up the ball or spinning off to make runs. His attempted header at the end should have made it 1-1. It was a great ball in from Buyabu and deserved finishing.

Not much to add to what's been said

Bringing Hendo on as we approach added time doesn't do either him, the team or the fans any favours, but the game was gone by then and it was only Waller who kept it respectable

We're in the pack chasing the last playoff place and really don't think the games in hand will take us into the group challenging at the top. It's far from being disastrous, but tonight showed us where we are in the pecking order
[Post edited 5 Feb 7:20]

I disagree about chasing just the final playoff spot (if that’s what you meant). I think the last three are up for grabs, with only the current top 4 nailed on. Gateshead are a great footballing side, but they’ve lost a few important players in January and that’s starting to show in their results - they should fall away. Similar with Halifax.

I think we’d have to implode spectacularly to miss out on the playoffs, although our record against the top 7 is a reason to believe we won’t do well in them at all.

Bang on Shun.

My worry is that for all McNulty talks about trying not to be one dimensional, the inability to adapt to any difficult circumstances - difficult pitches, difficult atmospheres, difficult opponents - is going to end up being the difference between us going back to the EFL under him or not.

Tangled up in blue.

The irony is that this style of football (playing around teams) should work better against teams in the top 7, who you'd expect to play higher up the pitch. We saw yesterday how some of the line-breaking passes through midfield and into feet can be effective, and find space for opportunities.

However, it's completely irrelevant when that doesn't work and we can't do anything else...

Jim implied in his interview that he did not approve of the long ball used by the team.

Q Why did he not stop them?

I have said many times, we don't score enough goals, too many no scoring draws draws and losses by 1 goal , there is no partnership between Mitchell and Rodney, the latter goes missing in action for long periods of the game, Mitchell has the physical attributes but simply doesnt have an ounce of fire or aggression, put simply, they are easy too defend against, too " nice" . This is professional sport, not a Sunday League game, you expect them to be giving defenders a hard time, physically and mentally, picking up a few yellow cards in the process and using every trick in the book including the dirty tricks to score a goal or create an opportunity for someone else.. Given the chances being provided we should have scored at least 2 goals last night but once again a single goal was enough to see us off.

That's precisely why bringing Hendo on for at least the last half hour was required

At one point, Mitchell broke down our left but i watched Rodney struggling to raise a gallop to get into the box; in fact, he never made it, and the chance went begging

Hendo would've added that bit of professional know-how that was missing

It's great to be optimistic about our chances of getting into the top 3 or 4 but putting all the factors together, we're just not consistent enough and in-game decision-making is lacking
