Cant recall any side relegated from League 2 bouncing straight back,

Some have fallen right thro the NL...County ,Scunny poss others.

Id be interested to know the highest position a side relegated from League 2 have reached in their first season in the NL.

Oldham have done reasonably well all factors considered.

There have been 34 teams relegated from the EFL since the 2004/5 season (Torquay and Grimsby twice).

Of these 3 have bounced straight back into the EFL after one season.

Bristol Rovers relegated 2013-14 promoted 2014-15
Cheltenham Town relegated 2014-15 promoted 2015-16
Grimsby Town relegated 2020-21 promoted 2021-22

4 teams (11%) have gone into administration and no longer exist.

Of the remaining 30, one, Luton Town, now plays in tier 2, the championship, 5 (17%) play in tier 3, EFL1, 8 (27%) play in tier 4, EFL2.

Cumulatively of the 30 teams that have been relegated since 2004/5 and not gone into administration 14 or 47% have returned to the EFL and play in league 2 or higher.

Of the remaining 16, 8 play in tier 5, the National league, and 8 play in tier 6 the National league north or south.

Thanks for that.

Thats 3 more teams than i thought had bounced straight back.

So theres a 50% chance or so we could be back in League 2 within 20 years.....

Well theres something to look forward to ?

Teams relegated from the EFL since 2004-05 and their subsequent league history.

Of these only two teams have had “natural” subsequent relegations after their first season in the National league. These were York City and Scunthorpe this season.

Other teams have suffered multiple league relegations in their first season after being relegated, but these have tended to have been for financial irregularities.

For example, Boston United I believe were relegated from the EFL directly to the National League North as they had not paid HMRC and owed some other clubs money, in the following season they finished mid table but were again relegated as they still had not fully resolved the issue with HMRC before the start of the new season.

Lincoln City relegated 1986/87 and promoted back the following year with 10k crowds. Although they were the only full time team in the non league division at the time.
