Freedom of speech

Or

Inciting hate and intolerance?

Gareth Thomas has put his foot down and said he won’t watch Folau again.

I would only disagree with you to say it’s man’s interpretation of religion that’s the root of so much evil rather than religion itself. The belief in some sort of higher force isn’t the issue, it’s the stuff invented in that belief’s name as a means to obtain wealth and power.

Ok but where did the interpretation come from? Maybe I'm wrong but usually it comes from the clerics, the people tasked with teaching the bible, or preaching it to the rest of us. Seeing as religion was invented by mankind so they could control the masses, to me it is just evil.
Money is evil for the same reasons, it's used for control. That's why the rulers, the Kings and Queens and Emperors have their images put on coins, to remind us all who is in charge and who we owe fealty to.
Churches/religions across the world have exercised control over royalty and amassed vast fortunes, the Vatican is incredibly rich and still collects money from poor people, some of the poorest of people too in South American countries. In Islamic countries merely suggesting the ruling classes are wrong has brought down huge punishments including beheading and criticise the church at your peril too.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

I think your definition of what constitutes ‘danger’ would differ from mine, Lis.

I heard a Scottish Minister thundering something very much like that years ago on Church Parade. We were stifling laughs rather than reaching for burning torches and pitchforks. Half the assembly were guilty of at least two on the list and looked to be heading South.

That’s one post.

In a litany of comments he’s made about gay people being evil.

Including ‘sermons’ that have been published on the Internet.

That post wasn’t what caused the issue ffs.

Why senior, educated people faff around the subject of religion is beyond me. In 2020 people are still trying to justify grown up human beings, believing in fairies and pixies up in the sky.

Yet if someone wants to believe in worshipping Scientology or Satanism, they are labelled as odd balls. What is the difference?

Take this thread alone, absolutely staggering stuff.

But as with most things, too much money swilling around them, for anything to be done about it.

I had no idea there were sermons, I had to go looking for them. It’s nothing I haven’t heard before, he’s like a Belfast street preacher without the oratorical panache.

It’s a cliche, I know, but neither you, I, nor Elton John when it comes down to it have the ‘right’ not to be offended. If you believe in freedom of speech then it means every so often you are going to encounter something that offends you, it’s a price worth paying.

An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

With the caveat that the reaction should always be inside the law! You can be angry, upset etc but should never resort to violence.

I’d have thought that went without saying to be honest but clearly not. So yes, I’m not advocating violence against those whose views I find abhorrent. Just to be clear.

Yeah - I never understand the freedom of speech argument.

The fact that he’s said the things he has proves he has freedom of speech. He’s not been imprisoned. So it’s a nonsense to raise it.

It is perfectly within the rights of private companies, teams, groups, whatever, to refuse to deal with people because of their views. That is also freedom of speech.

He’s a bigot hiding behind his religion. A particularly nasty little bigot at that as he uses his fame to promote that bigotry. Shame on the team that’s employed him. I understand their sponsors aren’t very happy...

The fact you seem to be rubbing your hands together at the prospect of him losing his employment suggests it is a point eminently worth raising.

Anyone who wants to exercise their right to freedom of speech also has to accept living with the consequences.
That's another thing about social media, 40 years ago only people in his area, at his club would have known about his views but thanks to social media we all know he's a bigot. Mind you 40 years ago his opinion would barely have raised an eyebrow anyway. People would either have agreed with him or walked away.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Why? You miss the point.

He’s free to say what he wants. I’m free to think it’s appalling that anyone will employ him. But they have. As is their right. And it’s my right to avoid companies that sponsor a team that employs him.

Freedom of speech has never meant there are not consequences.

People have been barred from pubs for ever. It’s the same thing.

Let's not get sidetracked down the Gareth Thomas route.

The two people concerned are plonkers who should be called out at every opportunity. It's time to stand up to the peddlars of hate all across the world. Here in Spain too, where we have our own brand of Nazis called Vox.

Oh let’s . Publicity whore strikes again. Me me me! I’m sure Folau will be devastated Gareth Thomas won’t be watching him.

As for Folau’s views being “Christian” I’m afraid he’s misguided and fallen into a trap. Christians are not allowed to judge others. This is quite a typical Protestant and Evangelical failure where many believers concentrate far too much on the Old Testament mosaic law and start judging people on that basis.

Love thy neighbour was the message delivered by Christ, as was judge he not for fear of judgement upon thyself. Folau would be viewed but Christ like he viewed the Pharisees. Not favorably.

The irony of you complaining about others being judgemental while making your 50th post criticising Gareth Thomas is not lost.

The irony of you claiming that the Catholic Church is less judgemental of homosexuality than Protestants is even funnier.

You singled out Protestants (which in Christianity terms only leaves Catholics) as judgemental...

Oh no it doesn’t! Anyway Thomas’ sole purpose in life these days is to remind the world that he’s gay. We’ve all heard it. Time to shut up Gar eh

To be fair to Gareth Thomas, it would be incredibly odd if they hadn’t asked him for a view on Folau, given he was an openly gay rugby league player...

As I’ve said before, his job is creating awareness of diversity issues. So keeping quiet about it would be a strange way of doing that job.

Israel Folau / Margaret Court on 22:07 - Feb 3 with 1040 views34dfgdf54

Didn’t the whole thing start with Folau because the head of Australian Rugby brought out a statement saying the Wallabies, who Folau is pretty much the face of is completely support changing the law in Australia to allowing Same Sex Marriage. He stated that he cannot support this due to his religious beliefs and was disappointed Bill Pulver issued a statement on behalf of everyone.

The rest that followed was bang out of order but it should never have been played out in public as it has done. If I remember correctly the Vunipola brothers took some stick a few weeks back for refusing to wear rainbow laces aswell. Just let these guys play sport ffs.

He was openly gay when he played for Crusaders in the Super League.

The first (I believe) openly gay player to play rugby league.

And played for Crusaders in 2010.

Don’t understand your point.

Folau has joined a super league team and Thomas was an openly gay player in super league. So he was obviously going to be asked.

That’s what I was saying. I didn’t say he wasn’t a union player before that or that he wasn’t openly gay when he played union. He was still playing for the Blues when he came out.
