Scottish Independence and Brexit 16:40 - Mar 23 with 2402 views | union_jack | I am totally opposed to the break up of the Union as I’ve made clear on the odd occasion. I do have worries though as to what the best ‘strategy’ would be to minimise an indyref2 success in Scotland. If we are to remain in the EU which is my preferred option, it is likely to be achieved by a second referendum. This will surely set a precedent to the SNP that what’s good for the goose... If we leave, I’ve heard that an indyref2 would be top of the SNP’s agenda with a possible good chance of success. This leaves me to believe that the only option to deter the SNP would be a revocation of A50. Of course, they could hold a referendum whatever the outcome of Brexit and we could discuss and surely disagree amongst ourselves as to the likely outcome. I think it would be too close to call but leaving the EU would be the worst possible scenario. Scotland could then, depending on their referendum result, apply to join the EU. I heard a SNP member in the week disputing the fact that they would have to join the Euro due to the fact(?) that they would have to join the ERM (???) first before the Euro. Apparently this is not mandatory. This may of course be standard SNP bluff. Anyone got any views?

Scottish Independence and Brexit on 17:42 - Mar 23 with 2367 views | Kilkennyjack | The future of Scotland needs to be in the hands of the people who live in Scotland. They chose to remain in the UK on the basis that the UK was in the EU. If Brexit ever changes that then its such a significant change that Indy2 is nailed on and the UK is dead. Simples. Great news for Scotland mind they get to keep their oil, and get to exit from Mogg, Boris, Maybot, Gove, Farage and Davis. Wales on the other hand gets the reverse outcome. Bugger.

Scotland are only in the EU due to being part of the union/ Union votes to leave, sorry to say Scotland votes don't magically count for more than anyone elses. Let Scotland leave. Ok, so need new currency or join Euro, slap tariffs on them given they have no deal with EU and 90% of their trade is with UK and see how long it takes Scotland to come begging back once SNP can't blame others. You missed other parts, like Gibraltar. Could you have a reason for that, given they are teaching your mob how to play football?.

Not really. Scotland are way more dependent upon UK than UK is upon EU.

Gibraltar is only in the EU because it’s a British overseas territory. It voted 90% to remain yet is being dragged out of the UK against its will despite that. And it’s not a part of the UK. Still, the people have spoken. [Post edited 23 Mar 2019 18:01]

The irony is that you have been banging on about wanting WTO rules for ages, and then don’t recognise that they mean you can’t ‘slap tariffs’ on whoever you want. Nor, it seems, that Scotland would be free to trade under the rules you think are so great? It’s pathetic, it really is. People are arguing blind for stuff they have zero understanding of. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Norway invested their oil revenues in a sovereign wealth fund. This began in 1990. It is now worth £460 billion. According to government valuations — based upon current and projected markets — this oil has a total wholesale value of at least £1.5 trillion. It will last for another 100 years. Scotland will boom, no question. EU will welcome them. Good luck to Scotland ✌🾠

Yeah, right. Too late Bluey, you’ve shown you have absolutely no idea what your preferred course of action actually means. How surprising.

And, of course, Wales has plenty also. When we're Independent we'll make a fortune selling it instead of giving it away.

The Government Expenditure and Revenue Scotland (GERS) report has been published for 2017-18. It shows revenues from the oil and gas sector were up by more than £1bn from just £266million in 2016-17. The report said it reflects an increase in total UK revenue from the sector. Despite this, Scotland is still in deficit of £13.4bn which is 7.9% of GDP, and four times of that of the UK as a whole as a result of higher public spending per head. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon unveiled the report this morning. She said: “Today’s figures show that offshore revenue has increased by £1 billion. “These GERS statistics once again make clear the benefit of remaining part of the UK, with an extra £1,576 in public spending per person in Scotland. “Nicola Sturgeon must remove the threat of another vote immediately and focus on the things that matter to the people of Scotland.” [Post edited 23 Mar 2019 20:26]

And the north of Ireland ? And England ? Why not ? Then maybe a modern united kingdom of equal nations emerges ? Imagine that .... The current union is wholly and demonstrably unequal - and therefore in the modern world it will fail. Like the EU, it needs real reform. People will not be able to shout this down, it needs reform. Btw no country that left the old empire ever asked to come back in. Beyond fear is freedom. [Post edited 24 Mar 2019 10:25]
