Dawson may not have been up to it at Championship level but he looked quality at League Two level, so should look decent in League One. He has been more of a box to box midfielder when I've seen him play. He might not be the most technically gifted, but he's good at the ugly stuff. If Dawson can get amongst the opposition and hassle them into making mistakes, the likes of Lund, Hery, Allen & Henderson have the quality to hurt the opposition.
I have no idea if we're even close to signing Dawson, from what you've said about wages it seems unlikely, but I thought the same about Dicker.
I know we won't come up against teams of Boro's quality, I'd be surprised if they miss out on the playoffs in the Championship. My concerns were based around what we did with the ball, there's not an awful lot you can do when a class Championship team are pinging it around and playing keep ball. I'm not a fan of English sides (below the Premier League, anyway) signing foreign players, I think it should be the breeding ground for good English talent, but Kike was a class apart playing the #9 role.
Can't disagree with much of what you've said there, but Dawson doesn't do the ugly stuff well. He really doesn't. Or, perhaps I should rephrase that as "he didn't do it well for us". Trust me, when I quite liked him (under Keith) he was a driving force from the centre of the park, who ran with the ball and liked a shot. But whenever he had to defend he more often than not gave stupid free kicks away on the edge of our box, or got in the way of our defenders.
There's an interview on our website with him some months ago where he was praising Danny for bringing him in from the cold and playing him where he likes, in the middle where he can be (his words) an attacking force and chip in with goals.
Unfortunately, he played shit in the main under Danny, and looking at young Brad Abbott now it pains me to think we had a 19 year old lad with more about him rotting away at Harrogate Town on loan (cheers, Flicker).
Here's a Dawson video, from a minute and two seconds in:
