Saints hierarchy split over RM’s future
at 22:09 2 Oct 2024

If it is to be believed, the article below has surfaced in the last few hours in the Express and the Mirror online editions. It appears Dragan Solak is ready to pull the trigger but the oaf Ankersen is still supporting RM. Sounds like Solak is almost as fed up with Ankersen as he is with Martin. I honestly don’t think it would be bad for SFC if Solak pulled the plug on Ankersen as I feel he has done far more harm than good to our Club since he walked through the door.

The article reads as follows:

Russell Martin's position as Southampton manager is increasingly under threat following the club's dismal start to the season. Despite leading the Saints to promotion via the Championship play-offs last season, the 38-year-old now finds his team languishing in the Premier League relegation zone, having failed to secure a win in their first six matches.

With just one point ahead of this weekend's clash with title contenders Arsenal, another poor result could push Martin closer to the exit during the upcoming international break. While Martin has some credit for last season's promotion, scrutiny is mounting.

Saints owner Dragan Solak is reportedly unimpressed with the results, putting Martin in a precarious situation. As reported by talkSPORT, there is division among the top brass at St Mary's over Martin.

While Solak is concerned about the results, sporting director Rasmus Ankerson, who brought Martin in as head coach last summer, still supports him. However, it's suggested that Ankerson himself is also under scrutiny from Solak, who took over the club in January 2022.

Southampton are currently the lowest-scoring team in the Premier League, having netted just three goals in six games. In contrast, Arsenal have scored 12 goals in the same number of matches and remain undefeated as they pursue their first title in over two decades.

Potter as head coach and Llallana as his assistant
at 16:50 2 Oct 2024

Gents, in the best traditions of many a football committee meeting - point of order Mr. Chairman:
- Hollywood 56 was only making a suggestion
- Potter always taking his assistant Billy Reid with him as part of the package is indeed true.
So, may I propose an amendment to the original suggestion; most managers have a small team around them not just one assistant (as indeed has RM who shipped in more than one other member of the Swansea back room team on arrival) so, my proposed amendment to the original suggestion is Potter & No 2 Reid with Lallana also on board as part of the new coaching team. Hopefully this addresses the issues satisfactorily.

Captain Jack's £50,000 Swear Words Revealed
at 21:03 1 Oct 2024

It is amazing how times have changed. Back in 1978, if you change the middle word of Captain Jack’s outburst from little to Brazilian then you have what the infamous refereee Clive Thomas allegedly called FIFA President João Havelange after he booted him out of the 78 World Cup Finals for disallowing a Brazil goal by blowing the whistle for full time with the ball in mid-delivery from a corner kick. Zico scored but Thomas was having none of it, marching off the pitch waving his arms to signal no goal and pointing at his watch. Brazil would have won 2-1,but as a result drew 1-1. When confronted post match by Havelange and given his marching orders Capt Jack’s (edited) outburst was his alleged initial response.

Welcome back Captain Jack!!!!

In reply to AH - not harsh at all, in fact, quite the opposite. Should have been a four match additional ban under the E rules he was charged under but it has been mitigated down to two games due to his previous good record and pious apology.

Top 3 things about Saints being shit
at 14:53 1 Oct 2024

Three more things

1. Every time we lose, we totally p#ss off every single Leeds fan, all of whom are still seething about the unfairness of finishing 3rd and the 4th placed team getting promoted. My neighbour (who is a Leeds fan) just scowls at me and shakes his head every time he sees me 😂

2. The local pubs benefit from the extra revenue generated by supporters who observe the ‘Three Goal Rule’ and depart the stadium early to head for their chosen boozer thus offsetting the negative affect of the Gulag opening before and after the game.

3. Supporters observing the ‘Three Goal Rule’ may get the opportunity to have a crack at the ‘they are streaming out in their droves’ record currently held by Sheffield United fans after 35 mins of the 1st half in the 8-0 home defeat by Newcastle United last season. We’ve got the entire Top 6 to visit us yet! 😮

Bournemouth Game Matchday Thread

Currently between 16/1 and 19/1 depending on the bookmaker. Arsenal are 11/100 > 7/50.
If that does not sound bad enough, this makes it sound even worse - if someone gave you a free £100 bet on this game and you went for the best odds as it stands now, if you put it on Arsenal and they are successful you’d win £14 and if you put it on Saints and they are successful you’d win £1,900 😮 Gulp…

As the co-commentator has observed, Ramsdale has launched a few long to a team with no recognised forwards on the pitch but with 5 on the bench. You couldn't write a script for it literally - if you did, they'd reject it...

Our Billy Bremner for a few season was Brian O’Neill. I can still see him now holding onto the cuffs of his long sleeved shirt in the palms of his hands when he played - and with his socks rolled down around his ankles and no shin pads!
Sadly, a few years ago he was badly beaten up by some young thugs. Although he pulled through, the incident has robbed him of most of his precious footballing memories from his days with Burnley, Saints and Huddersfield. By the sound of it he was lucky to pull through but it has badly affected his memory.

Played for Saints and Boscombe
at 13:42 28 Sep 2024

Yep, it was near the end of his career, he signed for Bournemouth from Celtic for the 2007/08 season at the age of 35. He made 18 appearances for them in League 1 (17 starts). At the end of the season he went on to Leeds United for the final season of his professional career.

Signed for us in 2006 then went back to Boscombe on loan and played 3 games for them in 2007. Didn’t know that until I consulted Wikipedia 🙂

An excellent Saints manager in his time and I have fond memories of some great games at The Dell and of course 1st May 76. Had the pleasure of meeting him at a London Saints ex-players evening in central London. As he was so good at signing big name players I asked him if there was ever one that got away - Colin Todd was his instant response, apparently his missus flatly refused to move to the south coast so the move fell through. We did talk about what it was like coaching the like of Bally & Keegan and he just smiled and said that he mostly left the tactical side of things to John Mortimore. He reckoned Mortimore was as good as any other coach you could name and better than a few Div 1 managers back in the day - as he pointed out, how many other Div 1 coaches could get the job managing Benfica? Fair point.

How much of a bribe did Man City pay him to move to Arsenal to make sure they go backwards and stop challenging them for the title??

A huge sense of entitlement
at 19:44 23 Sep 2024

Not sticking up for the City player but apparently the reason he didn’t get booked was because the ref instructed the City player to return the ball to where the offence took place, which was a few yards away from where player & ball had come to a halt. Obviously the free kick would be taken by Arsenal from where the offence occurred and the ref motioned to the City player to send the ball back to where the kick would be taken from. Can’t take any credit for spotting it myself, they covered it in the post match analysis on MOTD2 last night 🙂

Dibling makes BBC's, Troy Deeney's Team of The Week
at 14:43 23 Sep 2024

I draw a few crumbs of comfort from the fact Dibling went to a ‘big club’ and disliked it so much he couldn’t wait to come back home to SFC. Maybe, just maybe, he will be our 21st Century Matt Le Tiss and have that same attitude that Matt had when it comes to where he plays his football. In other words, he will play where he wants to play, irrespective of what anyone else thinks. I can remember Alan Shearer talking about Le Tiss staying at SFC on the BBC MOTD Top Ten podcast. He said Le Tiss simply didn’t give a sh#t what anyone else thought, he was completely single minded about playing where he wanted to play, s@d the consequences. Can but live in hope Tyler’s love for SFC that brought him back home so quickly extends on for years to come - fingers crossed 🙂
