| News Comment | The First Bookies Favourite Has Emerged For Southampton Manager at 13:42:05
Lousy time to get rid of Martin - although they probably had no choice. Caught between an appointment for this season with an almost zero chance of staying up & planning for next year in the Championship. Are the likes of Potter & Moyes really going to be interested given our predicament? We were in a stronger position when RH left & the best we could come up with then was Jones. Wouldn't be unhappy to see Rohl back. Or I hear there's a bloke called Selles making a name for himself in the lower leagues. |

Be fair, these days the shout to Holgate had to be “person on” which must take at least half a second longer to get out. Could make all the difference. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Middlesbrough The Verdict at 10:39:11
Don't want to appear over-pessimistic on a Monday morning but I'm beginning to ask myself “what's the point?” I think most people agree that, whether under Martin or another manager, we have a squad that's good enough to make the play-offs. If we achieve promotion what's the prize? A season in the PL with a squad that's far weaker than the one that got us relegated last season. We've lost at least five quality players. Can't see anybody in the current squad stepping up – or SR buying the players we'd need to have even an outside chance of staying up. |
| News Comment | Southampton Fans Want To See Youth Given A Chance In The Last Two Games at 10:31:42
I don't think we'd be doing the kids any favours by putting them in a struggling team against two of the league's form sides. What would it prove? I'd rather limp over the line (hopefully with a bit of fight) & look forward to a really positive pre-season. I haven't heard much about Simeu or Small lately. Are they still in the frame for next season? |
| News Comment | Southampton At Newcastle United The Verdict at 10:41:25
Not so sure that Jones was a panic appointment. Saints liked to tell us that they were continually monitoring prospective managers, so presumably he'd been lined up as a replacement for Hasenhuttl for some time. That's what made it such a desperately bad decision. |
| News Comment | Referee Watch With SFC Ref 20th February at 09:03:48
Any view on Arteta mocking Hooper with his “moving ball†action? I read at the w/e that he could face disciplinary measures but they made a joke of it on MOTD (not surprisingly). |
| News Comment | Ralph Hasenhuttl An Appreciation at 12:11:26
Premier League managers are the elite of their profession. They get there by virtue of a wealth of experience & success at the highest levels (apart from Nathan Jones maybe). They, and their team of coaches, see the players in training day in & day out and do a huge amount of analysis on their opponents. We all like to think we know a bit about football but our knowledge pales in comparison. Whatever decisions management takes are made to give us the best chance of winning. They have more invested in this than any of us. Of course they make mistakes, as any professional does, but team selections (even including Walcott) are made for good reasons. Ultimately it all comes down to results & for that reason alone Hasenhuttl had to go. That doesn't mean he's not a top class manager though. |
| News Comment | It's FA Cup Time For Saints ! But it Doesn't Feel Like It ! at 11:58:41
I find it difficult to get excited about the Cup these days. Not only has it been totally devalued by the over dominance of the PL but we've got virtually zero chance of winning it anyway. The best we can hope for is a couple of good days out. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Brentford Rearranged at 09:55:24
For the past couple of seasons “totting up†suspensions apply to the same competition, so KWP will sadly miss the next PL game. |
| News Comment | Southampton May Yet Make It 9 In The Transfer Window ! at 11:01:36
Back in 2019 Ralph was saying that he wanted to work with a first-team squad of 18-20 with the rest made up of youngsters coming through. We must be some way past that now. I suppose he's just changed his mind after last season's injury list – although that was probably a one-off. |
| News Comment | Who Was To Blame For The Turnstile Fiasco At St Mary's ! at 16:23:49
Two things come to mind: (1) Risk assessment (inc. a contingency plan) (2) Testing This is basic project management. In the context of the business, stadium entry is a crucial system. The situation on Sunday was almost unbelievable. |
| News Comment | Hasenhuttl Gives Southampton Injury Update Ahead Of Trip To Leeds United at 16:30:52
Saves Ralph a bit of a headache. Goal aside, the performance up front against Chelsea wasn't great. Normally I'd always play Armstrong if he's fit but who would you drop to make room? You could make a case for leaving out any of the front four but you could equally make a case for keeping them in. Even if he was fit I'd be inclined to start with Armstrong on the bench. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Wolverhampton Wanderers The FA Cup Verdict at 21:13:09
Thought the same about Moss. Seemed to have a good relationship with the players & easy not to notice him at all. Also a good example of how VAR should work - and not just because all the decisions went our way. |
| News Comment | Opening Day 14th August 1993 Saints V Everton at 12:47:39
"...Southampton has always been a multi cultural city and the crowd at the Dell had always seen a mixture of different cultures and racists..." "racists" or "races"? Hopefully the latter but, sadly, the former may also be true. |
