United Programme
at 20:07 5 Sep 2024

I usually pick up a programme pre-match, scan through it for editorial that I have not already read in the Gazette or club website and typically discard it within five minutes when I don’t find anything new. The club evidently invests little in written media and just regurgitates online content.

Other than as a keepsake for collectors, I see little value in producing printed paper programmes that waste natural resources and create carbon emissions. Then, if the collectors were charged their true economic cost then I suspect few would buy programmes and might start collecting something else. A typical costly London theatre programme perhaps being a fair comparison.

Even large collections of football programmes attract little value at auction. Frankly, I suspect their days are numbered, and I wonder how many are printed for the Jobserve, and how many are then collected within regular stadium waste? My guess is the percentage swept up or in litter bins is thought provokingly high given the conscious need for more sustainable living.

Bees to be stung by the Super U's at the JCS in the Carabao Cup

The ghost of Noah Chilvers continues to haunt us.

Why can’t we ever put a penalty in the corner?

Got to play to the whistle Durham. Referee didn’t give the free kick and we still had opportunity to clear or block it. But we stood off expecting him to blow. Like v Harrogate, we defend poorly leaving a tap in.

Brentford are cruising this without getting above second gear. 79% possession, far more shots etc. Admittedly we have often hoofed or thrown it into their box, but have posed little real threat.

Great support from the faithful and the many glory hunters that we probably will never see again. Some are probably here expecting a goal fest. Let’s hope they are disappointed.

Super U's find the right chemistry to vanquish the Sulphurites at the JCS
at 17:45 24 Aug 2024

Cricket rained off early, so I made an unexpected visit to the stadium.

Possession and shots mean zilch if we don't score. I blame Cowley for the defeat as he takes off Egbo and within seconds we are a shambles at the back and concede. Smash & Grab yes, but we need to be self-critical. We were really poor in and around their box plus their keeper made two world class saves.

I can understand the hand ball penalty not being given, but Tovide was twice dragged down cynically, yet no penalty. We will play far worse and win.

Colchester women’s cricketers have just been confirmed Champions of the Essex Women’s Premier League. Wouldn’t it be great if Col U women made it a double?

If all we get from I-Follow post-match is the same short highlights as those shown on Sky TV then who will bother paying regular monthly I-Follow subscriptions?

I suspect I-Follow will now be seeking fees from the club to post full match replays which the club probably won’t pay given the Sky+ broadcasts. But as it is not easy to remotely record those, we are then left with no access to full match replays.

I predict deadlock. Fans that cannot get to live matches because they live distant or work on Saturday afternoons end up in a worst position unless the U’s is the main Sky+ match rather than a red button option.

Coordinating video and audio on a live stream can be surprisingly difficult. When I live stream Colchester cricket with audio I have to programme in a 3 second audio delay into the software because the audio arrives before the video. Hearing the thwack of the ball too early is really annoying.

This is because in my set-up the video stream arrives over wireless technology (from camera on a distant sight screen) and the audio by cable from a nearer directional microphone. Much of the timing challenge is dependent upon local conditions, local technology and the kit employed. There isn’t an easy fix unless one employs seriously expensive equipment. It might take a few broadcasts before they get the balance perfect.

However, this is a good opportunity for me to apologise to those that regularly follow my live stream for the recent lack of audio. What has happened is that Upminster CC’s live streaming system picked up some disgusting racist comments. The league (rightly) took action and imposed penalties, and some other clubs are now fearful that our microphones are so sensitive a repetition is inevitable, not necessarily racist, but perhaps other comments that are best not broadcast. Some clubs will now only consent to games being live streamed if audio is off.

My personal view is that this is a backward step that allows the bigots and ill-disciplined impunity. Surely the threat of such comments being potentially broadcast is THE best deterrent? In the six years I have been live streaming from Castle Park we have had zero problems, although occasionally foul language is overheard. For the remainder of the season, my broadcasts hence might have zero audio whilst we discuss this at a higher league level. Sorry, but it’s always a minority that spoil good things for the majority.

I typically can’t attend the first five and last two fixtures of the season due to the overlap with cricket. Hence, I purchase an I-Follow subscription to catch up with a full replay next day.

To date, I have not been able to watch any full replays, and now realise that I must locally record Sky+ broadcasts. However, as match selection is locally done via the Sky hand controller, I’ve not found out how to set up the recording in advance, and it’s really frustrating. There also seem to be no “Catch Up” function on Sky (or I-Follow). Very frustrating!

Club Statement
at 08:26 14 Aug 2024

The new drainage channels will be conspicuous for some time as the grass must thicken . But the pitch played fine, with the U’s confidently employing tricks and ball skills, and Reading scoring a candidate for goal of the season. Overall entertainment value was 5/5.

The only downsides, a disorganised “wall” permitting the visitors equaliser, plus the comedy of the sprinklers coming on mid-match and catering prices that have soared. Hollywood Bowl, Slim Chickens, Wendy’s etc are going to be attractive alternatives to the over cooked pie having a crust like a tortoise shell plus chemically enhanced Greene King offering for a £tenner I endured in the stadium.

I counted seven cars ticketed for parking on the Stadium Way clearway, and with three huge HGVs evidently parked overnight in the loading bays, and folk trying to drive into the stadium to pick people up it was chaos leaving the car park post-match. Needs double yellows to remove the uncertainty as current clearway signage is failing. Pre-match, I politely warned somebody in the process of parking that he was certain of getting a ticket . I got a torrent of abuse that I was wrong. I so enjoyed later seeing the yellow ticket on his windscreen. Why are some folk such *****?

Fantastic atmosphere tonight considering only 3,100 crowd (600 Reading). Awesome noise levels from South Stand.

Opening day fixture at Plough Lane

Stewarding was awful last season. Wimbledon employ a bunch of thugs that couldn’t differentiate between high spirited friendly fans and tangible threat. Their unnecessarily excessive violence was appalling to the extent that we old git’s reported them to the regular Police having witnessed shocking scenes. Our kids don’t require being treated like a terrorist mob.

Suggest you eat beyond the ground. Inside, the queues were awful and prices shameful exploitation. I’m not disappointed that cricket commitments mean I miss this one. The low level view behind the goal is one of the worst too. I will enjoy this one on TV

I reckon the pitch will be fine for the opening fixture, but will look ugly. It took almost two years for similar drainage trench markings to vanish at Castle Park Cricket Ground.

Colchester Cricket & Beer Festival
at 06:05 31 Jul 2024

Newly appointed Essex Second XI Scorer, Andy Thurogood, took that Metro Bank Cup gig Bewildered in the absence of First XI Scorer, Paul Parkinson, who has stepped up after Tony Choat’s retirement. I will only provide cover if Essex CCC have both absent or one is absent on a day where there is an overlap of First XI and Second XI fixtures. I am too old to chase around the country every week, so happy to remain as “Reserve Scorer”.

On Sunday, I was hence running the Colchester Cricket & Beer Festival whilst watching Colchester Women beat Hutton CC in a nail-biting Essex Women’s Premier League finish, with one eye on the Essex Live Stream and a real ale in hand.

Col U fans deprived of local football due to the switch to St Neots Town might consider wandering down to Castle Park to watch Essex Premier League Cricket, whilst listening to the 80s Event (Human League, Bananarama, Level 42 etc) being held in the adjacent field, free of charge. Decent bar available, top quality cricket, hopefully sunshine.
