Marti's remarks on the ref
at 15:56 27 Jan 2025

It's the bookings that make the difference as per Clive's report. Ref books our player then doesn't book theirs for a similar offence they can take more risk to tackle or deliberately pull back because they haven't already been booked..

There comes a point where the ref loses control of the match as happened midway through the second half where both sides just fouled each other. I didn't think he had authority over the game which affects the match win or lose.

Paterson also did a number on us. When he got Chair booked by blatantly shoving him off the ball and then went down clutching his face in the ensuing run and tussle down the line I had a bad feeling. The 5ft 7 Chair would have needed a chair to elbow the 6ft tall Paterson.

Just not our day. We looked jaded and they made it really hard to break through their lines.

Our dead ball deliveries were not at their best either so we couldn't get enough pressure on Wednesday. We didn't get enough players in and around their box so Frey was isolated..

Still I think most of us would have taken six points from this week. And we're still on track.

I wouldn't be answering the phone to Brighton if I were Nourry either. Recent incomings apart from Richards have been Tomer Hamed, Jan Mlakar and Kazenga LuaLua. Block them now.

It's only one more season left, isn't it? So at the end of this season if we can't get another loan for him we're probably best paying him off. Honestly it can't be good for anyone to have him hanging round technically on the books.

Ashby throwing the jersey to the floor
at 14:30 22 Jan 2025

I think it's the five year contract, yes, and the big transfer fee. It's disappointing. I'm still hoping he'll become more effective. I haven't written him off. With Ashby I don't want him on even as a sub.

Of course it's all opinions and you're obviously entitled to yours. But just one last thing: both players were on for around fifteen minutes. In that time Ashby gave possession up nine times and had a 58% pass rate and gave away a foul. Madsen lost possession once and had an 86% pass completion with no fouls. Ashby touched the ball more often but from memory Madsen covered more in defence.

That's why Ashby is more of a liability to me.

I certainly think the Leeds manager hadn't done his homework. They gave huge amount of space to Chair. I remember saying it looks like their manager has never watched us play. It looked more to me than just having a bad day.

I don't think people mean we actually win more games against better opposition. I think what they mean is that those teams generally don't play just to frustrate the opposition which we often find hard to play against. Burnley might be different though given their goals against total.

Thing is we're not under the radar this season. Last season we shocked Leicester and Leeds. Most teams we beat's fans forums said how could we lose to QPR. Now at least 50% of fans are saying, actually QPR are playing decent football.

Those teams at the top will be taking us seriously now.

Ashby injured or hooked?
at 11:30 22 Jan 2025

That's the issue with these Premiership clubs hoovering up so many players. Loans to the Championship are all very well but you have to hit the ground running. Take Alfie: he wouldn't have been good enough for a loan at Championship level last season if he'd been in a Prem puppy farm but he was good enough for cameos and he's learnt from that and is noticeably good enough now to influence games. It was worth it for us to invest in him cos he's ours.

If Ashby had been ours he'd have been getting cameos for years and ironed out errors earlier. Morgan is an exception. Don't know how he's so good straight away in such a difficult league. Bit of a prodigy.

Leicester defeat a disaster??
at 11:17 22 Jan 2025

I don't think anyone needs to apologise. It was a legitimate perspective that I happen to disagree with but would have thought that even if we hadn't won these two matches. I thought it was down to fear of overloading after a frantic Christmas period and I still do.
But I don't anyone was wrong to disagree with me.

I do think though that it would've been reasonable for Marti not to anticipate that:

a) Leicester would play their absolute first team
b) Ashby would maake such ridiculous cock ups
c) We'd be playing in five feet visibility with a white ball.

That aside I can see why he rested the four players that would arguably be hardest to replace if they were injured: Dunne, Morgan, Frey and Smyth.

I'm sure you're right. Then Cook/Fox picks up the player coming for the onward pass.

He was only just 18 when he arrived and still raw. He just feels like we've developed him. Unlike Morgan who arrived fully formed.

Ashby throwing the jersey to the floor
at 08:22 22 Jan 2025

I agree. The difference being he wasn't a liability.

Ashby really is and in serial matches. I thought when he came on Marti had thought he'd give him some minutes higher up the pitch where he can do less damage to make up for the Leicester catastrophe and rebuild confidence. The main issue with him is he doesn't learn from his mistakes, which is worrying for him. We've all been saying he needs to just focus on doing the basics better, avoid the grandstanding and thereby eliminate the mistakes. If we've all been saying it then sure as hell Marti has too.

But instead he comes on, tries the difficult/dangerous pass again and again, playing us into the same trouble as at Leicester. Luckily Hull has nowhere near the talent Leicester forwards have and didn't punish us. He also shot when he should have passed. Now if you're Illias Chair or Sam Field with a lot of credit in the bank you can get away with it for a game or two. An Academy boy on loan not so much.

I thought Madsen looked like he was making an effort, not actively doing anything wrong and making a decent block and closing people down, which is probably what Marti asked him to do.

I just genuinely can't see us risking Ashby. Unless we need to play him a certain number of minutes to avoid a humungous additional payment (gasp). Whatever I think we won't ask Jamie Reuben to do us any more favours.

He has but I've noticed we have a strategy to protect him with his lack of pace. One of the younger players is tasked to run behind and cover. It works well.

Hull

They also have a month off after Grand Slams from tournaments at the top level and have some tournaments where they lose early on, like Alcaraz five times in his 18 tournaments this year, where he only played two matches. They only play best of five sets in Grand Slams, otherwise it's best of three.

Many players have chronic injuries at a young age. Murray had a hip resurfacing, Raducanu had two wrist ops and an ankle injury at 21. Draper has had numerous injuries that have hampered his career. Laura Robson had to retire in her mid 20s. Nadal has a crumbling foot. I don't think tennis is the model for sustainable careers in sport.
